Dior Holiday 2018 Rouge Dior Mini 4-Piece Set Review & Swatches
Holiday 2018
Dior Holiday 2018 Rouge Dior Mini 4-Piece Set ($50.00 for 0.20 oz.) is a limited edition, sold out mini set that was exclusive to Sephora. The upside for yours truly is that the shades included are part of the permanent range so not all is lost, at least in terms of swatches and testing. The formula is better than it appears in the ratings because this formula comes with an overzealous wear-time claim of 16 hours when most shades last between four and six hours. I wish the lipsticks were squatter as they are narrower, and in the mini format, they are more fragile; I managed not to break any (I was careful), but I could see it happening quite easily.

Saint Germain (414)
Saint Germain (414) is a medium pink with warmer undertones and a cream finish with very faint pearl. It had opaque pigmentation with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that had moderate slip, which I did find pulled a bit of color into my lip lines. The lipstick was lightweight and comfortable to wear over the four and a half hours it lasted for, and it seemed lightly hydrating as well.

Formula Overview
$35.00/0.12 oz. - $291.67 Per Ounce
It is supposed to “highly pigmented” with “lasting comfort” and no “colour streaking” for 16 hours. The pigmentation was typically semi-opaque to opaque in one layer, while the consistencies were lightly creamy or velvety, easy to apply, and went on fairly evenly/smoothly. The biggest "downside" is that they come nowhere near 16 hours for anything--they do not wear that long at all; they last between four and six hours on average, which is solid wear but falls quite short of 16 hours. The satin shades are more hydrating, while the mattes are slightly hydrating to non-drying. The formula has a strong, floral scent in the tube, and I don’t really notice the scent once it’s on the lips.

Terrific Matte (745)
Terrific Matte (745) is a medium-dark, reddened plum with warm undertones and a satin finish. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the texture felt lightweight, velvety, and smooth with light creaminess and slip. The color applied evenly and sat fairly well on my lips. It stayed on well for five hours and was lightly moisturizing while worn.

Daisy Plum (976)
Daisy Plum (976) is a medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and warmer, gold sparkle and fine, ruby pearl. It had good color coverage, though it wasn’t opaque, paired with a creamy, moderately emollient texture that was easy to apply and comfortable to wear. The downside was it had more slip and “wetness” to it that there was a bit of product that gathered in my lip lines, though it wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. This shade lasted well on my lips for six hours and was hydrating over time.

999 Matte (999)
999 Matte (999) is a bright, medium red with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The color coverage was nearly opaque in one layer, which applied evenly and smoothly across my lips. The lipstick had a very lightweight, velvety consistency that glided easily over my lips and felt comfortable to wear. The color wore well for seven hours and was non-drying over time.

These are great shades, especially Daisy Plum – but claiming a 16 hour wear is just ridiculous. And I can see what you mean about how easily they could break, which would definitely be annoying.
Well, I suppose that if I’m nervous about those MAC mini’s breaking on me, these may be even skinnier. Yet, the shades themselves are truly lovely, though.
I honestly don’t get how Dior could make such a claim for a “regular” lipstick. It is hard for a liquid lip to meet a 16 hour wear time. I do love the shades and in general, I really love Dior lipsticks. I am glad this is sold out or I might have been tempted.
So if they claimed five hour wear time, these would get at least an A-? Interesting. It’s a really nice set of shades, though.
I already have a mini of 999 that I got several months ago with Sephora points and it is so tiny and fragile that I’ve always been a bit afraid to use it.
Saint Germaine is gorgeous, but I have dupes. Also, I’m not a fan of the Dior lipstick scent. So this makes it a pretty easy pass.
If they claimed five hours, and they wore for five hours, then it would be 10/10 for longevity on that particular shade.
I really love your system because it’s so thorough and transparent!
My only question is why are longevity and application rated on a 1-5 scale and product, pigmentation, and texture rated on a 1-10 scale? Not that it matters because the system works great—and I do tend to overthink things sometimes (lol)—but I’m just curious about why you do it that way.
Longevity is out of 10, not 5. Only application is out of 5 and as it is mostly about how easy it is to apply/work with overall/effort or instructions required, but the other four areas (overall, pigmentation, texture, and longevity) are usually what’s responsible for missteps in application and therefore are all more important and also more nuanced (like I need to be able to give 85%, 95% total points possible). I don’t know if weighting was the right word to use here; 5/45 is ~11% of the score, where was 10/45 is 22%.
Wow, your system is so well thought out…I’m impressed!! Thank you for all your hard work! 🙂
I’m wondering if this was an overzealous marketing stunt. Or maybe even a mistake? Like it should have been 6 hours instead of 16? Because what chemist in their right mind would make a claim of 16 hours? I personally wouldn’t want something adhering to my lips for 16 hours like cement! Crazy!
Dior seems to be one with the long-wear claims on lipstick, lol. The Rouge Dior Ultra Rouges, which is the “hydrating” version of their Rouge Diors… 12 hours (spoiler alert… no).
On their own site, they actually say: “The voluptuous Rouge Dior formula provides 16h* of comfort with no dry lips or colour streaking, in both the matte and satin finish alike.” And the disclaimer is: * Auto-scorage on 60 women. The interesting part is 16 hours of comfort with no dry lips or colour streaking – the latter just cinches that COLOR should be present. 16 hours would be a long time for a dry-down liquid matte!
Nice variety in this set
