Download: Price per Ounce – Eye Products (High-End)
This price-per-ounce guide to high-end eye products was compiled and provided by Temptalia.com. We took popular brands and products along with current pricing (as of Fall 2012) and quantity in ounces to come up with price-per-ounce (PPO). This makes it easier to compare pricing across brands.
For example, if you expect to finish a product and/or re-purchase, PPO can be important. If you rarely finish any products and find yourself using a product only a few times before moving on, then the actual price (regardless of how much product you’re getting) will be more important.
Product quantities were taken from our product reviews as well as retailer websites. All quantities were rounded to the nearest thousandth (e.g. a product that contains 0.00945 will show as 0.009 oz. but the PPO is calculated using the actual quantity). Many eyeliners range between 0.001 and 0.048, so we felt it important to show the distinction and round further out in this category.

I hope to do one more–for cheek products–and that will be that for awhile 🙂
I rarely go through eyeshadows so these figures have less impact on me. However, the base creams, mascara, brow, and eyeliner figures are very important. These are products I will typically finish or get close to finishing before I subsequently restock. Some of the results are quite shocking and you get to see how clever the cosmetics companies can be in manipulating packaging to get you to part with even more of your hard earned money. Invaluable tool! Thanks so much Christine for your dedication to keeping us informed 🙂
This is so awesome! Thank you for doing this! Would it be possible to post it in Excel, so it can be sorted by brands as well?
FYI – I think under mascaras, you have a typo on one of the Sephora brand ones.
Thanks Jeanne – fixed it!
Tarte?!! $18,000?? Holy Moly.
Exactly my thoughts! That’s one brand I have started using a lot 🙁
This is AMAZING, Christine!! Thank you so much for doing this!!
One of my biggest focal points when purchasing products is the value – while the product may work well, if I can find something with better value that works just as well (i.e. Bobbi Brown gel eyeliners vs. MAC Fluidline) I’ll opt for the cheaper one.
Maybe you could add another column to the right of the “Price per Ounce” and have a rating next to it that shows how you rated the product? I realize this may be difficult because there are different ratings within products. Another idea might be to include a link to the swatch gallery for each particular product, so we can see different swatches and ratings? This would mean it’s no longer in PDF format, though and likely a part of your actual website.
At any rate, this is EXTREMELY useful and fantastic; thank you so much. I love how you think of your readers and what adds value to their shopping experience.
Thank you for the suggestions, Jillian!
I will say that I’ve probably only reviewed a mere 10% or less of the products listed!
Fair enough! Those were just thoughts that popped into my head as I was scanning the PDF – I kept thinking, “Oooh, I wonder what Christine’s thoughts on this product are!” But then again, I find myself thinking that frequently when I go to purchase a product – “What does Christine think?”
I don’t think the absence of ratings/links to swatches though detracts from the value of these documents – the real usefulness comes into the main price per ounce comparison! Such a great tool.
I appreciate the suggestions! 🙂
Thank you, Jillian!!
This is a great resource, thank you for doing these spreadsheets! I’m sure they took a long time to prepare, and they’re a real eye-opener in some respects so I echo the other poster, thanks for keeping us informed. 🙂
Christine, you are a truly truly truly thoughtful blogger! Thank you so much for this!
thanks for the hard work christine!!!!!
could you also do one for concealers? i think that would be extremely helpful since it’s one of those things we tend to use up and repurchase pretty fast.
thank you so much!!!:)
wow this was so informative! downloaded onto my phone so i can keep this in mind when i’m buying 🙂 thanks so much Christine!
Talk about detailed work on your part. You and your web site are so impressive. Good work on yet another useful diagnostic tool for us.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING TARTE.
LOOK AT YOUR LIFE. LOOK AT YOUR CHOICES.
LOLing IRL at this comment.
Really Tarte, even if they’re not always the most expensive overall they seem to give small quantities in a lot of their eye products.
While I was shocked and I can’t really disagree, I WILL say that my Tarte products seem to last longer than many of my others because they are so pigmented and don’t require me to use as much. That said, wow.. lol Just wow..
lol @ mac eye brows!
thanks christine!
this is awesome! I am quite surprised by some of the price comparisons. thank you for doing this!
Is there a particular reason Estée Lauder is not included at all?
I used Sephora for a lot of the products and tried to remember the brands that were major but didn’t sell at Sephora – sorry I missed Estee Lauder!
All I can say is WOW! This is an amazing resource!! Thank you so much for this, Christine!
this is so great, thanks Christine! I do have a point to make though – and I’m not at all asking you to add this additional info, but just something to ponder in general
these are all US prices right? I live in Australia, so it’s interesting to see how these have compared based on US$.
I want to use MAC as an example since I’m familiar with their pricing in US, Australia, NZ and Hong Kong (which I think is the same pricing as Singapore as well). I get most of my MAC products from HK because they’re much cheaper than in AUS or NZ (I think the prices in Asia are more or less the same as in US). MAC prices in AUS and NZ are ridiculous (its pretty much double what the US prices are) – for example, the Eye Kohl in US is $15, but over here its $32 NZ, or $32 AU (which ironically converts to something like $35-$36NZ or something like that). $32 AU converts to $33 US – so when you factor in price differences due to global locations, and then factor in exchange rates as well…it just makes you think, you know, about these makeup companies, how much they’re making off us, and how, by lacking competition in these overseas markets like us Australasians, they’re able to drive the prices up so significantly
looking at the figures you’ve calculated, its almost like im feeling defeated – i feel so ripped off – and yet every makeup brand here charges about as much, if not more, so its like a lose lose situation
I can only repeat what everyone else is saying. Thank you for the mountain of work that went into this. This is an amazing tool with eye-opening expose’. I was sure to download it as soon as I saw it. I’m sure the suggestions will keep rolling in on ways to expand this comparison, but I am grateful for it as is. You do amazing work all around and should be commended for it. Your fans are appreciative :o)
WOW! I know this is a little late, but I really appreciate you compiling this, Christine. My HG eyeliner isn’t very expensive, but when it comes down to PPO, it’s actually quite expensive. And here I was, thinking $12 is so much better than $28. I guess I’m going to have to give Armani Eyes to Kill eyeliner a try!
