Chanel Blue Boy Le Vernis / Nail Lacquer

Chanel Les Jeans de Chanel Collection Swatches, Photos, Reviews

Chanel Les Jeans de Chanel Collection features three new and limited edition shades of lacquer (each retailing for $29.00 and containing 0.4 fl. oz., which is $4 more than the polishes are normally). Blue Boy (deep, rich blue denim), Blue Rebel (dark wash jeans), and Coco Blue (muted blue) make up the collection of blue-hued lacquers.

  • Blue Boy is a slightly faded, medium-dark blue with a cream finish. I needed three coats for opaque color, though it was more opaque than not at two.The closest dupe I could think of was Essie Lapis of Luxury, which is significantly lighter. Rescue Beauty Lounge Catherine H. has a similar faded quality but the multi-colored shimmer makes it look rather different.
  • Blue Rebel is a dark, navy blue with a cream finish. I used two coats for opaque color coverage, and I felt like the formula was better than it was on Blue Boy and Coco Blue. Rescue Beauty Lounge Dead Calm is deeper, richer. Though still more intense, China Glaze First Mate comes closer.
  • Coco Blue is a light-medium sky blue with barely-there white micro-shimmer. I used three coats for mostly opaque color, but I found the formula to be prone to streaks. The drying time was longer, too, so the polish pulled in places. Chanel Riva is much, much lighter and has less blue tones. Nubar Blue Hydrangea is more similar than Riva, but it’s more vibrant and more of a robin’s egg blue.

What struck me most about this collection had more to do with a slight case of sticker shock. I understand the luxury/designer brand model, and by no means is Chanel lacquer–dollar for dollar–any better than a polish at a fraction of the cost, but what’s with the $4 increase? I was expecting Chanel to add some marketing jargon about a rare ingredient, mixing technique, etc. that would justify the price increase, because Le Vernis jumped from $23 to $25 from the end 2010 to early 2011 already.

The formula on Blue Rebel was the best; really good flow, pigmentation, and no streakiness. Coco Blue was the worst as it was streaky and needed three coats, while Blue Boy was in the middle–no streakiness and decent flow but needed three coats for opaque color. I normally get a week of wear with minor tip wear out of Chanel’s polishes.

I’m always surprised when seemingly simple colors aren’t ones I can easily find dupes of. I’m sure many of you have already picked these polishes up, so I’d love to hear from you if you’ve found any dupes!

Well, I’ll have a go if I see the testers, but I’m pretty sure this is going to be a Pass from me. Thanks for the review though, it’s practically as good as testing it myself. 😀

I overlooked these completely but seeing the swatches makes me really want Blue Boy. I think you’re right in that they seems such basic colours but I can’t think of any good dupes for any of them. Maybe that’s why I think they actually look quite unusual on the nail.

$29? *faints* I love a good blue nail polish, and I can see myself wearing all the colours but yikes. It would have to be a Super Cool Unique polish for me to spend that much. And these aren’t it.

I bought Blue Boy when I ordered Graphite after FNO, and wow, it’s in my top ten polishes! No, it’s not shockingly, obviously special, but I’m not really that interested in blue polish but Blue Boy is the perfect, slightly dusty, medium blue. Perfect. No, it’s not obviously special, but they are so, so special if you appreciate nuances in colour. For me, a dupe wouldn’t work… the Chanel polishes are perfect in colour and tone.

Your swatches are the first to make me actually want Blue Rebel. From other bloggers it looks like it leaned a little green, and I want blue! Now it’s sold out, though, so looks like I missed the boat on that. Oh well. I did get Blue Boy and Coco Blue, though.

I am definitely interested to see how Nubar’s collection compares, since they are much more affordable.

Thank you Christine for reviewing these. I’ve been slapping myself on the wrist every time I go to purchase them. The price increase really is something to scoff at. It was bad enough at $23, but $29 is ridiculous. I don’t have any exact dupes but I have plenty that are adequate enough.

You get a week wear with Chanel? Mine only lasts barely 48 hours, if lucky. Then it chips and peels off, even with a top coat. butter London is between Blue Boy and Blue Rebel, if someone wants a dupe! It is a deep royal blue and fairly opaque in one coat, completely in two. 🙂

Interesting, but not interesting enough. And a $29 price tag?! I’m still recovering from the sticker shock of the price jumping to $25! It’s going to have be ridiculously special to get me to buy another Chanel polish.

Hi Christine,

Love the look on your nails. Are these natural or silk/acrylic? Hope this is not too personal, it’s just that I have had silk extensions and naipolish applied much nicer than on my natural nails. Thanks!

I’m wearing blue boy right now actually! I love it- it’s such a smoky blue….like a stormy sky and the sea at 7 pm all mixed up. Perfect with my gray suit at work today 🙂

I think this depends on your liking. I love the jelly texture on all colours and specially coco blue. When it does not give the full thick coverage,it does not mean they do not have good quality. 🙂

I don’t know why anyone would pay so much money for such lackluster, plain colors. Chanel has some gorgeous colors that, to me, are worth the price tag, but these? Meh. I’ll pass.
