Dior Fall 2012: Amazonia Vernis / Nail Lacquer

Dior Amazonia Nail Lacquer ($23.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is a dark olive green with murky brown undertones. There is the faintest medium olive shimmer that is barely detectable even under really bright light. Deborah Lippmann Billionaire is several shades darker, and it is cooler-toned, less olive-like. China Glaze Agro is shimmery and lighter. Cult Nails In a Trance is much lighter. MAC Fatigues is less olive, lighter, less brown. China Glaze Westside Warrior is lighter, less brown. NARS Mash is shimmery and greener. Chanel Khaki Brun is lighter and browner.

It’s new and limited edition for fall, and it’s certainly a fall-inspired color with its murky, but kind of inky, hue.  I’m never sure exactly why brands put shimmer into a formula that nearly always looks like a cream finish. You can’t even see the shimmer in the bottle, but there are a few bits on the brush (see the second photo) and in the final swatch–at least with this shade you can’t really see it in the bottle, so you don’t expect it in the first place!

Amazonia is opaque in two coats, though nearly opaque in one.  The formula wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it was balanced so it didn’t pool along the sides of the nail, streak, or bubble up.  Every time I use Dior’s larger, slightly tapered brush, I really like it.  You can almost cover the entire nail (depends on the nail!) with one brush stroke.  The brush on Amazonia was a little wonky, though, as it had some upturned edges–I haven’t had this happen on any of my other Dior polishes (including the other shade from this launch).

Hm, much more brown on the nails than the olive which shows in the bottle. And the “shimmer” is so imperceptible as to require Superman’s x-ray vision for it to appear. It’s not a super interesting (let alone, pretty) colour for the price. To be honest, it looks a bit like The Hairy German’s poo when he has been unwell…..   I think I’ll stick with my NARS’ Mash which has a thousand times more depth and complexity than this, in addition to actually being… you know… really lovely.

@xamyx  @Kafka   Ooops. Sorry, Amy. I’m probably too visual. But, in all honestly, that *is* what it looks like to me. The resemblance is even stronger in the swatches on my phone…..

@Miss J OT-Apparently, according to GZ, TM was “skipping” along, talking on his phone, when the altercation occurred. Really? A 17 year old male was “skipping”? Also, according to GZ, what happened that night “was God’s will”. Part 2 tonight.

Very good for my wallet, I simply hate the Dior fall collection, except the 5 Colours which remain classy. I purchased a lot from the spring and summer collections, I am really disappointed by the Fall theme.

Not to get all scatological but I would say this is waaay darker then any diapers I have changed and is a rich, mysterious, jungle-y color like the name would imply. I’ve never dealt with Dior’s brushes outside a salon so now I am really in a quandary.

I would love you to fully review some of the classic mac blushes, like well dressed etc. I know you have swatches but I think reviews would be so helpful!(:

I normally like greens, but this shade is off somehow. Too much brown in it, perhaps? It looks like a horrible case of nail fungus or…. something more disgusting. No thank you!

Just not a colour I find attractive – sludge, pond scum, poop, nail fungus…those terms (some already used by others) are what comes to mind.

Aside from the very hard to see shimmer, this looks exactly like Zoya Codie! From their Fall 2011 Smoke collection. I remember Scrangie described it as looking like old leather. From her pictures and my bottle, I would encourage readers to consider Codie if they like Amazonia, unless they love the mini-shimmer as Codie is a creme finish. At $8 the Zoya is a very good buy in comparison.

What do you think of Dior brushes? From your photos they seem almost as mangled as the new wetnwild spoiled line. (ok maybe not THAT bad, but they certainly don’t look like the hefty price is paying for a more carefully crafted applicator)

Hi! In the review, I think I mentioned that this is the only time I’ve had Dior’s brush get splayed out – all the others to my recollection were exactly as they should be. I actually like the wider, tapered brush – if you have narrow nail beds, it might be too wide.
