I’m back with new hair color!  The inspiration was a mashup between “galaxy” hair (purple, pink, teal, blue, like this one) and “sunset” hair (pink purple, orange, like I originally had here) with more contrast and less blending compared to my past iterations (as inspired by this reference photo). Teal has always been a favorite color for me, and while I love the way “galaxy” hair color looks, I’m still not sold on it for me because it uses a lot of cooler-toned shades.  I thought this would be a nice way to incorporate some blue/teal without the full commitment.  I really loved how it turned out!

I had my hair done by Lauren Krech (at The Waverly Salon), as usual, and I split the appointment across two days like I did last time.  The first appointment was raising up my balayage and removing the previous color, and the second appointment was all color!  It went faster than the last two visits; it took about seven hours in total (across the two days) with just under four hours on color.  Lauren used five different colors on me:  Joico Hot Pink with Red and Clear, Joico Pink, Joico Orchid, Joico Mermaid Blue with Cobalt Blue, and Pulpriot Neon Orange and Joico Fiery Coral.

P.S. — I paid for my services in full!

Hi Christine, maybe you could share your hair routine at one point? My hair is purple, and right now, I’m really struggling with my routine. For a while, my hair didn’t seem to care, but nowadays, I can clearly see that it’s getting bleached regularly. I haven’t found the perfect products for my hair (when I had them, they got discontinued, argh), so, here’s where my question comes from. Also, your hair looks fab!!!

It probably helps that I don’t use much heat on it, so that’s a common source of damage that I don’t experience. I wash once every five days, and I’ve been using Olaplex 3 prior to washing (probably every other wash) and then Olaplex shampoo & conditioner. I usually use a leave-in conditioner and let my hair air dry for the most part; I was using a Shea Moisture coconut one but have been using Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair. That’s about all I do!

Sam R. recently did a Q&A with her hair stylist (she’s blonde), and you might find some of their insight useful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsBsvxK1VgM

I absolutely love it! I wish I had the courage to do something like this, but I have long afro hair and I am so afraid of it breaking off and not growing back. You have that silky hair, mashallah. And now I’m going gray, help! I want a crazy bright color I can do at home that will cling to the gray, too.

Thanks a lot, Katie! I can totally understand that. Have you considered researching for a local colorist/stylist that might be able to consult with you and help give you realistic expectations/solutions? I’m not at all a hair expert, so I’m not much help, but I think starting professionally and finding ways to keep the vibrancy over time with at-home products might be a good way to go to ensure happy, healthy hair!
