Cle de Peau T9 Extra Rich Lipstick

Cle de Peau Albertine (T9) Extra Rich Lipstick ($60.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a soft pink-tinged peach with a fine golden peach micro-shimmer. MAC Delectable is darker, more orange. MAC To the Future is very similar but doesn’t have the shimmer. MAC Fashion City is more orange. Chanel Santal is very comparable.

Albertine delivers mostly opaque color, but there’s a little hint of translucency. It applies evenly and smoothly, and the formula itself has a fair amount of slip but isn’t too thick, despite the creaminess of the texture. It’s lightweight and comfortable to wear, and this particular shade wore for four and a half hours, which wasn’t particularly long but longer than average for shades of this lightness. This is a very wearable shade, and it is a bit more dupeable and less nuanced compared to some of the other colors available in the Extra Rich formula. I like it, and I am personally drawn to peaches and corals as go-to shades, so it is a color I’d wear often.

Cle de Peau advertises that there are “skincare benefits” in the formula, and while I can’t attest to that, given that I cannot commit to a single formula for six weeks to trial it, I can weigh-in on the short-term benefits like de-emphasis of lip lines (softened after ten to fifteen minutes of wear) and intense hydration. There are a lot of lipsticks that keep lips hydrated while you wear them to the point where your lips are no worse for the wear after they’ve faded, but there are fewer formulas that leave your lips feeling more hydrated than they were when you first applied the product.

You can hardly see my lip freckle – that’s pretty indicative of how opaque it is! Do you mean light? It’s a soft color, so you won’t see a dramatic change from the natural lip color to the lipstick color!

It looks great, would you recommend as a good nude shade? Being Trinidadian I have overly full lips, so anything shiny with sparkle is out.  I love that you mention lots of hydration!  Thanks for the review, the brand look promising!Nicole <3

Wow, that’s really interesting!  It really does ‘look’ sheer and I am thinking that it is the moisture rich texture that makes it look so.  I see you cannot even see your lip freckles so the coverage is definitely there.  Interesting product.  I have never used a cle de peau lippie before.  This reminds me of Guerlain G Galia, but with a lighter/moister look.

Nice but, $60 for one lipstick?  I have their concealer and love it and feel like that is worth the price but a lipstick?  No.  Just no.

blueraccoon Avatar

@TerriMcMillanMansfield May I ask why you’d spend $70 on concealer but not that much on lipstick? I’m not understanding the justification for one but not the other.

TerriMcMillanMansfield Avatar

That’s a good question.  The answer is that at age 46, it is really hard to find a smooth, creamy concealer that I can use on my face and under my eyes without making my eyes look more wrinkly than they already are.  I have tried many concealers and this is the only one that fits the bill.  So it’s a unique item for me and that is worth any price (well, within reason I guess).
As for the lipstick, the market is flooded with them.  While not all are the same quality I find myself quite happy with my MAC’s and Estee Lauders and the like, which have a lower price point than $60.  I mean, what is in this little tube to justify that price?  It costs more than my hourglass foundation and that goes over my whole face.  In any marketplace, a product is only worth what people will pay for it.  Clearly people do like this and will spend the money for it.  I am just not one of them.

blueraccoon Avatar

@TerriMcMillanMansfield I’m 32, and not quite needing concealer for wrinkles yet, so I wouldn’t want to spend $70 on that. But while I wear minimal makeup, I usually/almost always have something on my lips. I haven’t purchased a Cle de Peau lipstick mostly because my HG lippie is Rouge G, and that’s $48, but I’m not necessarily ruling it out.

… Everytime I read about Cle De Peau, the oh-my-goodness of Red Abundance comes to mind. I am in the Netherlands and my budget cannot really afford it at the moment. Big sigh!

Beautiful! It looks amazing on you. Unfortunately this is higher than I’m willing to spend on a lipstick. I’ve given myself a $30 cut off price for lipstick because I just think beyond that has diminishing returns. Maybe if I was a gagillionare. I do spend between $200-$300 per month on makeup, but I just can’t justify this. It is lovely though.

TheresaKlijn Avatar

Looooooove this colour, but there HAS to be a good dupe. I wish I was rich so I wouldn’t blink at a $60 price tag. sigh…..maybe in another life. lol

annedreshfield Avatar

Yowza, $60? I’m not even at the point where I’ll spend that much on foundation! It’s a beautiful color and looks lovely to wear, too, but I just can’t afford that (yet. One can dream…).

nacacijin Avatar

Very pretty color, but there is no lipstick worth $60. I cringe at the $30+ YSL and Dior lipsticks and still haven’t purchased one. Plus there is something strange about the shape of this lipstick (almost like it’s not meant to actually be used?). It reminds me of the Milani lipsticks that I always giggle at when I see them at the drugstore. It’s just gimmicky.

Hannah Avatar

@Makaegan The shape makes it easier to get a sharp edge. I don’t find these difficult to use at all; it’s very intuitive. You should try a high-end lipstick before you categorically knock them. Many formulas of high-end lipsticks are superior to ones found in the drugstore or at MAC.

Alison Cole Avatar

I agree with you, here! I’d much rather have a single lipstick in a perfect shade, in the best formula on the market than five lipsticks that I just “like”. I’m the type of girl who waits and saves for quality, so I’ll love everything that I have.

blueraccoon Avatar

@Alison Cole I’m like this, too. It’s why I saved for my first Rouge G (I have two now, Garance and Garconne) because I will use them over and over and I absolutely love them. I was fine spending the money for Garance because it’s my perfect every day shade and it looks amazing on me, and I know I’ll use it.

nacacijin Avatar

There is no need to get defensive. I have plenty of high end lipsticks, but you have to understand that a quality lipsticks isn’t always about the dollar sign. Just because the lipsticks that I choose to buy don’t cost $60 doesn’t mean they’re not “high end”. What is the benefit of a $60 lipstick when I can get one that is just as good (and sometimes better) and it costs $25? Or, even better, when one costs $7? I respect that you personally enjoy these lipsticks, you certainly don’t have to agree with my opinion, but I don’t respect that you felt the need to patronize me because I think they are overpriced.

nacacijin Avatar

@Alison Cole Oh, I know, the price differential is insane! I haven’t been to Australia, but I’ve been to New Zealand . I think the Nars blushes were like $90! Now I understand why she still orders her cosmetics from the US and has me send them to her. I always thought that the cost of shipping it twice would be insane, but it’s not nearly as bad as what she would have been paying had she bought them in NZ.

This has been my favorite lipstick since it came out, and it’s the only formula on the market that does not dry out my lips. I also love their discontinue color #19, the prettiest pink I own.

Liz Avatar

That looks great on you.  I wouldn’t pay that for lipstick though.  I’ve never bought one piece of makeup that cost that much.  The most expensive thing that I’ve ever bought would be the Naked Palette at $50.

zainab Avatar

I think I’d be really interested to try this brand (though perhaps not this exact colour) just to see if it does live up to the price-tag. But if it’s $60 in the US it would have pretty much priced itself out of the stratosphere here, just going by the markups makeup products get on the ship ride over. And I haven’t seen it on ebay…

Christine-Temptalia Avatar

Not sure where you are, but you never know. I imagine it IS more expensive, but I don’t know how much more. I know some brands seem to have a ton of markup (MAC seems like one of those brands overseas) and others are more comparable. No clue where Cle de Peau falls though!

Alison Cole Avatar

I love getting more coverage of Cle de Peau on Temptalia! This is one of the brands I’m really interested in, and if you’re going to shell out that much for a luxury product, you want to know everything you can. Thanks, Christine!

Quinctia Avatar

Looks great on you!  But, with this sort of shade, I either need the lipstick sheerer or I have to block out my lips with liner first, so it’s a definite pass for me, even if it were a bargain line, haha.

blueraccoon Avatar

This color wouldn’t work for me, but every time one of these comes up on the blog I’m tempted to find one that actually *would* 🙂 And there is a Cle de Peau counter at my local Nordstrom’s. Danger, danger!

Becca Avatar

I know that the Cle de Peau lipsticks are some of your favorites–so I’ve been really curious to try these for a while now. But, I personally can’t seem to justify the price–lipstick has never been my “must-have-don’t-care-about-the-price-because-you-just-have-to-have-it product”. For me, that’s blush and highlighter. But this is so, so pretty and I like that it’s a bit sheer and moisturizing–2 must-haves for my lip products. Might have to give this one a try!

tropicalia7 Avatar

minus the quality! MAC lipstick is drying based on my personal opinion. I also live in Southern California, definitely not humid.

Rocza Avatar

Christine-can you recommend any other lipsticks that also leave your lips feeling more hydrated? They don’t need to be in this color family.  Thank you!

Aeroko Avatar

I bought this several months ago and it was the first time I had spent so much on a lipstick. It is now one of my “go to” lipsticks. Like in the pictures it is a nice peachy nude with a light golden shimmer. When I first got it I was a little disappointed. Then, I went outside with it on. I have gotten more compliments on it then any other of my lipsticks. When the sun hits it, it really brings out the golden shimmer and becomes stunningly beautiful. I ended up buying this for my Mom for her Birthday because she kept trying to steal mine. It’s now her favorite.
