Chanel Noirs Obscurs Collection: Rouge Allures in Hysteria, Maniac, Obscure

Chanel Noirs Obscur Collection
Chanel Rouge Allure: Hysteria, Maniac, Obscure

Chanel Noirs Obscurs Collection features three shades of Rouge Allure Lipsticks: Maniac (deep black red), Hysteria (eggplant black), and Obscure (brown black).

Rouge Allure Lipstick ($30.00)

  • Hysteria is a deep, dark cool-toned blackened, red-toned purple.  It goes on very opaque and layers well.  Applied with a lip brush and/or over a dark lip liner, this color is very intense and completely solid.  It has subtle violet-purple shimmer and a glossy finish.
  • Maniac is a dark brown-based red–almost reminds me of a deep, dark blood red in a way.  Like Hysteria, it applies better with a lip brush rather than straight outta the tube (which is often the course you’d take with such a dark and bold lip color like this anyway).  This one has very subtle reddish shimmer that’s almost missed by the eye.  It has the same glossy finish as Hysteria.
  • Obscure is a dark, terracotta-warmed brown.  It also has a glossy finish with just a slight bit of coppery orange shimmer.  This one applied the best straight from the tube, but it, too, applies better when you use a lip brush.

I’m a big fan of Chanel lip products.  Their eye products are often misses for me, but their lip products rarely disappoint.  I’m so pleased to see truly opaque, richly pigmented colors release from this high-end brand.  These aren’t imitations of bold, fall lip colors at all–they’re intense and well-pigmented.  My advice is to line with a lip liner and potentially fill in all of your lips with it (you can try a flesh-toned, lip-toned, or similar-toned shade) and then apply using a lip brush for precision.  Bold lips look best when they’re well-defined, so a lip brush for application is really necessary!

Rouge Allure lipsticks are creamy, silky, and are nearly always pigmented.  They wear incredibly well throughout the day (several hours and still hang on a bit after eating/drinking) and fade in such a way that doesn’t leave any funny rings or the like around your mouth.  They’re hydrating and just feel good on the lips.

What do you think?  Are these colors drawing you in?

  • Product: 28/30
  • Value: 8/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

Recommendation:  For luxe, long-lasting and intense bold lips, Chanel’s new, limited edition Rouge Allure shades are a top choice.

Availability: October/November 2009 at Chanel.

Chanel are by far number one when it comes to their lipsticks. Gorgeous, sophisticated colors and strong pigment. Will be buying MANIAC and HYSTERIA for sure. Very sexy!

Wow, I just received Hipster from the Mac Trend F/W ’09 collection and I’m pretty sure that Maniac looks just like it. Christine, what’s the difference between the two shades?

I love them all but I purchased Hysteria 1 month ago. It’s a very different color for a lippie! 😀 Agreed: Chanel lip products are always fab. However, the Noir Obscur e/s quad sucks!

I am loving Maniac and can’t wait to see it at the counter to play with it! I know if I ask at my closest counter, the SA will just look at me as if I’m speaking a different language (it happens to me alot, as Greece seems to be the last to get anything!)

Maniac is gorgeous! However I can’t spend 30.00 dollars on a seasonal/trend color, that I’d probably use a few times then forget about it. However that is what Mac is for, you know?

I ordered Maniac in the Nail Laquer from Neiman Marcus It won’t ship out until October 23rd or so, but I don’t care, because it is truly beautiful and I cannot wait to wear it this Fall/Winter!!!

I’m going to getting Maniac in the Rouge Allure are soon as Chanel.com emails me and lets me know when it’s available on-line!!!

Thanks so much for the awesome pictures, because now I don’t have to wonder what the lipstick looks like, I already know it will look wonderful on my fair skin with dark features…

You Rock!!!

Hi Christine,

I just heard back from Chanel.com today and they told me that the Maniac Lip color was listed by error on their site…It isn’t available yet, even though it’s on there! Bummer! I am still going to order it as soon as it becomes available though….I have collected almost all of the new Rouge Allure Laquer’s (except Ming, too Pinkie for me).

Wowie! I used to do the dark lips way way back in high school. Obscure reminds me of Paramount or Photo from MAC.

Will you be doing a review of the quad for this collection? I got it and I don’t likey. It doesn’t apply nicely when dry. I used Fix+ to mess around with it a bit today. I tried it over the black MAC Greasepaint Stick, MAC Blackground Paint Pot, Black CCB, Painterly Paint Pot and on its own. Over the MAC Greasepaint sticks and Black CCB, the colors are ok, but nothing like the MES from MAC nor the NYX Lake Moss Trio. I find the blackness kind of greyish. I’ll post pics on my blog this week for everyone to see. I haven’t used it in a look yet, but I’ll try something out tomorrow. I’m torn since I really liked the Murano quad I got at the same time. I’m thinking it might work better applied wet as an eyeliner instead.

I’ve already bought one of them last week. Hysteria is there, waiting for my courage. Actually, it is still too beautiful to be seen as just bought (read: perfect) for having the brave of using it 😀
In Italy the entire collection is already in shops.
By the way, in your opinion, which colours is wearing the model of the collection? I suppose Maniac (that is already in my wishlist! I am going to buy it as soon as I have time to go again in a shop) with the dark grey colour of the eyeshadow palette.

Lovely, but way too dark for my skintone and also I tend to wear strong eye make up, so wouldn’t use them. But I do like the first too (don’t do brown though).
