ColourPop Midnight Super Shock Shadow
ColourPop Midnight Super Shock Shadow

ColourPop Midnight Super Shock Shadow ($20.00 for 0.28 oz. or $5.00 for each 0.07 oz. shade) is a collection of four Super Shock Shadows that can be purchased a “set,” but you can also purchase each shade alone. There’s no monetary advantage to purchasing the set; the only difference is you would get the packaging that reflects the collaboration and collection’s name. It’s a nice selection of shades, and all four shades performed well for me and were consistent with the formula I’ve come to know and love. If you’re unfamiliar with the Super Shock Shadow formula, it is more like a cream-powder hybrid than traditional cream eyeshadow. If you touch it, the product feels more like a sponge or stiff mousse, as there is light give, but it doesn’t have the same emollient or thickness of traditional cream products. The texture is thinner and is manipulated on the skin more like a powder. The brand says that using fingertips yields the greatest pigmentation, and if you prefer, synthetic brushes, but I find synthetic brushes to work well for applying and still getting great pigmentation out of the majority of shades (typically the very glittery shades are ones where fingertips really do improve them).

Midnight is described as a “black undertone with a ton of gold glitter on top in a metallic finish.” It’s a blackened olive green with warm undertones and gold glitter. It had semi-opaque coverage that was buildable to opaque coverage with two to three layers of product. The texture was lightly emollient and blended out well without turning patchy. The eyeshadow was still going strong after ten hours of wear (no primer), but I did have a few stray glittery bits underneath my eye. Charlotte Tilbury Veruschka (DC, $34.00) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). MAC Gingerluxe #3 (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). MAC Greenluxe #4 (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Porter is described as a “warm burgundy with gold multi-dimensional gold glitter on top [of] a metallic finish.” It’s a slightly muted, medium-dark cranberry with hints of warm, pinky-copper tones and subtle gold sparkle. The texture had a really creamy, smooth feel to it, and it applied with true-to-pot color with full coverage. It blends out with ease and doesn’t look patchy or faded. On me, I didn’t have any fading or creasing even after ten hours of wear. ColourPop Lectra (LE, $6.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). MAC Heritage Rouge (PiP, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). MAC Hidden Motive (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). YSL Scandal #3 (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Telepathy is described as a “bright gold with a green undertone in an ultra-metallic finish.” It’s a bright, light-medium yellow gold with an almost “cool” undertone (compared to most golds, which are often orange-based) paired with a metallic sheen. The eyeshadow had great color payoff with a smooth, blendable consistency that applied beautifully and was still in pristine condition after ten hours of wear. KVD Beauty Prophet (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Citron (P, $8.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Blitz (DC, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Sydney Grace Be the Sunshine (PiP, $6.25) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty About Last Night No. 02 (LE, ) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Melt Cosmetics Ganja (PiP, ) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Sephora Sage (PiP, ) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (95% similar). ColourPop Come Clean (PiP, $6.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #5 (PiP, ) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Tryst (DC, $25.00) is darker (90% similar). ColourPop Photosynth Sis (P, $9.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). KVD Beauty Thrasher (DC, $21.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Goldmine (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Sephora Bronze (LE, ) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). ColourPop The Game (LE, $4.50) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek Fortune Teller (P, $9.99) is lighter, brighter, warmer (85% similar). Viseart Bijoux Royal #3 (LE, ) is lighter (85% similar). Dose of Colors Dirty Money (LE, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Coloured Raine Nightingale (LE, $6.99) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). Too Faced Instigator (LE, $16.00) is warmer (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. Weenie is described as a “pinky rose gold in a pearlized finish.” It’s a slightly muted, medium-dark coppery bronze with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was nicely pigmented with full coverage and a creamy, moderately emollient texture (it felt “wetter” than most ColourPop eyeshadows). It sheered out just a wee bit when applied, but it layered well if you needed pristine, opaque pigmentation. It wore well for ten hours. Coloured Raine Who Me (DC, $6.99) is more shimmery (95% similar). KKW Beauty West (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). NYX Rose Dust (P, $6.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Sephora Antique Copper (359) (P, $9.00) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Draft (PiP, $4.50) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Make Up For Ever D708 Pinky Copper (DC, $21.00) is warmer (90% similar). ColourPop La-La (P, $6.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Quite Yummy! (LE, $22.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Pink Haze (LE, $45.00) is cooler (90% similar). City Color Yas! (P, $6.99) is darker, brighter, cooler (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Paradiso (Eye Color) (LE, ) is darker, more muted (85% similar). Sydney Grace Boardwalk (P, $8.00) is darker (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. OMG, Colour Pop can’t seem to do any wrong! One awesome collection after another, but hey at least they aren’t Chanel prices, thank goodness. I’m tempted, but I have dupes in my stash already (incl MUFE Bronze and UD Goldmine) , but I LOVE your eye look and will try to recreate it from my stash.

I think it is really nice that ColourPop is starting to offer the shades from their collections individually. I can’t decide if I want to purchase this whole quad or just Telepathy, Midnight, and Weenie since I already have Lectra which is pretty close to Porter.

Christina Avatar

Christine, when you apply multiple Colourpop shades for one look, do you use all synthetic brushes? I just realized that most of my brushes are from Japanese lines, so they’re all made of natural hair I might have to go out and purchase a few different synthetic ones because I have a large collection of Colourpop shades but only shaders made of synthetic bristles that I used to use for concealer or patting colour onto my lids.

Laura Avatar

I have all Japanese brushes too, and was like “Oh these really don’t excite me” when I first got the shadows. Then I started applying with fingers (per “application tips”) and having so much fun. I have dug out some synthetic ELF brushes to blend and add definition, but I think you use more product. I really love these in case you haven’t noticed….

Mary Avatar

Those are really pretty; and so is your eye look! I’ve never tried anything from ColourPop(don’t really like ordering online and since I live in NYC, I’ve never had too), but I may have to give these a try!

Nancy T Avatar

Christine, this eye look you did using these jaw-dropping stunning, I tell you! Perfection!

Sooo, I have had Telepathy, Porter and Weenie ( yes, I knew it was her doggie, but still, that name!) in my CP cart all month, but wasn’t sure about them. Decided to wait on your review, and I will probably get Porter and Weenie, but Telepathy is duped decently by my UD Blitz. I was REALLY hoping it would be more green. So, for that effect I’m getting MAC Lucky Green! This will prove to be interesting, haha!

This is on my wishlist but I was hesitant to get the whole set because Porter and Weenie could be dupable. Now that I’ve seen that there aren’t so similar to other shadows in my collection, I’m excited to get the four shades!

I’ve been on the fence about Telepathy for a while, but I think I’ll have to pick it up. It would be a beautiful inner-corner highlight!

Marissa Avatar

i think it’s great that colourpop made the shades available to purchase separately. weenie and porter are screaming my name. telephathy is also cute. i think midnight would be the only color i wouldn’t use as much. it’s a very nice set!

Kat Avatar

I just ordered Telepthy, along with Aquarius lippie stick and a few other things. I really wanted both Weenie and Porter, but I already have a few near-dupes for both (MUG Bitten and CP Hustle for Porter, and CP La La and perhaps others for Weenie. No exact dupes but close enough that I can’t justify it).

Quinctia Avatar

Glad to see they’re splitting up these sets now. I actually think the two shades from Metamorphosis I love are worth essentially $10 a piece, because I really love them, but I ordered a couple of singles along side them, and it would’ve been nicer to spend $20 on four shades I’d like instead of on a set where I don’t use two.

Stacy Avatar

I’m so happy ColourPop broke up both of Kathleen’s sets so the shades can be purchased individually! Between three of these (I don’t believe I can make the red-burgundy shade work with my skin tone) and “Blaze” from her previous release (the only one out of that quad I really wanted), I will have the perfect KL Quad to play with 🙂

My birthday is Sunday. So darn it, I’m breaking my “Low Buy” rules and treating myself!

Gigi Avatar

Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE that eye look. It would be great if you could post a tutorial, it’s stunning! Definitely getting the quad now, iffy about telepathy’s wearability but you convinced me 🙂
