Sneak Peek: Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Palettes Photos & Swatches

Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Palettes
Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Palettes

Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Palettes ($29.00 for 0.27 oz.) recently had an early access, one-day release but will be released again shortly (12/2 on Smashbox’s website at the very least) and are part of spring’s launches. There are seven variations, and they are a slim, compact palette (they actually contain more than it seems like they would, given their size). I’ll be working through them and hope to have some reviews sooner rather than later.

Check out swatches of ALL seven palettes!

Really impressed by these! Good job Smashbox.
The size and price of these are really great. Can definitely see a lot of people buying these instead of the $50 larger palettes that have flooded the market.

Despite lots of great individual colors, however, there isn’t one I would buy…. Maybe “Smoky” if the taupe in the palette was less green. Or “Bold”, but just for Stormy and Techno.

Look forward to your review.

I received the Matte palette just this morning. It is pretty but it is really much smaller than expected — even smaller than the TF Chocolate Chip palettes. I’ll have to see how it performs but at $29 each, I don’t know if I’ll purchase any more of these mini palettes.

DahmerDoll Avatar

I haven’t bought a Smashbox product for at least five years…until last weekend, when, on a whim, I ordered the Ablaze palette. Depending on your reviews of their performance, I may just have to get a few more!

Several of these are really lovely. They look like they are swatching okay? I particularly like the Big Night palette. Looking forward to your review, Christine.

GASPING at some of these. I’m the person always, always talking about how much she dislikes orange toned eyeshadows but I am absolutely enraptured with Siesta. I really want the Smokey palette – Rock Me is stunning, as are Headline and Hell Ya, and the other shadows look terrific too. In the Bold palette, Stormy is so beautiful but the rest of the palette isn’t for me so I’m hoping I have or can purchase a good dupe. I also really like the Golden Hour palette. I hope these will be available at SDM (many of their stores carry Smashbox) so I can “purchase” with Optimum points.

Lulle Avatar

I’m pretty impressed! Smashbox eyeshadow can be hit and miss in my experience, but the formula seems very consistent across all shades here, including the mattes. I’m not sure any of the palettes would bring something new to my stash, but I may indulge considering the rather affordable price!

I’m living for that green pallet!!! It’s so STUNNING.

Also, I know this is kinda controversial. But I am Native/First Nations. And Im so tired of our words/language being used for stuff like this.
(I’m talking about the one eye shadow being called Moccasin)

We are real people! And I’m tired of people forgetting that. ?

Barbara R Avatar

Ablaze is beautiful!
I am Chickasaw and Cherokee and while I do find some things very offensive (we are not a Halloween costume), others I don’t. The names of many places are also native words, I don’t find that offensive. To be honest I take pride that our language is still relevant even if others don’t realize it. When i look at the color of Moccasin, I thought to myself… yep, that’s about the color I’d expect. I find it interesting that there is a color called Siesta and one called Nirvana, so we have a Spanish nap and Eastern bliss or enlightenment.
Nice! I already really liked this palette. sometimes I think we become too sensitive, but it really depends on how you see the world. Hope you don’t mind the reply, just thought it was interesting how differently we can take things. 🙂

Shannon. N Avatar

I totally agree with you!! We aren’t a halloween costume!! I am Secwepemc 🙂 Always nice to meet another Native!

I just, don’t like non native profiting off of our words, and languages, and culture.

If smashbox was run by say a native women, I’d have no issue at all!!

I’m just a frustrated, cranky, First nations gal ahaha!

ShariP Avatar

I too am partially Native, Choctaw. I have always thought more like you Barbara…not a costume, but a source of pride. Not that everyone needs to see it my way and no offense meant. I think it just goes to show we are all individuals and come together to share our love of beauty.

Should have mentioned in my initial comment (for anyone who hasn’t yet seen how small the TF Chocolate Chip palettes are that I referred to as a comparison) that the Smashbox palettes are a little bit larger than a credit card, i.e. tiny!

Katherine T. Avatar

I’ve never been impressed by Smashbox shadows (thought they were more miss than hit), but with the exception of that last palette, these all look decent to great. That Relaxed one sure looks like an ABH knockoff, the Bold one looks like a knockoff of NYX Ultimate Brights, and the Matte one a smaller version of Nordstrom x MAC C’est Chic Matte palette, but if the quality is there, then great. Also liking a number of the other ones, and the $29 price is awesome.

Rose Avatar

I disagree that Bold looks like a knockoff of the NYX palette. The bright colors of Bold are matte, most notably the red. Shimmer shades are easier to manufacture well, but bright mattes are much more rare to get right IMO.

Katherine T. Avatar

I have the NYX Ultimate Brights palette, and there are only 3 shades that have some shimmer in the pan, but all 16 swatch pretty much matte. And with primer, it’s a very decent palette, for the price and the fact that they are all colorful mattes. It’s definitely a unique palette, and since it’s supposed to be LE, glad Smashbox came out with one too

kjh Avatar

Ditto. Seem to like the few cooler shades sprinkled in, and they don’t suck out loud. Too bad singles a la abh aren’t in everyone’s game. It’d be a great shade to put in a self selected quad.

Kayla Avatar

They are technically part of the Spring 2017 line, so I’m sure they’ll at least be available through the new year and into spring, I’d say stores won’t take them off the shelves before March. Though I’m not sure how long your no-buy is for, heh.

thirteen Avatar

I am no-buying for ALL OF 2017. Capslock because it feels very dramatic to me! We’ll see how it goes but right now I am feeling dedicated to using the stuff I already have instead of constantly trying to acquire more. 🙂

Kayla Avatar

Oh, holy cow! That’s impressive! I’m not sure I could accomplish such a feat myself, haha, but I wish you well in your efforts! I think I’m going to really cap myself significantly in the new year. I won’t say no-buy, because then I’ll feel horrible and defeated if I break it, but I will definitely limit myself and also concentrate on using what I already have. I’m more concerned with purchasing or DIYing better storage methods for it. Maybe if I can SEE it all in an organized way, I’ll know what I already have and also be more inclined to use it all up, y’know?

Karen Avatar

I was just thinking of the same thing, I need to reorganize/redesign my storage so I can see what I have. The way it is now I think these would vanish in my collection because they are so tiny! 😉
But still tempting….

Anna Avatar

I got golden hour today and ablaze will arrive tomorrow. Actually I’m really disappointed in this product. It’s not really that pigmented and it’s so tiny- like fun sized. Thanks Christine for the swatches.

Claire L Avatar

These look like fun palettes for not a lot of money! My favourites so far are Ablaze and Bold. The matte one looks the weakest but I suppose for $29 it’s not bad.

Tamara Avatar

I got Golden Hour and Ablaze. The packaging is nice and I like the fact that they’re so little and cute and travel-friendly. I’ve tried the three lighter shades in the Golden Hour palette and they didn’t have much pigment. Maybe they would work better with some Glitter Glue? I don’t really care enough to bother. I might try the other three today. I tried Golden Hour and it’s ok. Someone compared it to the ABH Modern Renaissance, but I think it’s much warmer than that. I prefer Modern Ren.

CATZ Avatar

My first post…Well too bad you can’t make your own palette! There is about one out of each that I like, with the exception of the SMOKEY COVER SHOT which has three. All of the dark metallics are what scream to me and I have six I like and then make Techno and Rock Me the two large pans and it would be a perfect complement to any nude matte palette, if only! Are you listening Smashbox?!?

Sarah Avatar

Wowwwww. I’m impressed! Only a few shades, particularly Poolside, look like they need improvements. These look infinitely better than I was expecting to be honest!!! Ablaze looks like a nicely compact version of ABH Modern Renessaince and I think some really fun looks could come from mixing Bold with something like the BH Foil Eyes palette. I’m excited to try these!

Nyx Avatar

I love Ablaze and Golden Hour but between the Modern Renaissance and the Mario palette plus others i have all those shadows covered. These palettes look pretty good Smashbox!

tugce Avatar

The color combinations remind me of Viseart palettes. I always found the general scheme of the Sultry Muse palette unusual and Metallic Cover Shot looks similar. There is one brights palette, one that is similar to the Bijoux Royal, etc.

Am I imagining things?

ShariP Avatar

Ok, so I thought I’d give an update. I wore three colors from the Golden Hour palette today. They blend beautifully and I had no problems with the application. Within 10 minutes of leaving the house my eyes were watering uncontrollably. By the time I got to work (an hour drive) my eyes were itching like mad and I’d managed to wipe most of the shadow off. I wasn’t able to remove the shadow completely until I got home a couple hours ago, but I’ll be returning the palette. For the record, I don’t normally have sensitivity to makeup. It’s too bad…they were really pretty.

Dawn Avatar

I took one look at this lot and got inspired to rearrange my Buxom palettes into new colour combinations (who needs knew palettes when you can change around the ones you have!)

Having said that, these look fun, especially for travel size compacts.

On a side note, the colour combinations in the ABH MR palette seem to have spawned ubiquitous knock-offs at this point: Huda palette, Violet Voss HG, and this Smashbox Ablaze one. I wish cosmetic companies would come up with fresh ideas and build up from that instead of only chasing what sells. Inspired ideas are the long game, but they can pay off in the end. Of course, a company can take an original idea and milk it forever too (Too Faced and their scratch n’ sniff eyeshadows.)

Veronica Avatar

All a little too warm toned for me, unfortunately. The smoky palette is probably the most wearable for me, but I feel like I have enough of those shades not to justify it.
