White Russian on the Rocks

Buxom White Russian on the Rocks Eyeshadow Bar Palette ($40.00 for 0.30 oz.) includes six eyeshadows ranging from pale gold to deep plum. I wasn’t a fan of this palette; it took twice as long to apply due to how long I spent packing and patting colors on to get enough product to stay in place. Many of the eyesahdows were sheerer, dusty/powdery, and prone to fading compared to what I’ve experienced with this formula in the past.

Born Glam

Born Glam is a bright, white gold with a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable consistency that was more loosely pressed in the pan, so there was a bit of excess product that kicked up in the pan when I used it, but it applied evenly and was not prone to sheering out on bare skin. This shade lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

$12.00/0.05 oz. - $240.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "primer-infused technology" that gives it longer wear with "intense payoff" and a "powder-to-silk feel." The more shimmery shades were most consistent: semi-opaque to opaque coverage with soft, blendable textures that ranged from more loosely pressed to slightly creamier (newer shades seemed smoother and creamier) with eight to nine-hour wear.

The mattes were a little more powdery, so they were sometimes prone to sheering out but were often buildable, blendable, and easy enough to work with and also lasted around eight hours.

Gilt Trip

Gilt Trip is a pale peach with warm undertones and a soft shimmer. It had sheer coverage, which was mostly due to the texture, as it was incredibly dusty and prone to sheering out. It just did not want to adhere to my skin at all, and even over primer, it struggled to build. On me, it seemed to last four to five hours–it was hard to tell definitively as it was so sheer to begin with.

5" Stiletto

5″ Stiletto is a light-medium pink-peach with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation, but it suffered from a more powdery consistency. This resulted in sheerer coverage as soon as I tried to blend it on the lid. The only way I was able to get more opaque coverage out of it was to use it over a primer and pack it on. The color started to fade significantly after six and a half hours of wear.

White Russian with a Twist

White Russian with a Twist is a soft, peachy coral with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was looser and a little dry in the pan, which resulted in sheerer coverage when I tried applying it to the lid. It was also hard to apply the eyeshadow evenly, as it adhered more strongly in some places and not others on me. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that lasted for six and a half hours on me.

Precious Metal

Precious Metal is a medium-dark bronzy brown with warm undertones and flecks of bronze glitter over a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied somewhat evenly to bare skin and blended out decently. The texture was chunkier and loosely pressed in the pan, which made it a messy shade to work with. The color started to fade on me after seven hours of wear.

High Society

High Society is a muted, dark plum with warm, brown undertones and flecks of plum and gold micro-shimmer over a matte finish. The pigmentation was good, while the eyeshadow felt soft, smooth, and blendable without being powdery or dusty. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

I ordered this as soon as I saw it (which was months ago) because I love the colors and I generally had a positive experience with Buxom’s shadows. I admit I was a bit disappointed by this, but I’ll make it work. The looks you created have inspired me!

Diane Avatar

As soon as I saw this palette, I got excited – all these colors would suit me! The ratings and swatches really turned me off, though, and I’m not going to waste $40 on a product that weighs in as mediocre. Thanks for doing these reviews, Christine! You’ve saved me (and probably many others) a lot of money!

Neonails Avatar

How disappointing! This wasn’t a palette that appealed to me, but I’m a big fan of Buxom’s eyeshadows–I love love LOVE the six shimmery fall shades that were released last year. Maybe I’m imagining things, but it seems like when Buxom does these limited release/premade palettes they don’t have the same quality as the individual shadows?

I’m just going to keep hoping they’ll drop more individual shadows like Silver Screen and Twilight Tryst soon!

ChynnaBlue Avatar

What a disappointment! I love the colors in the palette and the eye look you created with it is beautiful. I’m sorry it took so long. That sounds frustrating and I don’t want to deal with frustration in the mornings.

TheSnowcat Avatar

I bought this the other day and used it for the first time yesterday. I agree with the suboptimal workability of shadow #2, it is far too sheer and most of the glimmer flecks fall to the cheek. The rest of the group I really enjoy, chiefly for the final overall color look I was able to achieve. It complements light blue-gray eyes nicely. I did have to augment this palette with a cream-colored eyeshadow for the browbone area. The white gold (shadow #1) is far too metallic and shimmering for my browbone imo, but great for highlighting the inner corner. All together pleased with the purchase. I also got the White Russian liquid lipstick and it’s a beautiful, cohesive look, all told.

Not sure if you are already aware, but this palette is refillable with any Buxom shadow singles. The tray that holds the shadows pulls out horizontally to change out the individual pans. Nice feature, as I might switch out Shadow #2 for a more useful color, perhaps cream or black.

Miska Avatar

Whew, I am so happy that I waited for you’re review on this palatte. For the price, I would’ve expected better quality eye shadow. Such a shame! Thank you for your reviews Christine, you’ve saved me from quite a few purchases that I would’ve ended up regretting. This one is a pass for me.

Isa Avatar

I’m surprised! I’ve heard good things about Buxom’s eyeshadow formula, not in this particular palette, but in general. An F for a shimmer shade is awful! I’m under the impression that shimmers are actually easier to make than mattes and glitters. It’s a lovely look you created, even with these subpar shadows.

Kelly Avatar

Buxom must have quality control issues. I purchased a customizable palette a few months ago and ran into many of the same problems you had here: the shadows were sheer, dusty, and it was hard to lay down any color even with layering. I bought shades that had been highly rated by you (I don’t think any got lower than a B+), and even the gorgeous Twilight Tryst went on muddy for me and was semi-sheer at best. Your reviews are always so accurate and thorough, so they must have widely varying quality by batch. Shame!

Linda Avatar

I agree with every shade review here. Buxom makes my favorite eye shadow formula but this was way off. I did end up keeping mine because I’m in love with the packaging and it brings me joy on the vanity.

I have been forcing myself to play around with it and find these shades actually layer pretty decently and mix with other shadows, so I’ve found creative ways to make them work, except for Gilt Trip, gonna swap that with a single from the permanent range!

Amberielle Avatar

I saw this and bought it then returned it. I was disappointed but I realized that The Anastasia Modern Renaissance palette has all these same colors in it and they perform beautifully unlike the Buxom
