Anastasia Master Palette by Mario Eyeshadow Palette ($45.00 for 0.30 oz.) contains twelve eyeshadows housed in a fairly slim, cardboard palette with a mirror on the interior of the lid. The formula in the palette seemed softer, more velvety than past iterations I’ve tried from Anastasia (even newer released singles), so the palette has more powder kickup and can be messier if you use rougher or denser brushes with it, but the shades are rather pigmented so you don’t need to use a lot of pressure to get enough product for application either. That softness didn’t result in the eyeshadow sheering out too easily, rather that the eyeshadows blended well together and seamlessly. In some ways, I felt like it could be a little muddied, as some of the tones and depths of shades were nearer to each other, but it will all be in the pairing, I think. The eyeshadows lasted for seven to eight and a half hours on me, which was good wear, and obviously, a primer should help extend wear further.

It is a warmer, more earthy set of neutrals; the colors are more in the mid-tone range with a few deeper shades but no really light shades. If you want an all-in-one palette, you may find this is missing a brow bone and/or transition shade (depending on your skin tone). I wish there was more of a difference between Hollywood and 5th Ave shades and between NYC and Muse, though. I think they could have been lighter/darker respectively and given added versatility to the color combinations here or even substituting one of the gold shades for a taupe or purple-leaning plum.

Each eyeshadow is 0.025 oz., which is the same as last year’s Self-Made palette, but the price point is $10.00 more for this year’s palette (Self-Made was $35.00). I understand that this is a collaboration between Anastasia and makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, but it’s certainly a steep increase, even accepting that there is some additional price built-in to pay the collaborator. It is “worth it” with respect to the overall quality and amount of product you get, but I’m not keen on that drastic difference in price. As another example, Modern Renaissance palette is only $42 and includes two more eyeshadows, so I hope that this price point isn’t a preview of more price hikes to come!

NYC is a muted, smoldering reddish-brown with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had excellent pigmentation with a smooth, velvety texture that wasn’t too soft or too firm in the pan. Kim is a medium brown with warm, orange undertones and lighter, golden shimmer. The pigmentation was great, while the texture had a very silky, finely-milled feel to it that was a touch dusty and prone to kicking up an excessive amount of product in the pan. On the upside, the eyeshadow was easy to blend and apply to the skin, and while dustiness often translates into sheer or patchy color, this shade applied with good, even coverage. Muse is a muted, medium-dark reddish brown with a hint of warmer, copper in its undertone paired with a metallic sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, velvety, and slightly denser texture that applied beautifully to bare skin. A little went a long way with this shade, so use less than you think you need, but it was easy to work with and lasted for eight and a half hours on me. Violeta is a dark, reddish brown with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which was buildable to opaque coverage after two to three layers. The texture was soft, lightly dusty, and fairly easy to blend, but it was the “hardest” to use within the palette as it did take a bit of work to soften the edges as it seemed to melt a bit more on bare skin. 5th Ave is a light-medium, yellow gold with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had great pigmentation with a very smooth, velvety texture that was soft enough that it was also dusty to the touch and kicked up the product in the pan easily. That softness did translate into good blendability, and it seemed to soften on the lid and looked a little “lived in” where the shimmer has a more luminous, glowing look to it.
