The one that comes to mind is Guerlain’s Turandot eyeshadow palette, because I used that for my wedding makeup.

My Mom’s best friend gave me my first brush set! She was an aunt to me. She passed away from cancer the same year I survived it! I still have the brushes!

I have some perfumes that are. COACH Poppy Blossom is what I let my cousin borrow for her wedding. This shimmery white covergirl eyeshadow bc I used it all through middle school and any mauve lip color. It’s what my Mom wears and what her Mom and my Dad’s mom wore/wear.

Dior’s Mystic Jade quint, because the dark brown/green shimmer was the first real duochrome type shade I’d seen and I totally fell in love with it. The quint itself isn’t all that great but I still have it… for sentimental reasons.

Estee Lauder’s Crystal Rose lipstick was the first real nude lipstick that worked for me and I still have an untouched tube somewhere even though I’ve been wearing it on and off for years, I adore it that much.

Crabtree & Evelyn La Source products, which was probably the first non floral/fruity fragrance that I fell in love with. It was so fresh and different from anything else I’d smelt way back when.

Chanel Rose Drop Hydrabase lipstick – my first one disappeared and I actually cried when I realized it was gone (I NEVER cry over makeup) but luckily I managed to hunt down a replacement even though it was already discontinued.

Oh my god, I’m a sentimental SAP… 😉

The original Chance by Chanel perfume because my mother wore it so often. Now that she’s passed away, the scent reminds me of her. The MAC Studio Fix Plus Powder Foundation has that same sentimental value. It was also the first thing to really get me into both MAC and higher end makeup.

Mine is the Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Palette. I was so new to makeup at the time; I had heard so much about the primer potion that I wanted that palette because it also came with a sample. I had met a guy a few weeks before and we were hanging out at the mall. I mentioned how I wanted the palette and he bought it for me. He’s still my boyfriend 3 years later. And just 2 days ago he surprised me by buying me the Naked 3 palette. 🙂

I’m not super sentimental, but all my Inglot products have been bought on holiday (I don’t live near a store) so they’re all connected to different memories of visiting the city where my grandparents live.

There’s a nail polish that I’ve been looking for since I was probably 12 or 13. I bought it at this little trinkets store, and it wasn’t a famous brand, which is why I’ve forgotten the name of the polish. When I finished it up, I went to get another bottle and never found one to this day. It was a beautiful, opaque deep pink with some glitter in it – a very small amount – and it was just beautiful. Thinking of it now brings a lot of memories to the time that I used it, and I wish I could find it again.

I really did not get into eyeshadow until I was in my 30’s and wanted a more pulled together professional appearance. Up to that point, I wore very little makeup. So I have this weird fondness for a number of eyeshadows in my collection.

MAC patina – was a eureka like eyeshadow for me. It looked like nothing much in the pan, but would transform on my skin like magic.
MAC bark – one of my first MAC shadows and one that taught me the value of a muted shade for sculpting.
NARS Mekong astonished me texture and pigment wise and the colour was so can’t go wrong.

I would say MAC Desire and Prrr lipgloss. That was my 1st makeup purchase in 2001. I never wore makeup until then (I was 22). After that I went MAC cray cray and ended up getting a job with MAC a few months later. Never looked back.

Cacharel Lou Lou; it’s my “signature” scent, and I’ve been wearing it for 25+ years. However, because ot’s not the easiest perfume to get ahold of, I tend to “ration” it. Since I wear it primarily for special occasions, there are memories attached. Between those memories, and the fact I’ve worn it so long, it definitely holds sentimental value.

Most recently, I picked up a Revlon blush in Sandalwood Beige. It’s been DC’d to make room for Revlon’s new (yet apparently subpar) line of blushes, so it was on clearance. It was my first contour product back in the early-90s, and while I don’t need any more brown contour products, I couldn’t resist. This was the product that made me fall in love with contouring!

Pale blue sparkly eyeshadow from PUPA in a ladybird-shaped case. I got it from my little sister like 15 years ago and don’t ever wear it anymore (it looked kinda horrid even back then, but who cared :)). It must have been a splurge for my sis and I actually loved it when I got it, so I just hang on to it through clean-ups in my kit. It also reminds me of the good ol’ days when we were in our early teens and that always makes me sentimental :).

MAC 224, 266 and 190 brushes, paint in Bare Canvas and eyeshadows in Charcoal Brown, Arena and Girlie because these were the first MAC products I got. I remember the rush of happiness when I left the counter with my MAC plastic bag (back then) carrying these goodies. Having been a makeup fan since I was a kid, it was a dream come true to finally buy some MAC stuff 🙂

MAC Russian Red. I had a friend who used to wear it constantly and I always loved it on him. He was also the one who first taught me about makeup when I was a teenager. It was the first lipstick I bought. After he died, I wore it often and still repurchase it. I own a lot of red lipsticks so it’s truly a purely emotional item for me now.

Yes! When I was about 13/14 my grandmother gave me this beautiful Chanel gift set that came with two nail lacquers and a lip gloss/lipstick pallet. The colors were a muted yellow and grey and I believe they were called ‘sun’ and ‘rain’ or something like that. I kept the polishes, the pallet, and even the packaging.

I love how a lot of these are wedding related! My mom never wore makeup, but she kept the makeup she used for her wedding day and every now and then as a kid I would peruse through it because I loved the way it smelled. Now every time I smell makeup that has a similar smell I get all nostalgic 🙂

A Mary Quant midnight blue chubby eyeliner pencil. Wish they still made them, my cousin was always trying to steal mine. And an Elizabeth Arden eyeshadow duo in midnight blue matte and frosted taupe, another Holy Grail item. Bought both over 25 years ago, lost the Quant (probably that cousin!) but still have the Arden.

Moisture Mist (Shiseido’s line of makeup and skincare for NZs) Eyebrow Pencil…I think. Bought this almost 24 years ago for my wedding makeup. It’s now just a stub…can hardly sharpen it. I remember using it as an eyeliner at some stage, just on the outer corners and eyebrows at other times. That’s why I’m confused if it’s an eyeliner or eyebrow pencil. The texture isn’t too hard or too soft, can easily pass as both. Didn’t think of it as a sentimental item but kept it just because…I’m a hoarder?

Not quite a makeup product but related. It is a small Dior compact mirror I got from my mom a long time ago. It is square, gold and the back is wavy. Such a gorgeous mirror. It goes with me everywhere and must have had it for 10-12 years? I wish I could remember if it was part of a collection or anything but I do remember some of the other things she got then and it was a small pink makeup bag. Very cute still have that as well.

A couple actually.
Bonne Bell Watermelon lipgloss. I just wore it a lot around the time when I had my first boyfriend ever and also my first kiss haha.
Clinique lipsticks… I still have one my mom gave me like ages ago. She doesn’t wear lipstick any more but Clinique lipsticks always remind me of her.
I don’t know if I’d call it sentimental, but I still remember the makeup I was wearing when a guy totally broke my heart last too. I haven’t worn that green eyeshadow since, even though it’s awesome!

On my honeymoon, I purchase a YSL gold heart shaped compact with face powder inside. It is studded on the outside in chunks of different sizes of blue crystals in different blue shades. It is a collector’s piece. I still have it in perfect condition. My husband and I will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary this April with a trip to Maui. Time flies, friends, do not waste it for it is what life is made of.

That I still own: I may need to wait another few months on that to see if the shine wears off.
That I no longer own: My first Dior eyeshadow quint.

I got a bunch of my sister’s makeup, skincare, and hair products when she passed away. Most of it’s too old for me to use now, but there were some brushes I still use and I doubt I’ll ever get rid of any of it.

I have a few sentimental products.

My mother’s Revlon Living Lipstick in a really bright fuchsia – so not my colour, but it was the first shade I ever used. It was housed in a gold tube that was really heavy.

My first eye palette was the Maybelline Garden Variety 8-pan. I still have it. I’ve duped it with NYX’s Spring Fling palette as I’m leery of using shadows that old!

Coco by Chanel – it’s the first scent I ever remember my mother wearing. I kept her bottle even though she said it was off (it didn’t smell bad to me) and then she surprised me with a bottle for my 21st birthday. I still have that bottle.

So, ever since it came out (I think summer of 2005 or 2006), I had never found a more perfect combo of shadows for myself than Chanel’s Lumiere Facettes Gold Rush Quad (Limited Edition of course). I lost it at some point, and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it ever since. Can you suggest dupes or a place I may be able to find the real deal? It would make my year!

Yes.
1. Clinique Moon Violet long lasting matte lipstick
2. Lancôme effacernes waterproof concealer
3. Lancôme Tres Violette Eyeshadow
4. Clinique Blotting pressed powder
5. Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Perfume

These were the only staples I used daily during the late teens of my life when my first love was alive. I could never forget them or think anything but fond warm thoughts upon coming across these. They are quite close to my heart. He wore the Classique for male. 🙂 Best years of my life. <3
