Mesmerising Maroon

Charlotte Tilbury Mesmerising Maroon Colour Magic Liner Duo ($30.00 for 0.03 oz.) includes a richer, deeper rusty copper metallic shade on one end and a matte, pinky-plum on the other end. The metallic shade performed the best with more pigmentation and smoother application, while the matte shade had more buildable coverage and a slightly firmer consistency, though both shades wore for over 11 hours well.

Mesmerising Maroon (Metallic)

Mesmerising Maroon (Metallic) is a deep copper with moderate, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The eyeliner yielded nearly opaque pigmentation in one pass. The texture was lightly emollient–more of a smooth glide than an inherent creaminess to it–that was comfortable to work with on my lower lash line. It stayed on nicely for 11 hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview

-

The formula is supposed to "stay-all day" (specifically listed as "up to 16 hours") that "glide" on and is "smudge-proof, waterproof & humidity proof." The majority of the shades had semi-opaque to opaque, buildable coverage that was easy enough to achieve, and if one applied in shorter, overlapping strokes, they looked full coverage applied.

The texture of the mattes felt a bit firmer, and while I didn't have issues with the tip snapping off when I used it as an actual eyeliner (on my lower lash line), I did have two of four shades snap when I went to swatch them on my arm. The matte shades tended to last a little longer with solid 10 to 12 hour wear that had 50% or greater color visible at the 16-hour mark. There was minimal migration/movement around my outer corner after 12 to 14 hours.

The metallic shades had slightly more glide, so they were more smudgeable, but they didn't feel overly slippery and stayed in place well. I felt like they had a similar wear time of 10 to 12 hours of good wear with 50% or greater color still apparent after 16 hours of wear. There was less movement/migration to the outer corners over time with the metallics after 16 hours of wear compared to the matte shades.

Mesmerising Maroon (Matte)

Mesmerising Maroon (Matte) is a deep, reddened plum with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff in one stroke, which applied evenly without tugging on my lower lash line but did feel a bit “sharper” as it was a firmer formula. The color built up well to full coverage with a second or applied in shorter, more overlapping strokes. It wore well for 12 hours before starting to fade noticeably and migrate into the outer corners.

Thanks for the review, Christine. I just ordered this one from Beautylish. I must have it ? I ordered the green duo as well so I’m hoping it has acceptable performance too. I couldn’t pass it up as I do not have anything like it in stash.. greens are usually not my thing, but I think it will pair well with the Natasha Denona mini Gold palette I picked up awhile back.

I do like the metallic side of this eye pencil much better than the matte side because I prefer the lighter shade. It looks much easier to use too. A dupe of this shade is the very gorgeous Prissy, the highlight of the recent Melt Cosmetics collection.

It is a beautiful colour but I still can’t see me ever in a liner this red. Heck, getting rid of the red is why I use a flesh toned liner. I remember the first time I saw someone wearing red eyeliner – far redder than this one – it was the cashier at my local grocery store. She had an edgy look anyway – multiple piercings, funky hair-cut, etc. – and this look really flattered her (her standard look was with both this red liner and then a very thick, heavy winged black liner). I remember noticing it at the time (this is at least 10 years ago) and thinking how good it looked on her. But it’s not a look for me – the edgiest things about me are the purple in my hair and my Blundstone boots!
