Tom Ford Starry Night Eyeshadow Quad ($80.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a middling group of cooler silvers/grays–a smoky eye with a hint of blue–but disappoints across the board. If you tend to like your eyeshadows sheerer, it might still fill those requirements, but the lack of blendability in the darkest shade makes it a lot less foolproof to use, even accounting for preference towards sheerer coverage.

Starry Night #1 is a pale, bluish gray with cool undertones and a pearl shimmer. It had semi-sheer coverage with a thin, dusty consistency that was prone to sheering out. This needs a good base to adhere to or else has a very sheer, faded appearance on the skin. It lasted for seven hours before fading noticeably. Sephora + Pantone Universe Oyster Mushroom (LE, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). theBalm #34 (P, $6.50) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). MAC Rondelle (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Dior Eclectic #3 (LE, ) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Tarina Tarantino Lovely #1 (DC, ) is more shimmery (90% similar). Dior Parisian Sky #3 (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Make Up For Ever D118 Platinum (DC, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Make Up For Ever I120 Snow Gray (DC, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). bareMinerals Cheers (P, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Just Breathe #1 (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). MAC Dark Energy #2 (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Starry Night #2 is a bright, silvery lilac with cool undertones and flecks of metallic silver and warmer lavender-pink sparkle and micro-glitter. The base is semi-sheer but has a heavy dosage of glitter, so it had more semi-opaque coverage overall. The texture was lightly creamy and almost wet-like to the touch. The glittery bits applied smoothly and evenly over the skin, and while not immune from fall out, it was only a minor amount after eight hours (pretty good for no adhesive base). Cle de Peau Silver Eclipse #3 (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Lilac Dream #2 (PiP, ) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Sex & Disco (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Ciate Paradise (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Electric Illumination (LE, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Ice Queen #2 (PiP, ) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Raw Energy (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Natasha Denona Lavender/Gold and Silver (3) (P, $28.00) is darker, more muted (85% similar). Inglot J401 Silver Dollar (LE, $25.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Starry Night #3 is a muted, medium gray with subtle, cool undertones and a soft, pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that was a little thin but not too dusty or powdery. The color lasted for eight hours before fading. NARS Indes Galantes (Left) (DC, $25.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Thunder and Rain #1 (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Chanel Tisse Smoky #3 (PiP, ) is lighter (90% similar). MAC A Waft of Grey #3 (PiP, $21.00) is warmer (90% similar). Cle de Peau Balance (Left) (PiP, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). ColourPop Tink (LE, $6.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Fenty Beauty Brain Freeze (LE, ) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Pat McGrath Divine Mink (PiP, $25.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Rouge Bunny Rouge Trumpeter Koel (P, $19.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Well Past Midnight (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). BH Cosmetics Club Tropicana #27 (LE, ) is darker (85% similar). MAC Stars Align (LE, $25.00) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (85% similar). KVD Beauty Dios (LE, ) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). ColourPop Full Metal (DC, $4.50) is more shimmery, darker, brighter (85% similar). Hourglass Graphite #4 (PiP, ) is darker (85% similar). Dior Smoky Sequins #4 (LE, ) is darker (85% similar). bareMinerals Chateau (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Starry Night #4 is a faded, dark navy blue with a pearly sheen. It had disappointing color payoff with a firmer consistency that made it harder to apply and blend out on the skin. The color lasted for six and a half hours before fading on me. MAC Panda Riot (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). MAC A Sprinkle of Blues #2 (PiP, $21.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Indigo Blend #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Daydream #3 (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Imaginary (DC, $23.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Minx (LE, $19.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Makeup Geek Nautica (DC, $6.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Tory Burch Beauty Midnight (P, ) is less shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty White Suede (Nordstrom) #4 (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). Dior Atlantique #3 (LE, ) is lighter (85% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Moonlight Blue (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Blue Velvet (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). I swatched this in store, and didn’t like it. The color combo is similar to Ice Queen, which the SA said was being DC’d, but I wasn’t impressed with Ice Queen either.

Arghhhh!!! It’s so predictable — the shades that appeal to me most under-perform! Well, at least my wallet will be happy — or less unhappy — since I’m falling for so many of the patent finish lip colors!

I’ve seen really bad palettes before, but seriously? $80 for Revlon quality eyeshadow???? Are they mad?
Oh well, it’s ok, if on rare occasion I want to do a bluish-grayish smokey eye, I have UD Naked Smoky. May not be an A+, but with primer and sponge tips, it definitely becomes an A-!
But this TF quad has smdh and wanting to LoL at the audacity! ???

I’m so surprised! This is my favorite quad and I think stands alone very well where some of the new releases don’t. The celestial in it is incredible and I reach for it all the time (either alone or the whole quad)

Hmmmm. Well, for me – I had 0 formula issues with #s 1-3, so I’m surprised to hear you had such problems with #1. #4 is a different story, but I don’t tend to wear dark colors as the main attraction on my lid because they a) don’t necessarily suit me (deep set eyes and dark circles) b) don’t necessarily suit my lifestyle (corporate America :)). I did invest in the Tom Ford primer when I picked these up, so that may have helped in the application and staying power. I applied #3 to the lower half of my lid, and #1 to the top half, into the crease. I use #4 for the outer V, blended/sheered out.

Which brings me to the celestial. I found the celestial to be amazing and so lovely to work with. It has a gorgeous iridescence and I use it on the inner half of my lid. It breathes amazing life into the grey, but really any color that I apply it over. I think it is the most pigmented and versatile of all the celestials in this new release. Last Dance’s celestial is clearly a special flower, but due to the blackened base, I find it harder to work with than its sister in the Midnight Sea duo (and it therefore has a lesser impact). Sorry, does that help? Im afraid I might just be rambling ! 😡

How disappointing – the only decent colour was Starry Nights 3 – the rest were duds. You wouldn’t want to spend your money on this one. The best blue & grey eye shadow I have found is Shiseido’s Snow Shadow. Beautiful navy and grey colour with white.
