When I've done it, I try to get a thin line across, and then if there are any wings/thicker areas, I'll work on those. If you're going for winged eyeliner, one of the keys is really playing and practicing with the right shape...

my answer: I love that they can be a really great way to get a lot of shades without paying the same price as you would for them individually. I don't like when it feels like they skimp on the quality!
