Chanel Message (214) Rouge Coco Stylo
Chane Message (214) Rouge Coco Stylo ($37.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark, reddish plum with warm undertones and a creamy, lightly glossy finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff with a very smooth, creamy, and slippery consistency that felt like butter melting on the lips when applied. The formula is comfortable to wear and hydrating over time, but it only wore for three and a half hours on me. ColourPop Ghosted (DC, $10.00) is more muted, less glossy (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Helena (LE, $36.00) is less shimmery, more muted (90% similar). Tarte Escape (P, $21.00) is more muted, cooler (90% similar). Chanel Script (218) Rouge Coco Stylo ($37.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a slightly muted, medium-dark brown with hints of mauve and fine pink micro-shimmer. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a very creamy consistency that had a lot of slip and melted against the lips as it applied. The color seemed to emphasize lip lines a bit, as the color gathered there, but it didn’t worsen over time, so it wasn’t too noticeable from a normal viewing distance. This shade lasted for three and a half hours on me, but it was moisturizing. Urban Decay Broken (DC, $18.00) is more shimmery, darker, less pigmented (95% similar). Guerlain #17 (P, $36.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Glamour Era (P, $25.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Monica (LE, $36.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Thistle (LE, $7.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Guerlain Python Bag (012) (P, $32.00) is less pigmented (90% similar). Too Faced Sweet Maple (DC, $22.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Toasty (LE, $7.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Estee Lauder Tender Trap (P, $32.00) is brighter (90% similar). MAC Smoked Almond (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Bite Beauty Marzipan (DC, $28.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Magic Spell (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, more muted, cooler (85% similar). MAC Sunset Pearl (LE, $25.00) is lighter (90% similar). Estee Lauder Discreet (P, $32.00) is lighter (85% similar). MAC Smoked Almond (DC, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Trance (DC, $18.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Guerlain Air Kiss (304) (P, $37.00) is more shimmery, cooler (85% similar). Chanel Sepia (207) (LE, $37.00) is darker (85% similar). Bite Beauty Moka (DC, $28.00) is darker, brighter, warmer (80% similar). NARS Bahama (P, $27.00) is cooler, less glossy (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Formula Overview
Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo ($37.00 for 0.07 oz.) is supposed to offer the “intensity of a lipstick” with the “shine of a lipgloss” and “comfort of a lip balm.” The consistency of this formula is incredibly soft and melts against the lips, so it is easy to over-apply (and subsequently, easy to run through the product!) with a butteriness that you typically find in more emollient lip balms. In general, color coverage is semi-opaque to opaque, with wear coming in at three to five hours, depending on the shade. The formula is comfortable to wear and very hydrating both during and after wear. The downside is that these types of twist-up lipsticks (in the slim casing) tend to contain noticeably less than a standard bullet lipstick (0.10 to 0.12 oz. usually!) and the more pliant formula makes it easy to reapply and run it back and forth more than necessary (for the coverage). There’s a light rose scent to the formula, subtler than the Rouge Allure lipsticks, though.

Message is so completely gorgeous! This formula is a pleasant surprise indeed.
It’s very comfortable to wear!
Very pretty! I’d like to try Message, but medium, warm plummy colors are tricky on me — I have and like both Manic and Pink Chocolate, but Message looks much plummier to me — Manic is more red on me, Pink Chocolate more brown — but I have some other warm plummy colors that I thought might make good MLBBs on me, but that just fall flat… it would probably work out better if they were cooler, I think. Not sure, maybe Blue Mercury Philadelphia or Nordstrom at King of Prussia will get it and I can try it on.
Message definitely readers less red to me, when compared to Manic!
Script is a color that is right up my alley. Glad to see it got a decent rating.
It is nice!
I bought myself ‘Script’ for Valentine’s Day and I’m a little on the fence about this launch. On the one hand, the formula is absolutely magnificent. It is truly one of my favorite lip formulas to I’ve discovered in the last five years. The packaging is sleek, chic, and travel-friendly.
With all that said, the color selection has been a complete let-down for me personally. I really wish they could have included at least one MLBB mauve; Script is close, but it’s still much too dark for my light-medium skin without sheering it out and blotting. I hope they expand the color selection in the near future as I’d truly love to have 3-4 of them, but I don’t wear anything that isn’t natural looking.
Aside from that, I think they’ve truly launched a stupendous product. It isn’t exactly a ‘bang-for-your-buck’ type product given the price and amount of product, but I really do believe the excellent quality makes up for it. It’s one of those products you don’t really mind to splurge on since it is such a unique, high-quality lippie.
I’m glad you’ve enjoyed them thus far and, as always, thank you for the informative and excellent post!
Here’s hoping that they’ll expand the color range and you’ll find more shades to love, Andrew 🙂
The colors are so pretty, but having a hard time with the $37 price for .07 oz, esp. if the formula is so emollient, I will run thru the tube. I have the dupe Guerlain Air Kiss, and it’s same price for .12 oz (+70% more). Even a Guerlain Rouge G is much cheaper by the oz. I think Chanel needs to re-think the pricing on this one
I understand – they will definitely be easier to use up than your average formula!
No temptation here, thanks to my having TF Pink Chocolate and Guerlain Air Kiss lipsticks!!! Both of which are perfection, no gathering in lip lines like Script did, either. Of note is the fact that I likely never would have noticed or bought either had I not learned of how great both are right here on this blog! Of which I am eternally grateful for.?
Phew 🙂 And both of those are nicely hydrating, too!
Message reads more rosy-dk mauve on me. I really like the shine and find it moisturizing. Apply sparingly!
I could see it getting a little rosier!
Message is quite pretty! I like Script too but I’m not sure it’s a color I can pull off. The sheerness makes me wonder what it would look like with my red violet natural color. Either a nice neutral nude or a muddy mess!
Script is really nice!
Really lovely lipsticks that can be used for daytime wear and I think they would suit most complexions. They look great on you Christine.
Thank you, Genevieve!
Message is a “redidh splum”, eh? I have a little trouble visualising that colour, thanks for the reference pic. 😉
(That is to say: oops, typo alert. It’s a cute typo though)
Fixed! So sorry!
Amazing. Message pulls red on me.
