Chanel Codes Subtils (278) Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
Codes Subtils (278)
Chanel Codes Subtils (278) Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow Quad ($61.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette for spring. The formula is the same as the other quads in the Les 4 Ombres range, which is supposed to be “vibrant, pigment-rich” with “long-lasting pigments” and “effortless application.” All four eyeshadows had a really soft, finely-milled quality that made application easy–I had no trouble applying and blending out the eyeshadows to create a cohesive look.

Codes Subtils (278)
LELimited Edition. $70.00.
Codes Subtils #1
Codes Subtils #1 is a medium-dark peach with warm undertones and a frosted finish. The texture was soft and smooth to the touch without being dusty or thin. The eyeshadow applied with opaque coverage to the lid and blended out with ease. This shade started to fade after eight hours of wear.

LELimited Edition.
Codes Subtils #2
Codes Subtils #2 is a light-medium golden brown with flecks of copper and gold shimmer paired wit a metallic finish. It had great pigmentation with a smooth, blendable texture that wasn’t too soft or too firm in the pan, so I didn’t have any issues with fallout or dustiness but still was able to work with the eyeshadow on bare skin. This shade wore well for eight hours on me.

Codes Subtils #3
Codes Subtils #3 is a medium brown with warm, yellowish undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was soft, finely-milled, and smooth to the touch, which translated to a very blendable, easy-to-use eyeshadow on the lids. It had good color payoff, though not quite opaque, but it was buildable so either adding a little more or using a primer underneath should get it to full coverage, if desired. It started to fade after eight hours on my lids.

Codes Subtils #4
Codes Subtils #4 is a blackened brown with a fine, forest green pearl. It had opaque color coverage with a silky-smooth consistency that wasn’t too soft in the pan. The eyeshadow blended out nicely in the crease and didn’t appear patchy. I did find that it appeared greener the more I blended and diffused it, as the black base seemed to soften. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading.

Oh no! I’m definitely getting the other quad, Chanel Elegantes, wasn’t planning on getting this one, but these swatches are gorgeous, my kind of colors. And the luminous finish reminds me of Chanel Empriente du Desert. Looks like Chanel is torpedoing my plans for low buy in spring
Oh, yes, both of them are reminiscent of the finish on Empreinte du Desert. I think the formulas are different (Empreinte is denser overall, IMO), but they have that “melted” look on the lid.
How does this quad compare to Tisse Rivoli solely in terms of quality?
It’s very similar – they were rated on the same metrics. I don’t remember the exact rating of Tisse Rivoli offhand!
I do….well, I remember that it got a really high rating and was a “Temptalia Recommends” selection which is why I had absolutely no choice whatsoever when it came to buying it (it’s one I use often, so it’s been a very wise purchase).
My goodness, what would the world be without more frosted peach and brown eyeshadow? Very pretty.
lol!
Hmm, while it definitely earned a high grade, I’m not sensing that same infectious, giddy enthusiasm that Empriente du Desert garnered. I like the soft peachy/copper vibe here, however, it seems very dupable. I’m going to wait and see how the other one fares. ?
Possibly, Empriente du Desert is a once in a lifetime type of quad, huh?
Well, here’s hoping it’s not quite ONCE in a lifetime, but it was a really good one 😉
I like the look of this one but I’m really eager to see the other quad. As it turns out and as I suspected, I am already well supplied with dupes for all the shades in this quad, though it has made me suddenly eager to check out MUFE D308, which looks so unusual and gorgeous.
I thought the other might be more up your alley 🙂
Love # 1 and 3, like # 2. Pending review of the other set in the release, it’s likely going on my wish list
I hope the other one is just as good!
Even though neutrals have pretty much been done to death, these are still gorgeous!
I like how they turned out, and you know, for spring, it wasn’t quite what I expected!
The shadows combinaison is interesting and the colours lovely! Your look is really elegant Christine ?.
Thanks, Marie-Estelle!
Oh, I’m so torn! I love the look of them all. I’m just not sure how they would look on me.
Awww!
What a stunning, beautiful little palette of really co-ordinated shades. Love it and your eye look Christine.
Thank you so much, Genevieve!
Will this be available at Nordstrom or is it a Chanel online exclusive?
I believe it’s already on Nordstrom!
That’s a very pretty look! Nice to see a well performing palette from a high end brand.
Thank you, Claire! 🙂
I love the look of this quad. So glad it performed well. I think I’ll be purchasing this one. 🙂
Yay! 🙂
I am so happy that this quad scored well. The colors are well coordinated and the look that you created is really lovely. I wasn’t sure about #4 in the pan but seeing it swatched and reading your review I think it is going to work well for me. I like the greenish undertone and love that it becomes even greener with blending. I love green!
Assuming the other quad scores as well I think they will both be coming home with me. For sure this one, anyway.
It’s a gorgeous quad. I love your eye look, Christine!
Aw, thank you Tracey!
Lovely!!!
Glad ya liked it!
Neutrals are certainly nothing new, but these neutrals were done very well!
Well-said!
Hi I was wondering… It says limited edition on the quad… But then permanent on the individual shades. Are they limited or permanent? Hoping its permanent…..
Sorry, Roselyn – that’s just me being a complete moron! I’m so sorry about the confusion and making it a totally unnecessary task for you to have to ask me in the first place. I totally wasted your time, and I can’t apologize enough – I feel quite awful.
No need to apologize ma’am. I think you do an amazing job with your blog and I read it every day sometimes multiple times a day! I’ve decided to attempt trying to curb my makeup spending so I’m using your blog as a resource to only buy the best products (i.e. temptalia recommended and an A+ rating)…. =). Sometimes, if a product limited edition, then self-control goes out the window… so your blog is an excellent resource if used properly. Thanks for all you do.
You are very kind! Thank you so much, Roselyn!
Christine;
I see Candeur et Experience in the Spring line up. Are they re-doing the formula? I bought this a few months ago and it’s one of my all time favorites. These quads are beautiful. Trying to wait till January when some of the Spring line up comes out. Very exciting. Can’t wait for Dior Gradation, Guerlain Happy Glow and Lancome Absolutely Rose.
Hi Lorrie,
I don’t see it listed in the spring/summer collection on their website, so I’m not sure what you mean.
Definitely NOT ready for spring yet! But this is gorgeous! A good performing quad from Chanel is like heaven!
True!
Wow, this is really beautiful! I wasn’t too excited about Chanel Spring – yet – but I look forward to checking this quad out 🙂
Hi Christine,
I was wondering if you’d had the chance to try Jardins Éclatants yet? If you have, which do you prefer – Codes Subtils or Jardins Éclatants? Thanks!
Sorry, I don’t have that.
