Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad
Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad ($58.00 for 0.24 oz.) is described as a palette of “rich mauve, pearly pink beige, shimmering lilac, and deep eggplant.” It’s a new for spring but will be joining the permanent range.
The first shade (top, left) is a medium-dark brown with hints of plum/mauve and a frosted finish. It had nice color payoff, and it applied smoothly and evenly. Chanel Variation has a darker brown. MAC Smut is a richer version of this shade. Urban Decay Stray Dog is similar, perhaps a bit warmer.
The second shade (top, right) is a pale, peachy beige with a frosted sheen and subtle warm undertones. The pigmentation was lovely, and it applied nicely. MAC A Natural Flirt is warmer, more shimmer. MAC Double Feature #5 is similar but less frosted. Urban Decay Sellout is similar–a little darker. Illamasqua Slink is a touch warmer.
The third shade (bottom, left) is a medium-dark cognac brown–a little orange-red to it but very, very subtle and slight, so it doesn’t take on an overly warm coloring. It had fantastic color payoff, and it was really soft, finely-milled, and smooth when applied. Too Faced Hot Cocoa is lighter. Illamasqua Focus is a cream product, and it is redder. Tom Ford Platinum is similar but a cream product. Urban Decay Wreckage is less red-toned.
The fourth shade (bottom, right) is a deep, dark reddened brown with a satiny sheen–just a step or two above matte. This shade packed quite the punch of pigment; really don’t need much to define the crease at alL! It blended out easily, which is absolutely necessary with anything that’s very pigmented and/or dark in color. Make Up For Ever #162 is matte, slightly richer/more intense. theBalm Presto is a bit darker. MAC Embark is matte and browner. Chanel Ebloui is more shimmery, a touch lighter, and a cream. It compares favorably with Tom Ford Enchanted.
I can see some looking at this quad and going, “Borrrrring!” and others reaching for it all the time. That’s the problem with basics and essentials–they tend to be kind of boring, but they work well and are still shades that most core collections have. I think it is wearable on both cooler and warmer complexions, and the colors offer a good range of light/dark for contrast. The depth and richness of the darkest shade makes this quad as wearable for work as it does for evening, because it’s so rich, it can really add definition, darkness, and general smokiness for an evening look.
The quality of the quad is lovely, with all four shades having great color payoff, soft, smooth textures, and tip-top wear of eight hours (without a primer) and no signs of fading or creasing. There was only a very, very slight excess of powder in a couple of shades but so slight–it’s really being nit-picky. All in all, while dupable, a very wearable, easy-to-use quad that will be a nice travel pick as well as a go-to for anyone who is need of more work-friendly shades.

I find I have I have a lot of allergic problems with Chanel eyeshadow, especially the plums. Unfortunate because they are so pretty.
That’s really interesting that you said this about the allergies. I just had a terrible eye allergic reaction today, and I used my Chanel prelude quad for the first time in months.
Merry Christmas ( a bit belated sorry ) Christine !
This quad reminds me of Tom Ford Enchanted but I don’t own Tom Ford quad. The Chanel quad is pretty, I still don’t know if I’ll purchase it though, it’s not LE so I’ll wait I think !
I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to see a review before. I actually said yay, when I clicked on the page. I just bought this online with a Christmas gift card. I can’t wait for it. This will probably be my only luxury eye purchase for a while.
Happy Holidays, Christine. Don’t forget to savour your first holiday season as a married woman 🙂
I like that they changed the formula of their quads. They used to be very stiff and lacking in pigmentation. Still debating on whether I should pick this up or not.
On a side note, I love these mini tutorials!
It looks really lovely! The European version better be GOOD.
Seriously considering this as an alternative to Tom Ford Enchanted. I like the colors in Enchanted a touch more but this is a more reasonable price for a quad (still high, but somehow anything over $60 just seems like too much for 4 colors, for me — mental block?).
I love that we’re seeing more pinks and burgundies lately. I wore the hell out of burgundy eyeshadow way back in the 90s!
Merry Christmas!
I believe I need this -_-
I am a sucker for browns. I already have so many… But really… What is too much anyway?
Love it! Gotta get it even I get some extra cash!
This looks beautiful, although I just don’t think it’s worth $58 to me since I have a decent sized collection. However, my 21year old niece who is barely getting into makeup, I could see this being great for her! I’m skipping it, but I can see others snatching it up!
Haha, I just can’t wait. Since Chanel.com has free shipping before 25th, I’ve already got one of this lovely product. I have learned that it’s quite similar to but little bit lighter than KASKA BEIGE which is my first chanel product :D.
Now, I have ECLOSION, SPICES, KASKA BEIGE, and PRELUDE while my Raffinement is on the way. Except for PRELUDE, the other 4 they are so similar to each other but I cannot leave any of them.
I also got the GARNET eyeliner, the new illuminating powder, and the blush ROSE INITIALE at the same time. They should work so well together!
I’m really tempted by this; I don’t have anything quite like it and it’s the sort of thing I would use all the time.
Another version kind of those pink/brown shades…like Tom Ford Enchanted and Estee Lauder…I am not good at color description…I find it interesting that some find eye primers necessary…when you wore it for 8 hours without primer. I dont use primers….I feel I want my skin to breathe.
the top right is really pretty, but I guess I’m one of those “boring!” people. True though that it’s a great basic palette.
Christine, Thanks for showing the steps. I’ve gotten much better at using 4 colors with your help. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!
Happy holidays, Susan! 🙂
I was under the impression that the shadows in this quad were a lot more plum-toned. Still, it’s beautiful and I might just have to grab this up along with my blush and highlighter purchase from the same collection. I don’t own a Chanel quad yet, so it’s the perfect excuse to splurge!! 😛
The look you created is absolutely beautiful. There’s something very classic and old-fashioned (but in a good way) feeling about these colors. I have plenty like them, so this isn’t an essential for me, but I do think they’re lovely.
Merry Christmas! I have to tell you that I love this tutorial feature you’ve added to the reviews; very helpful to a makeup novice like me, thanks so much. Please keep it going.
Thanks, Elle!
I LOVE this! It could easily be my everyday go-to palette. The problem I have with most neutral palettes is that they have too warm, yellowy brown colors or they are simply too pale and similar to each other. I can see these colors working great for my skin tone!
I love how you are doing little mini looks/tutorials with your reviews, sucha great idea!
Gorgeous, this might be my first eyeshadoe quad. It´s so pretty, I don´t care about the price since I´m going to use it alot. This collection of Chanel has been great as expected. 😀
This palette is lovely. If one was in the market for neutrals would you suggest this or shopping individual burberry eyeshadows? I’ve heard a lot of raves about their neutrals but I’m not liking their palettes.
You haven’t liked Burberry’s new palettes? Hmm, I haven’t noticed a big difference between their single eyeshadows and their palettes.
Not a quality thing, I just don’t like the color combinations and think I’d rather pick out the colors myself.
Loved your site Loved this tutorial. Could you also post more makeup for the, ahem, more mature face? and I don’t mean 40 years old. 🙂
I like neutral and my eyes are brown, but I’m not sure why they describe a lilac. I don’t see a hint of lilac in any of these. I’m not even sure which one they’re referring to. Am I missing something? Just doesn’t say spring to me.
Can anyone please tell me if this quad contains parabens?
