Chanel Candeur et Experience (268) Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
Candeur et Experience (268)
Chanel Candeur et Experience (268) Eyeshadow Palette ($61.00 for 0.07 oz.) contains three shades of brown with a pop of warm red with mostly matte finishes. The texture of the four shades is firmer and thinner compared to most of the recent Eyeshadow Quads (it reminds me more of the previous formula in the quads), and I found it applied and worked better in practice than it seemed like it would from initial swatches. The colors were more buildable and were quite blendable on the lid, in spite of the firmer press in the pan. All of the shades lasted eight hours before starting to fade and lightly crease.

Candeur et Experience #2
Candeur et Experience #2 is a light, golden brown with strong, yellow undertones and a satin finish. This shade had the firmest press in the quad, which made it harder to get good pigmentation out of it without really jabbing at the color or building up in layers. The color blended out without issue and lasted for eight hours.

Candeur et Experience #3
Candeur et Experience #3 is a medium-dark, reddish copper with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had fairly good pigmentation, though it took two layers for full opacity. The texture was soft, smooth, and lightly silky–the softest of the four–that applied evenly and blended out nicely. I noticed fading after eight hours of wear.

Candeur et Experience #4
Candeur et Experience #4 is a medium-dark brown with warm, golden undertones and a satin finish. It was slightly darker than the first brown shades in the palette, and the undertone is warmer (yellower, less red). The texture was smooth, blendable, and easy to work with on the lid, but it had semi-opaque color coverage that required two to three layers for true-to-pan color. It wore well for just over eight hours on me.

I totally love this quad and I think it ranks right up there as one of my favourites ever on you, Christine. I have so many similar shades and I rarely reach for anything other than a handful of my favourite palettes these days, so it makes no stash sense or financial sense to indulge. I did order some of the lipsticks (gulp).
I’m sure you have similar shades in your stash at least, Wendy 😉 I think the reddish shade is the only one that isn’t quite as common, but the rest are browns so surely you have some of those!
Oh Score: I have the Sephora/Pantone Marsala palette with the matte red..looks super close. Win!
I love the look of this palette and it looks great on you. However, your photo cements that it would not look good on me. Rusts, reds and oranges make me look ill. Saves me some money since it appeared on The Bay website today.
Aw, darn! Well, hopefully next collection is more suitable for your coloring, Stephanie! 🙂
The more I look at it, the more I want to try it. Going to go home tonight and dig through my palettes for a similar red and see. Common sense not prevailing over emotion with this one.
Hey, if you can dupe it, well worth trying! 😀
That third shade, oh yes! 🙂
Yay!
Oh great, the 95% dupes for the Red #3 shade are both LE 🙁 I think Chanel should issue that as a single -it’s such a wearable looking red shadow. It’s a beautiful eye look, and very daring of Chanel to put a red shadow in there, but I think the color combo is too close to ABH Modern Renaissance. I think I can dupe this look using my existing stash or blending a red/brown together. And I need to save my pennies for that Stylo in Eros. Christine, what is that metallic eyeliner you are using? It goes so well with the quad
It’s tough to find it in such a matte finish, I think! It’s the two Chanel Illusion d’Ombres in the collection – Rouge Brulee and Rouge Contraste!
If you are not planning to wear it close to the lashline, check you blush stash for dupes.
Great idea! Thank you!
That quad looks beautiful on you! The colors kind of remind me of the ones that come in the Anastasia Modern Renaissance pallette.
Thanks, Christie! It’s kind of like a smokier, warmer take on the Modern Renaissance palette.
Oh, the look! May I Copy, please? Kind of disappointed in this one, but I love an expensive skip. I have Melrose and auburn, and the browns are always easy to stash shop. No great loss to me, and wallet spared. The lips will probably be my downfall….love ’em all.
I would be humbled if you tried it, KJH!
Beautiful!!! Love the way you placed these colors on your eyes. They really pop! I’m going to have to get my hands on this quad eventually….
Thank you, Cherie!
I love this quad, but it is very warm for my cool toned skin. I don’t think I could pull it off.
Yes, it is definitely a warm-toned palette!
Just not good for me. That red isn’t something I’d use (I know – I sound like a broken record) and the browns, while deliciously autumnal looking, are shades I already have in abundance here and there in my collection. I can’t wait to see the lippies though – years and years and YEARS ago, I had a lipstick from Estee Lauder called Datenut Red that I have tried ever since to find a dupe for. I’ve kept a little nubbin of it in it’s original tube for comparison purposes and I have the feeling that one of the reds in this collection might just be a match.
….but, y’know, looking at how absolutely flattering this quad is on you, Christine, I can say that if I had colouring like yours, I’d be flying out the door to grab this because the overall effect you’ve achieved is both gorgeous and unique.
It’s a very smoldering look! I was surprised that it wasn’t quite as overwhelming on the eyes when all was said and done – especially when I wore it with the red lipsticks in the launch.
The quad’s interesting, because I think it is gorgeous, it is also one that seems more limiting – warm, more matte, and then reddish shade. It’s cool to see Chanel release it, since they do have some good, everyday quads already in their range, so I like that they used a seasonal launch to go for something different.
You raise an excellent point, Christine. This is a part of a statement-making, seasonal collection is supposed to depart in some way from the products in the regular lineup. As soon as I new this was Lucia Pica’s “baby”, I knew it would be outside the box but still true to Chanel.
I’m in my early seventies, but even I can easily wear CetE. I don’t wear it in such a strong color-blocked fashion as you (wish I could because you look beautiful) because at my advanced age, creating gradients of color is far more flattering. It is; however, a testament to the quad’s versatility that we can both create looks that are edgy, smoldering, and sophisticated even though we are separated by decades.
Ooops! Please excuse the typos.
I agree that this look is very flattering on you. It is the most classy reddish look I’ve ever seen on you. I was thinking to grab the Anastasia palette since it is ranked well and it has similar shades, but I think I’ll take this one. It seemed boring but.. The look you created is truly too beautiful!!!!
This palette looks really pretty on you, have to consider this one, have never tried any of Chanel’s makeup products but your rating is really propelling to give them a try soon.
Thank you, Fashn!
This is a real love hate set for me. I would have to have it used on my eyes to know if it would be love.
Hopefully you can try it sometime!
Looks so nice on you Christine- wow-I’m really conflicted for myself tho. I rarely if ever wear browns or any variation of them so I’m thinking just one for the collection and I’ll go instead for the Illusion’s for my everyday wear. Sure wish they’d put #3 in either a duo or single!
If you don’t wear browns, I am not sure this is a good way to go 🙁
I was right, this collection looks stunning on you. OMG I just want it to hurry up and cool off so I can wear some legging and boots and this makeup!
Thank you, Mindy!
I am so in for this. Next week I’m getting it no matter what!
Yay!
This palette really caught my eye when I saw the sneak peak for it! The colours are quite lovely considering they’re pretty much all matte! That cranberry colour is just to die for though!
Hope you can check it out, Stephanie!
Yay! I got this last week and am very excited to start using it, especially for fall. I think it’s the textures and finish – I have all of the same colors but in foils or pearls or shimmers. I was on the fence about the Illusion D’Ombre pots and the blush and still am – I think I can live without them but I am so glad I got this quad. Great eye look, Christine!
Can’t wait for you to use it, Pearl!
I love the look you created. It looks really pretty and what I like it isn’t a look that is common. Classy but different at the same time.
Thanks a lot, Maria!
It’s a stunner, for sure. I don’t think I could pull off such a bold look. I need to try a few bold shades before going to the counter.
Good idea to try it first! 🙂
I think it’s a beautiful quad, and it looks amazing on you. I think I’m covered on these types of colors. I’m very happy that red eyeshadow appears to be “in” for fall.
Thanks so much, Rachel! 🙂
The swatches don’t look too good, but the eye look you created is really beautiful and intense. I can’t wear red-based shades for the life of me, so it’s a pass, but I can see it be very popular. I still think replacing one of the medium browns with a light beige would have made this palette more wearable on light skin tones though.
I could see a light beige being useful!
Even though you DEFINITELY got a magnificent eye look here, I won’t be buying this one. This is no Empriente du Desert quad for me, unfortunately. But I will be doing what I can with my ABH Mid. Renaissance palette, with a little help from some of my MAC singles to try for the stunning smokey red and brown eye you did here! ?
I think you can definitely recreate it with what you have 😀
I love this quad, have not stopped using it or the illusion d’ombres since I got them….a lot of bloggers have been saying that this is the first all matte eyeshadow quad from chanel. In reality there was a quad from chanel in the 90’s called le mat naturel. It was all matte and exactly what it sounds like. It ranged from light peach to dark brown. It was my go to and I was so sad when it was discontinued. But NOW there is this quad, my new obsession! Thank you chanel!!! I love the look you did with it christine, it made me order the lipstick in rouge vie lol!
So glad you’re loving yours, Laurie!
Very pretty quad – again not my colours, but it would really suit lots of others. It looks beautiful on you.
Thanks, Genevieve!
I really thought I’d buy this, but I think I’ll pass on it. I used to really dislike the Chanel quads as they were firm and thin, used to make me mad!
I was interested in this mostly for the reddish brown, I think I’ll get MAC Swiss Chocolate instead as it was quite a close dupe.
I love the look you did with this quad, the colours look so good on you.
Thank you, Helene!
Absolutely stunning on you! Love, love, love the lip! This look is so sophisticated, and is perfect for you!
Thanks so much, Anne!
Love these colors together. I have dupes or close-enoughs for all of them. I’m going to save your look and practice it.
Hope you can try the look sometime 🙂
Ah I should have known the red colour wouldn’t have much close dupes in colour and finish. A great sophisticated look on you Christine! The browns in it make the red so wearable and it’s a well put together quad for a look but the browns are also too dupeable to warrant the splurge for the red for me (un)fortunately. Same case with the Marsala palette where I loved all the red tones in it but didn’t really need the rest.
Thanks a lot, Yumi! 🙂
The Anastasia renaissance palette seems to have shades similar to this quad…lemming both, but might cave to the Anastasia since it has more shades…
Kind of! I want to say the Anastasia has cooler pinks/reds and lighter, warmer browns 🙂
Just considering the quality, would you recommend this one or the modern renaissance?
They’re both nice – it really matters which one you’d wear more! Chanel’s quad is limiting, I think, as it is only four shades and very mid-tone/dark.
I swatched these in-store — really nice: smooth, balanced, good pigmentation. I’m going to have to think about it though, as I have a full wardrobe of neutral shadows already, and reds in the ABH Mod. Renaissance palette.
You’ve put together a stunning look with this quad!
Thank you, AB!
I didn’t want to like this palette, but it is gorgeous on you Christine! Chanel really does reds well. This has reminded me to pull out my Rouge Noir Illusion D’Ombre and Crayon Khol!
Thanks so much, Nancy 🙂
Christine, that eye look looks so good on you – it really makes your eyes pop!
Thank you, Pteetsa!
I have been loving this palette and supplementing it a bit with Tom Ford Honeymoon but for the life of me, I cannot keep these shadows from creasing on me. I have tried almost all primers (Nars, UD (several), Too Faced, Lorac, TheBalm) and even paired them with Mac Paint Pot in Soft Ochre and set them with UD All Nighter and for the life of me, cannot get them not to crease. Is anyone else having the same issue with these? They’re so beautiful, I just don’t want to be disappointed 🙁
On my arm, Candeur et Experience #3 was deeper from MAC Saffron, maybe was affected by warm weather. I mixed it with MAC Swiss Chocolate to reproduce exactly the CHANEL color. Hope that helps those who did not manage to obtain the palette.
Thank you!
Hello Christine! How do you think the red in this quad compares to colourpop’s Paradox? I got the latter and while I see a difference in vibrancy, I was wondering how it compares in term of finish and undertone (since the quad shade looks quite cool in the pan but looks warm on your arm).
I think they’re very different!
