BUXOM Patent Leather Eyeshadow
BUXOM Style Icon Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “metallic taupe.” It’s a muted, medium-dark gold-shimmered brown with warm undertones and a frosted. It had good pigmentation with a slightly drier, firmer texture that performed better than anticipated in practice, as it adhered well to the skin and lasted for eight hours on me. LORAC Navy #4 (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. Tarte No Champagne, No Gain (LE, ) is more shimmery. Stila Thought (P, ) is darker, warmer. Viseart Gitte (P, ) is more shimmery, lighter. Dior Ambre Nuit #2 (LE, ) is warmer. Tarte Dare to Be Gold (LE, ) is warmer. Urban Decay Dirtysweet (P, $18.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Too Faced After Hours (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. theBalm Tubular (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. Ardency Inn Vintage Gold (P, $21.00) is darker. LORAC Smokey Topaz (LE, ) is more pigmented, darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM Patent Leather Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “sparkling blackberry.” It’s a muted, smoky purple with a frosted sheen. It had a drier, powdery consistency that made it harder to apply, as it didn’t stick well to the skin and always looked a little faded and semi-sheer. It only wore for six hours on me before fading. Ardency Inn Disco (P, $21.00) is darker. Too Faced Candied Violet (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. Charlotte Tilbury The Uptown Girl #2 (P, ) is more shimmery, lighter. Rouge Bunny Rouge Delicate Hummingbird (P, $19.00) is darker. Cle de Peau Champagne Supernova #2 (P, ) is lighter. Charlotte Tilbury The Uptown Girl #4 (P, ) is darker. MAC Pearled Earth (P, $16.00) is darker. NARS Phoebe (P, $29.00) is darker, warmer. Too Faced Bluff (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. MAC Tendersmoke (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. BUXOM Big Spender Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte sable.” It’s a muted, medium-dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture felt dry, but it worked–it wasn’t powdery and blended exceptionally well against bare skin with good, opaque color coverage. The color started to fade after eight hours of wear. Inglot #342 (P, $6.00) is warmer. Benefit Quick, Look Busy (P, $20.00) is darker. MAC Ground Brown (P, $16.00) is darker, warmer. MAC Cross-Cultural (LE, $16.00) is darker. BUXOM LBD Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte black.” It’s a medium-dark black with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff that was fairly buildable to opaque coverage if desired, but it takes some layering. The texture is dusty and on the thinner side, though there wasn’t a lot of excess powder kicked up when working with it. The eyeshadow could have had better blendability. On me, the color faded after seven hours of wear. Too Faced Coal (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Carbon (P, $16.00) is darker. Sugarpill Bulletproof (P, $12.00) is darker. NARS Pandora (P, ) is warmer. LORAC Black (P, ) is darker. Tarte Don’t Stand Black (LE, ) is darker. Laura Mercier Noir (P, $23.00) is darker. Anastasia LBD (LE, $12.00) is warmer. Divergent Dauntless Ink (LE, ) is darker. Giorgio Armani #01 (P, $32.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever M100 Black (P, $21.00) is darker. Kat Von D Shax (P, ) is cooler. Urban Decay Perversion (LE, $18.00) is cooler. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Enigma #1 (P, ) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM Satin Seduction Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “bisque luster.” It’s a brightened, light beige with warm, peachy undertones and a metallic sheen. It had fairly good pigmentation with a soft, blendable consistency that was slightly dusty. The color adhered well to bare skin and lasted for eight hours before fading slightly. Make Up For Ever I514 Pink Ivory (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. bareMinerals Mixologist (P, ) is more shimmery. MAC Phresh Out #1 (LE, ) is more shimmery. MAC Apricot Blend #1 (LE, ) is less shimmery. Chanel Poesie #2 (LE, ) is darker. MAC Just Gleaming (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery. theBalm High Tide (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. LORAC Snow (P, ) is more pigmented, darker, cooler. BUXOM Gimme Gorgeous Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte camel.” It’s a light-medium, yellowed brown with a matte finish and warm undertones. The texture was thin, but it blended and applied well to bare skin without turning patchy or going on unevenly. It had fairly opaque coverage, and the color didn’t start to fade until after eight hours of wear. Bobbi Brown Frappe (LE, $22.00) is darker, warmer. Laura Mercier Café au Lait (P, $23.00) is darker. Formula Summary: BUXOM Eyeshadow ($12.00 each or $40 for six) is a new formula that is available as a customizable palette system, where you can purchase a single shade and an individual compact for $13 or purchase a six-pan palette, plus six eyeshadows to go inside of it, for $40. Each eyeshadow is held inside a metal pan that is (presumably) glued into a plastic pan that snaps into the compact/palette. The eyeshadows are easily lifted in and out of the palette, so you can rearrange them or create a new combination if you have more than one set of six. They will fit into a Z-palette, but you’ll need to add a magnet to keep it in place. The eyeshadow formula is one that works better in action than swatched, as several of the mattes seemed on the thinner, more powdery side, but then they would blend exceptionally well while adhering to bare skin–and they wouldn’t fade any faster than the more shimmery eyeshadows. The more shimmery shades tended to outperform the matte shades with better color payoff. These eyeshadows seem to have a slightly firmer press to them (more in the style of your average MAC eyeshadow), and they feel quite different compared to bareMinerals’ Ready line, as those have a thicker, denser consistency.

So disappointing about Patent Leather – that’s one that really caught my eye. I’ll make do with the dupes I have. Style Icon is really nice.
I was surprised it performed so poorly!
Dang, all the shadows that interested me from this line either got bad grades or I already have dupes (or both). Guess I’ll be passing.
Awww!
The beautiful eye look rocks in your photos. I caved and picked up 2 custom palettes from this line. I find the shadows to be a mixed bag as evidenced by your reviews, but overall, I’m happy with my choices. Style Icon is so very pretty on and Gimme Gorgeous is a perfect nude transition colour. I use it also to create more of a crease when I’m wearing cream eyeshadows that are quite shimmery. I layer it on top in crease and slightly above. It gives my hooded eyes a little more dimension without overly complicating the look.
They did a good job with the neutrals, I think – when I laid them out, you could really see a warm/neutral/cool (ish) set of shades.
The scores are mixed on these, but since it’s a custom palette, at least you can skip the duds and only buy the good shades or the more unique shades.
True!
I had put together a palette, as well as purchased the pre-made “nude” one, but I returned everything to Sephora. They were OK, def performed better than they swatched, but after trying them I was bored and decided they weren’t particularly unique or good enough quality to justify the purchase.
Sorry to hear that!
I definitely wish Bare Minerals sold their Ready line as singles.
That would be awesome!
I had a little giggle reading your review for LBD – “MAC Carbon (P, $16.00) is darker”… That’s when you know it’s bad news…
Well, it doesn’t really take into account the quality issues of Carbon, just the color 🙂
Lovely look. You kill me with the Sephora liners every time. It’s the only section of the big S that has me salivating on every visit. Haven’t got flirting game. It was LE, right? Thanks as always for your prompt, honest, thorough reviews. On this visit, I decided to order the pastel palette; hope it doesn’t disappoint. & 2Besame Reds. I’ve gotten a brown, a champagne, & a licorice gloss, basically a being afraid of starting in on the Reds. ‘Cuz I know I’m in trouble. Besame direct online has been a good experience. The Buxoms look great in store, but they haven’t been out long enough to get ‘locusted.’ How do you think the general formula compares to BE Ready? I got Comfort zone, due to your positive review of the formula. Being older, I’m trying to tone down some, but still have some color. Glad I wear glasses. That way, there is a distancing effect. The young ‘uns usually compliment my bolder looks. Age may tame my eye looks, but I’ll give up my bold lipstick, when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers….or when they migrate up my nose!
Flirting Game is permanent! Welcome to My Loft is the other taupe-y shade and that was LE!
BE Ready has a much denser, thicker texture – it’s soft but thicker. Ready is closer to a formula like Urban Decay, whereas Buxom is closer to MAC!
Patent Leather looks so pretty – too bad it got a D+ !
It looks pretty in the pan!
Out of all of the eyeshadows I liked Patent Leather the best, just looking on it as it looks in the pan. Pity that the grade was so low. Not that we have Buxom here, but still. I guess I’ll go through the dupelist to see what I can get my hands on.
You did a very pretty look, using these.
Thank you, Helene!
Hey Christine! That’s a great “natural/day” look you created! 😀
I was looking at these yesterday on Sephora’s iPhone app, & I couldn’t find the ounces/grams per anywhere. I’m just curious if you knew the amount of shadow in each before you got them or not. It drives me bonkers when a company doesn’t list the amount of product. I went through that with LimeCrime’s Venus palette (I wanted it badly so I bought it anyway), I scoured the Internet for an answer as to how many oz.’s were in each shadow, & the same answer appeared everywhere—”Full-Sized”! “Eight Full-Sized shadows”! Ok, so what IS the amount in a “full-sized” shadow?? .05oz.’s? .06oz.’s? More? Less? Lol it’s so vague! Anyway, when I got my hands on it, I was able to figure out how much shadow was in each pan by dividing the net wt. of 0.564oz./16g by 8 (genius, I know!), getting a total of .07oz.’s per shadow (it’s really .0705, but that’s too much to remember lol), & I was FINALLY satisfied! Ssl, I got carried away!
Just curious cuz I was looking at these last night.. Thank you for rawking so hard!
Hi Cory,
It’s stated above after each eyeshadow’s name – 0.05 oz. each!
Oh it must be an issue with Sephora’s app then. I just checked it again & it’s not listed near the shadow or in the description/ingredient sections. I did find it in the Q&A section though… asked & answered by the customers/”clientele”..
Thnx! 🙂
Hey Cory,
I meant in my post 🙂 I format with ($Price for ## oz.) whenever I have the information, which is about 90% of the time (occasionally a press sample with lab labeling I won’t have info on) – so it is written in my review above next to each shade: BUXOM [ShadeName] Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.).
That’s because you rock! 😉
I always check your reviews & swatches before purchasing anything makeup-related. I have your page bookmarked, so if I’m in-store, I look to see what your review is. If I’m buying on-line (that’s the majority of my purchases), I switch between the site I’m buying from (MAC, MUFE, or MUG for example), & your site’s swatches/reviews!
Come to think of it…you pretty much ARE my MUA rock! 😀
Thank you! 🙂
Uh oh, there goes one of these that was on my list…I had really loved Patent Leather. Disappointed. I know I shouldn’t be because I already own some gorgeous purplish shades, but a purple with taupe in it? Hard to find! Perhaps MAC Fathoms Deep?
Fathoms Deep would be a nice alternative, though perhaps not an actual dupe.
That, or the Ardency Inn one in Disco. I just love those rich, smoky purples!
Glad to see most of these are good. I really like the color of Patent Leather. Maybe with primer?
Primer would help!
Your eye looks great but the consistency amongst shadows really puts me off. I have way too many as it is, so if I’m going to purchase more, I really need that consistency..
There are some duds! I find it to be fairly consistent in the high B kind of range. Good but not great.
I was hoping that LBD would be really the blackest of blacks, too bad that it isn’t.
Aww!
The only one of these six I’ve picked up is Style Iocn, and I like it. I’ve been pretty pleased with the quality of the shadows I did get and I’m thinking of putting together a second palette.
I like them — it’s not OMG LOVE! but I like them as well!
