Avalanche

Fenty Beauty Avalanche All-Over Metallic Powder Set ($99.00 for 0.25 oz.) includes seven shades in small, plastic jars with a twist-off lid and a small, plastic insert that sits on top of the opening to prevent product loss. They are small jars, which made them more fiddly for me personally as someone with larger hands/longer fingertips, but they didn’t seem overly prone to tipping over. These are best for someone who enjoys working with loose eyeshadow and will use these primarily as eyeshadow rather than as a cheek product as they’re easiest and more consistent in performance on the eyes.

The formula is supposed to have a “melt-worthy texture” that is “smooth” and uses “mega-fine pigments” that yield “high-impact” and “rich, blendable color.” They can be used as “eyeshadow, cheekbone highlight, blush, [dabbed] over lipstick.” The texture seemed finely-milled as one would expect of a loose powder, but I had a few shades that were clumpy in the jars, which I recommend de-clumping by using the end of a brush handle (the part without the brush itself) to swirl gently to break up the clumps. The shades were fairly blendable with some being more or less blendable, and in general, shades that seemed blendable as eyeshadow did not always blend out as easily on my cheeks (as a blush or highlighter).

The pigmentation varied from shade to shade with some being more medium in coverage, but buildable, while others were more opaque applied dry. Most of them intensified and were more opaque when applied with a dampened brush. The formula is called “metallic powder” but they were more of a pearl to frost finish; they’re not intensely metallic, which may or may not be a deal-breaker. They definitely can be dabbed onto the lips and blended by gently brushing a fingertip back and forth to add a subtle, pearlescent effect.

Foxy

Foxy is a medium-dark copper with warm, rusty orange undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-oapque pigmentation applied with a dry brush and intensified to full color coverage with a stronger sheen when applied with a dampened brush. It had a finely-milled, smooth consistency that wasn’t too powdery or dusty–I didn’t get a poof! of powder when working with it–so it didn’t have issues with fallout when I used it as an eyeshadow nor when I used it as a blush. It stayed on nicely for eight hours on me as an eye and cheek product.

Raspberry Rave

Raspberry Rave is a medium-dark plum with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had good pigmentation both wet and dry with the dampened application yielding slightly deeper and more metallic color. The consistency was soft, smooth, and blendable with slight clumps in the jar upon opening that were easy to break up. It applied easily as a cheek and as an eyeshadow. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours as a cheek color and eight hours as an eyeshadow color.

Ice Cream

Ice Cream is a bright, medium yellow gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had medium pigmentation in a single layer when I used it dry, and it was opaque when I used it with a dampened brush. The initial texture had huge clumps of product when I first opened the pot, but after I broke up the clumps, it seemed to stay loose and felt very finely-milled. This shade blended out nicely on both eyes and cheeks, though it pulled much more yellow on my cheeks than I expected–somehow less of the gold/orange tone came through. It lasted for eight hours on my cheeks and eyes before starting to fade.

Cleopatra

Cleopatra is a soft, pale green with warm, golden shimmer and a frosted finish. It had sheer coverage applied with a dry brush, so it worked best for highlighting areas like the inner tearduct or cheeks. Applied with a dampened brush, it was opaque and smoother on my lid. The consistency was soft and finely-milled once I broke up the clumps that were there upon first opening of the pigment. It stayed on well for eight hours as a eye and cheek color.

Brain Freeze

Brain Freeze is a medium-dark, charcoal gray with subtle, cool undertones and a pearl finish. It had medium, buildable pigmentatio applied with a dry brush, but it really needed to be applied over a tacky base or with a dampened brush to get full coverage and more true-to-pot color coverage. The texture was fairly soft and finely-milled, and while it didn’t give me trouble blending out on my eye area, it was somewhat patchy when I tried to apply it as a cheek color. It wore well for eight hours as an eye and cheek color.

Glacier Gang

Glacier Gang is a bright, medium blue with subtle, cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation applied dry, but it was much deeper and more true-to-pan pot in color when used with a dampened brush. This shade was rather pigmented, though, as a little went a long way, and it seemed to have an even more finely-milled texture compared to the other shades. The color did leave a stain behind, even when used over eyeshadow primer. I found it blendable as an eyeshadow but wasn’t able to get as much of a seamless gradient using it as a cheek color. It lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before fading a bit for both eyes and cheeks.

February

February is a light-medium purple with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation applied dry, so it was easily taken to full coverage by building up or by using a dampened brush instead. The texture felt smooth and finely-milled, which made for a more blendable formula on eyes, but it wasn’t quite as blendable on my cheeks. There was slight fallout when I worked with it on my eyelids. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably as both an eye and cheek color.

I really feel like fenty prioritized quality over quality for this collection. I like the brand but they’re going too fast and I won’t be getting anything from them this holiday season.

Full marks for packaging. They sure do look pretty.
I think they’re over-reaching a bit with the “cheekbone highlight” bit. Who wants to walk around looking bruised? Christine can usually make most cheek products look good but I can’t help but be aghast at these. Even the neutral colours.
Pretty enough as eyeshadows though, but are they groundbreaking colours?

Probably not every day cheek wear for most of us, but if you look at the models in the promo photos, they did use some of these colors as highlighters and they did look gorgeous, especially on some of the models with really deep skin tones. So if you do a lot of editorial, costuming, drag makeup… you might use these as highlights.

But I agree with you about these not being particularly ground-breaking. They’re pretty, the packaging is pretty, but I’ve already got much more exciting loose pigments in my stash and I almost never use them.

Okee. I’ve got a problem with this set. $99 for 7 pigments that utterly lack all the unique complexity one almost always finds in either Indie brands or even brands such as MUFE and MAC. Actually, I only spot two shades that are a bit creative; Cleopatra and Raspberry Rave. I love RiRi, I love her brand. But, she is NOT Pat McGrath! Or Natasha Denona, either. And this set doesn’t come close in quality or quantity to either of the aforementioned.

I have to admit my first reaction to the various blues and purple on your cheeks was “OMG Christine has a terrible bruise on her cheek”, but glad to see I was wrong. I really like the raspberry over the black lipstick. Unfortunately, though, I wouldn’t ever wear it.

Your lip looks are so stunning! If they used your combos in the advertising I’m sure it would’ve sold better lol! I really like them as lip toppers vs anything else… but Love the brand still. Thanks as always for your hard work Christine!

I have used, and have seen used, golds, burgundies, blues, purples, (greens, gunmetals) deeper than these on Black and dark skin models, and on Black friends with darker skin than mine, used as highlights, blushes, looking fabulous in the sun bronzer shades. I appreciate that Fenty stays true to their customers. And I really appreciate Christine staying true to the people that read her blog and testing these on cheeks! Every shade is Christine’s shade!

I love that you went all in and used them all on your cheeks even though most do look pretty odd. I always admire the fact that you can manage to smile for pics regardless of the item’s performance. I know I would have a hard time making a “normal” facial expression when a product gets an F rating or something looks more appropriate for a Smurf.

Well, I don’t really pass judgment on colors – like what doesn’t work on me or doesn’t appeal to my own preferences, I figure someone else will enjoy it, so there’s no reason for me to frown about it. For example, I could certainly see a blue blush/highlighter working – it would likely be about creating a look centered around the product. With an icy silver or white highlighter, smoky eyes, and maybe a black or silver lip, could be quite futuristic and lovely.
