I thought I would have one out of 20, but no. I really like Revlon HD Pink Ruby. Of course we don’t have Revlon here, we used to a long time ago, I really wonder why they stopped distributing their products here. I think they had among the best nailpolishes I knew.
Nyx had some really pretty ones in this list. As did Sephora. Maybe if I use up two glosses, I can buy a new one. Hm, must negotiate with self 🙂
That is so crazy that Revlon isn’t available where you are, Helene 🙁
I think it’s really cool that the market is now flooded with high quality opaque glosses! I’m a fan of it, sometimes.
My personal faves are: Nyx IBG in Apple Crisp, Berry Strudel, and planning on getting Spice Cake and Tres Leches. Last winter I bought 4 Revlon HD glosses, love 3 of them: Strawberry Topaz, Pink Ruby and Smoky Topaz, but I hate Pink Sapphire. Love the one by Sephora I got recently, Pomegranate Delirium! Need a few more of those by Sephora!
Me too! It just goes to show that the idea that a gloss is sheer or can’t be pigmented is so far from today’s reality!
They’re so pricey that I hate how much I love them, but Tom Ford’s lip glosses are opaque and lovely. I hardly ever buy lip gloss so I suppose the occasional splurge on TF glosses is justifiable to me ha. I think my top favorites are Wet Violet (purple plum), Lost Cherry (perfect vinyl red), and Naked (ridiculously sexy nude) but all of them are pretty amazing. Loved Marc Jacob’s older formula for the lacquers, especially in purple-plum Truth or Dare. Illamasqua’s Intense glosses are of course perfection. I think Succubus would be a top pick (another vinyl red. Ha. I gravitate to highly pigmented red, plum, purple, and interesting nudes). Also, Bobbi Brown gloss is almost always great and she has some fabulous pigmented shades, especially in the Rich Color and regular gloss lines. Pinks and reds are usually her richest (like Petal and Scarlet).
Thank you for sharing your faves! I have only tried a handful of TF glosses but haven’t found application to be stellar thus far. I also preferred MJB’s prior formula 🙁
The TF formula seems to be really hit or miss with people. On some folks it settles into lines and runs a lot but on others it wears like iron and works great (I’m in the latter group obviously but I’ve definitely seen it go both ways on people’s lips. Gloss I think is very chemistry dependent in my experience. Maybe something to do with body heat, how moist or dry lips are naturally, etc. Definitely notice it when I’m applying to other actors especially since lights and sweat are extreme gloss tests). Naked, of course, especially tends to settle. I tend to get less settlement from lip products than most people do (like NARS Larger Than Life doesn’t settle into my lip lines even in the lightest colors [Turkish Delight, Born This Way, etc] but I have no earthly idea why since that formula in particular seems to thin out, get milky, and settle on people). So yeah, fair warning to DEFINITELY try out Tom Ford gloss before purchase. No reason to spend so much if it slips off and settles and such. Bobbi Brown glosses are probably the ones that I see working with most people. Maybe the right amount of tackiness and stick to overcome usual body chem differences.
So bummed about MJB’s formula though. I was really surprised and disappointed by the change in the lacquers. So much so that I’m still not fully over it ha! I think they took a really special formula with interesting colors and drastically watered it down to a normal gloss. I’m glad to have my old tubes but gloss isn’t like old lipstick. Can’t just keep it fresh and clean with extra TLC and dark/dry places. Eventually the old tubes will have to go and I won’t be able to replace them. That makeup life! 😛 It was just such a surprise since the formula was relatively new and working/selling well and then just vanished overnight in favor of the new, lesser one. No time to grab backups. Every time I use the old ones I get a little melancholy hehe.
Still have yet to try the ABH glosses but I plan to. Gilded alone is just so cool.
Thank you so much, Celia 🙂 Maybe I am on the losing end of the TF Lipgloss formula then! I do have Wet Violet, I believe…
The MJB formula really was a good one – like you said, more unique shades whereas the revamped formula is just more typical of gloss.
The two that come to mind are Chanel Glossimer in Crazy Fuchsia and the sadly discontinued Revlon Colorburst lip gloss in Adorned. I’m not a big lip gloss fan but those are two that I do like and wear. ?
Have you tried Revlon’s HD line? I think the one most like adorned is called Pink Ruby!
The ABH glosses are so lovely. That holiday box set was probably my best purchase of 2015! I think I need to pick up some of the NYX Intense Butter Glosses, but I have been having trouble tracking them down in my city.
YAY! One of my favorites, too! Especially because I didn’t expect them to be so good!
Well, I like my glosses super-pigmented and glossy, so it’s no surprise I already have 7 of these ( 2 of the NYX and 5 of the Revlon Ultra HDs), and I’m eyeing Sephora Lady Luck.
Lady Luck is a cool one – not as common in gloss form!
I prefer the cool-toned ones, but they’re all gorgeous!
Lots of pretty picks for sure!
I rarely wear gloss. I think I just don’t like the feel of it very much. If I don’t want to wear an opaque lipstick, I’d rather wear a (good) sheer lipstick or a tinted balm. However, some of the options on the cool list here have been on my wish list for a long time because they look so pretty — Revlon Pink Ruby and HD Tourmaline, Sephora Ultra Violet; and NYX Spice Cake and Funnel Delight have been on my radar; and I just added Anastasia Weekend Barbie and Sephora Plum Fiction to my wish list, because they’re so pretty, too. Another problem is that I have difficulty wielding the longer wands accurately. Plus, I don’t mind sticking the wand back in the tube when I’ve just applied to clean lips in the morning, but I kind of hate sticking it back in the tube when I re-apply after eating during the day. I feel like glosses should only last about as long as mascaras because of this, making the less expensive options more appealing than the higher-end options. I think I prefer a gloss that you squeeze out and apply with your own brush, even though that’s less convenient.
I think the NYX ones are really a good option to try if you want something opaque, glossy, and don’t want to spend a lot on something you might not wear often!
Yes, or Revlon when ULTA is having a BOGO 50% off 🙂
Do you have a lip brush you don’t mind cleaning thoroughly? I keep a couple extra around for glosses only so I never double-dip if I’m applying to others (and for personal use sometimes, really. Occasionally I don’t like the brushes or applicators included and just prefer my own lip brushes. Like with NARS Larger Than Life and their itty bitty tiny wittle mini “brushes” that are like six strands of fibre hehe). Of course, glosses gunk up brushes pretty quick and don’t require the most precise application so consider a cheap lip brush or getting something disposable like a wand applicator pack to apply. I’m not breaking out my Kevyn Aucoin or MUFE lip brushes for it, but drugstore ones I can be rougher with are a good solution. They will clean out well though!
That’s a good idea. I picked up some from Real Techniques, but they didn’t last very long — the bristles fell out when I soaked them in alcohol for just a few minutes! I think I’ll look for a wand applicator pack.
Alcohol can be very rough on brushes. I recommend using a mild soap instead 🙂 Should help prevent some breakage. Let me know if you’d like any cleanser suggestions! But yeah, some brushes just don’t hold up to the wash test! Good luck finding the pack or brush that does end up working for you.
I like the solid cleansers from Beautyblender and Sephora, but like to disinfect eye and lip brushes with alcohol (and use mostly synthetic eye and lip brushes partly because of that). I soaked the lip brush for a few minutes trying to get out some stubborn pigment, but that turned out to be a mistake!
Oh yes, the NYX Butter Glosses are good! One of my favorites is Cherry Cheese Cake.
They are so good!
Have you tried Lancome Lip Lover gloss? It’s by far the best lip gloss I’ve tried. Long wearing, not sticky, no weird taste, highly pigmented- they are my favorite. I’m surprised I haven’t seen them up here yet.
I only tried a few of them, but I don’t remember them being opaque (more semi-sheer to semi-opaque) – which shades would you recommend?
336 Orange Manege, 321 Rose Contre-temps, and 353 (but I suspect this one is either discontinued or unavailable in US- I bought it in France and couldn’t find this shade available on Lancome’s site).
Ooooh, my wishlist just got longer! I’m glad so many of these are on the more budget-friendly side, too.
And those last three on the warm list remind me a lot of the lipsticks in the early 70’s magazines I remember getting to cut up for collages in junior high art class, since the library was purging them from their collection. I remember they all had a sort of warm “glow” to them that I rarely see. I usually prefer cool tones, but I’m going to have to pick up one of those.
Thank goodness for those NYX Butter Glosses!!
You have most of my favorites up here! I agree with your Revlon HD and Nyx Intense Butter Gloss picks and add Nyx Apple Crisp. I have yet to try Sephora, ABH or the MUFE ones (I just have Beetle).
I love CoverGirl Lip Lavas, especially Look It’s Lava! and Lava Rider. I also really like: e.l.f. Lip Kiss Balm (except for Bare Kiss; not very pigmented), e.l.f. EX-tra Lip Gloss, e.l.f. Lip Balm Tint in Berry, Rimmel London Stay Glossy Lip Gloss 480 Black Diva, Hard Candy Fierce Effects in Daredevil.
Apple Crisp is a good one!
For the cost nothing beats the NYX glosses. I have a number of them, my favorite is Eclair. I checked out the new shades at Ulta and picked up oatmeal raisin and a cranberry one.
They have some good ones!
Revlon and Nyx, in general, are my jam for lip glosses. I have trouble spending a lot on glosses because I don’t enjoy wearing them as much as other lip products. But those two brands are generally affordable, and I really like their formulas on top of it.
Isn’t it interesting how opaque glosses are done best by budget brands? Go figure.
I prefer opaque lip products, which is why I never used to bother with gloss until maybe two years ago, when these formulas came in. Still do prefer liquid lipsticks/ regular lipsticks though.
Totally understand! Lipsticks are probably less maintenance!
I have three of these: all by NYX or Revlon. I’m still loving Pink Ruby…I feel flirty when I wear it!
Nice 😀
I really like Mac’s Vamplify formula. I recently got Tuned In, the color is beautiful and stays put, wish they were permanent.
Me too! I think it is one of their better gloss formulas.
Anastasia is my favorite brand for glosses. They are seriously opaque even on my dark skin so that was a major plus for me. I haven’t tried the Revlon but by the looks of the swatches I am gonna pick up that Citrine, Pink Ruby and Tourmaline.
So great to hear that, Mo! 🙂 I think you may also like Revlon a lot!
I have a few of the Revlon ones. Pink Ruby, Rose Quartz and Strawberry Topaz. Strawberry Topaz on me is a neon color, Pink Ruby looks darker, and Rose Quartz is darker/more nude than pink!
Nice!
