Guerlain Gisela Rouge G Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Guerlain Gisela Rouge G Lipstick
Guerlain Gisela Rouge G Lipstick
Guerlain Gisela Rouge G Lipstick ($48.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a warm-toned rusty red with subtle ruby and gold micro-shimmer offset by very subtle orange-brown undertones. Guerlain Habit Rouge is less orange-toned, redder. CoverGirl Burn is darker, redder. Clarins Red Prodige is brighter. Chanel Excessive is brighter, more orange. Guerlain Geisha is similar but a bit more orange. Make Up For Ever #44 is less orange and has no shimmer.
New but also permanent, Gisela is reminiscent of those gold-shimmered reds you see pop up around the holidays, but there’s a little more orange in the red that it reads more autumnal. I think of the changing colors of leaves and fireplaces when I see this color. The color coverage is opaque with little product, and the consistency is creamy without being heavy or slick. I didn’t have any feathering or bleeding, and Gisela wore for six and a half hours. The formula was hydrating and kept my lips feeling hydrated for a few hours post-wear, too.
Guerlain’s lipsticks have a perfume-y scent but no discernible taste and come packaged in a heavy metal case with a flip mirror. It’s elegant to look at, and initially, very luxe and lovely, but practically speaking, it’s almost too heavy, and they’re a pain to store–plus, it’s hard to read the tiny print on the back of the lipstick to see which shade is what. Oh, and they do hold fingerprints. They can take a beating, though. It’s one of my favorite lipstick formulas ever, but I’ve yet to master storage of them!

Hi Christine,
I was wondering: do you have any idea why the regular formula Rouge Gs have been pulled from Nordstrom and Sephora websites? Neither Nordstrom nor Sephora customer service could tell me, and Guerlain CS only said that they are not discontinued and that I can buy directly from their boutiques. Hopefully this is just temporary.
Thanks!
@moena I saw plenty of them up on Nordstrom, but I didn’t see them on Sephora. I emailed Guerlain yesterday asking, so I’ll pass on anything I find out.
@Christine (Temptalia) Oh, good to see they’re back up on Nordstrom! Maybe they just had to update the inventory or something, who knows. Thanks so much for looking into this. 🙂
@moena I just spoke with Guerlain, and they said that Sephora should absolutely being carrying the full range of Rouge G. Sephora stores will actually contain more selection and Rouge Gs will be in more doors going forward.
She did ask me if you could relay what Guerlain store (or if it was online) that gave you the information, because they definitely gave you misinformation!
@Christine (Temptalia) @moena This si really weird, because if you go to sephora.com, they’re not available. The only Rouge G that is available on the website is Rouge G de Guerlain Série Noire Jewel Lipstick Compact. I actually emailed Sephora about this and they told me “Unfortunately we no longer carry Rouge G lipsticks at Sephora. What we do have is the Serie Noire […]”
And then I got a list of alternaties including Rouge Automatique and Dior Addict Extreme. This was in June, so unless something’s changed between then and now?
@Christine (Temptalia) Thankfully, Rouge Gs are back on the Sephora site as well. Perhaps they had to change the product details in anticipation of the new shades or something.
And I don’t feel like the Guerlain associate gave misinformation, simply that she had no comment on availability at Sephora and Nordstrom. This is what she said:
“Dear Miss, I acknowledge receipt of your mail from 7/12/2012 and I thank you for sending it. I have the pleasure to reassure you that Rouge G de Guerlain lipsticks (regular formula) has not been removed from the Guerlain range. Therefore you can find it at all the Guerlain depositories. You will find all the addresses of our boutiques, our institutes and our points of sale in France as well as the rest of the world in our website http://www.guerlain.com Thank you for your interest in our brand. Yours faithfully, Isabelle ROUSSEAU Customer Relationship Department”
Luckily the point is moot now that the lipstick is back on Nordstrom and Sephora websites. It gave me quite a fright at first because I would be very sad if Rouge Gs were discontinued!
@moena Thank you! 🙂
I don’t usually like reds that lean toward orange/red but I really like this one!
This rich, warm red looks amazing on you Christine. One day, I will be able to walk around rocking a red lip…until then, easing my way into it with drugstore lippies in sheerer formulas 😛
Can’t’ verify since these aren’t out here yet, but this looks like it might be close to Rouge G #26, Gardner, which was released with last year’s holiday collection, but only in Europe and Canada.
If you’d like to see (although obviously photographed under different conditions, on a different person), I have swatches/ photos of Gardner here:

@Kate MacDonald Damn! I wish Gardner was a part of the permanent collection. It looks perfect.
@Kate MacDonald Olga
I have both Gisela and Gardner, and they are IDENTICAL. I mean, absolutely! I got out the Gardner of box with the name to compare with my newly bought Gisela, and…. I was confused! I couldn’t tell one from another and, considering that there is no name on metallic box, I can’t tell now which of them is Gardner and which is Gisela! I am so disappointed I bought absolutely the same color!!
Looks as Gardner was a success and Guerlain decided to make it permanent, but why change the name??
@Olga Ash Good to know! I can certainly see why Gardner would be popular- it’s a 100% perfect autumn shade- but I agree with you that they should just have introduced it to the US. Hmmm… wonder if that means we might get a “sneak preview” of another shade this year??
I love this colour!

A new rouge g – swoon – I totally blame you for the four I have!
@baby in a corner I hold Christine entirely responsible for my collection as well.
This is gorgeous on you, Christine! Very chic & sophisticated. As perfect (and apparently on trend) for fall it may be, it’s a wee bit too orange for me.
@xamyx Precisely what I was thinking! Just a touch too orange, but gorgeous nonetheless.
@wwendalynne @xamyx I’ll echo that 🙂 It’s a gorgeous color, but not one for me. Maybe another shade…
This new lipstick looks promising! Will definitely share this blog with my clients
Most epic color ever
Hi Christine (: What blush are you wearing? It’s gorgeous
NARS Orgasm
Christina, you almost make me want to try one of these lipsticks. They always seem to get such high ratings. However, I can’t spend over $50 after taxes on one lipstick. I kills me that I spent half that on a Nars Velvet Matte pencil.
that packaging is a solid 10! none like it!
Have you tried storing these suckers? LOL! And fingerprints everywhere 🙁
Have to buy this now too. My list grows more every day with Guerlain O:
This is really gorgeous and perfect for fall but I don’t think I can justify the cost for color. But I’m really becoming attracted to these Guerlain lip products– curses!
I storage mine in the box it came in, that way they can stand, and I can see which is which. Not that I have that many of them to choose from, but I’m hoping I will some dag 😉
Amazing colour, I’ll have to try it on, just getting in to orangy colours 🙂
I must…resist…Guerlain! Too dang expensive, but so gorgeous! Sigh.
Love the gold shimmer effect against the rich red. It looks good on you Christine! Any similar MAC dupes? Also, i’m such a big Marilyn Monroe fan and if i remember right..her famous red lipstick is a Guerlain (forgot the shade), but the bummer part is that the shade is discontinued already, right? My question is, is there any Guerlain shade you recommend that’s near to that famous lippie of Marilyn Monroe? Thanks Chistine, you’re the best! 🙂
@jcmeman I’m not very familiar with Marilyn Monroe or what shade of red she was famous for. Have you thought about asking Guerlain on their Facebook? I wonder if they’d have a better idea 🙂
As a side note – I went to the Guerlain counter in Nordstrom’s today and tried this on, and was pleasantly surprised that it looked good on me. It clashed with the red shirt I was wearing, but it’s now on my want list!
Your wallet REALLY has the sympathy of my wallet now!
🙂
it’s GiseLE or GiseLA?
This is Gisela 🙂 There is also a Gisele, but it is a different shade.
