Urban Decay 1993 Matte Revolution Lipstick
Urban Decay 1993 Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “matte medium-brown.” It’s a muted, medium-dark brown with rosy undertones and an almost warm-taupe leaning. It had a natural finish, which is glossier than a true satin (to me)–the sheen was noticeable until an hour and a half into wear, and then it was more satiny. It had rich, opaque pigmentation that applied beautifully with smooth, even coverage that was comfortable to wear but didn’t slide around. It wore for eight hours and didn’t feel drying (I want to say it is a little hydrating, but more in the sense that my lips don’t feel worse for wearing it while it is not hydrating my lips more–maintaining their moisture-level). MAC Double Shot (P, $16.00) is cooler. MAC Tabla (P, $16.00) is darker, brighter. NARS Het Loo (P, $25.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer, less glossy. Maybelline Touchable Taupe (940) (P, $7.49) is lighter, glossier. Bite Beauty Marzipan (P, $28.00) is lighter, warmer. Tom Ford Beauty Gustavo (LE, $32.00) is more shimmery, darker. MAC Persistence (P, $16.00) is lighter, less glossy. MAC Whirl (P, $16.00) is lighter, cooler, less glossy. Maybelline Nude Nuance (P, $7.99) is lighter, cooler, less glossy. Urban Decay Stark Naked Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “matte light nude.” It’s a light-medium, slightly muted peach with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation, but the texture was thicker and heavier that seemed to pull into lip lines noticeably. The texture was creamy and glided on without dragging, but it looked drier on than it felt. The creaminess saved it from wearing really poorly, as the color pulled more and more into lip lines over wear, but the heavier consistency meant you could smooth the color back out by pressing your lips together. It lasted for six and a half hours and was lightly drying after four hours of wear for me. This was my least favorite shade of the nine I tried. MAC Wholesome (LE, $16.00) is lighter. NARS Isola Bella (P, $25.00) is darker, warmer. NARS Floralies (P, $25.00) is lighter, brighter. Too Faced Melted Nude (P, $21.00) is lighter, cooler. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Covet (P, $18.00) is warmer. NARS Liguria (P, $26.00) is warmer. ColourPop Precocious (LE, $5.00) is lighter, more muted. Maybelline Nude Embrace (P, $7.99) is lighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Urban Decay Blackmail Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “matte deep berry wine.” It’s a blackened berry-purple with cooler, pinky-red undertones and a satin sheen. It was mostly opaque, and while application could have been slightly smoother/more even, it was one of the better applying vampy shades I’ve tried. It was creamy enough to glide on without tugging, but it wasn’t slippery or too heavy, so it didn’t slide around. I noticed that this wasn’t a shade that applies well without a lip brush, as it is very hard to get a really crisp edge with the tube. It wore down to more of a semi-matte to matte finish after an hour or so of wear, and on me, the color was still lingering after eight hours with little noticeable fading. My lips didn’t feel dry after wearing it. MAC Soulfully Rich (P, $18.00) is lighter, less glossy. NARS Train Bleu (P, $25.00) is lighter, less glossy. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Anita (P, $18.00) is lighter, warmer. MAC Instigator (P, $16.00) is lighter, warmer. ColourPop Feminist (P, $5.00) is cooler. MAC Prince Noir (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Black Dahlia (P, $18.00) is lighter, glossier. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Formula Summary | Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a new formula releasing on July 8th (later for retailers). There are eleven shades in the range with two exclusive to Urban Decay’s website and freestanding stores. The formula is supposed to be smooth, pigmented, creamy, and “provide long-lasting moisture.” It’s a very pigmented, semi-matte to natural finish formula that wears a really, really long time and wears away evenly without bleeding or feathering. My only issue with these is that they’re more of a satin finish than a true matte one, but if that’s not a deal-breaker, they’re worth checking out. I was extremely impressed by how long-wearing the formula was without being drying. I could wear a shade from 9AM to 9PM and not once think, “I really wish I could apply lip balm.” Some shades have more slip than others, and as a result, the ones with more slip have a more satin-like sheen to them, while a couple were less creamy and applied with more of a semi-matte finish from the get-go. Most shades wore down to a traditional matte (but not liquid lipstick flat-matte finish) within an hour to two of wear. The texture is significantly less creamy with a lot less slip compared to the Sheer Revolution and original Revolution formulas, which have a much more luminous sheen with a slight tackiness to the texture, whereas these have no tackiness and a more velvety feel (they remind me of NARS Audacious Lipsticks in that respect). These hug the lips more as a result but surprisingly, they’re very comfortable to wear. What’s particularly nice is that the texture has some creaminess and weight to it, so while it can transfer onto cups and the like, there’s so much of it that it doesn’t wear away the color, and you can also smooth out any smudges if you dabbed with a napkin. There was no discernible scent or taste.

1993 is bringing back memories of the ’90s. And Blackmail looks like something Kat Von D would’ve come out with.
It is funny, but since I didn’t wear makeup in the 90s, I see them so differently as a result, lol!
I really don’t recall brown lippies to be such a big deal in the ’90s… Granted, Bobbi Brown was establishing her brand in the mainstream market, but aside from her line, I don’t recall any particular lip trend…
Oh, for me it was! I went through many tubes of brown-based pinks and brown-brick reds, always with brown lipliner of course. If you google “1990s brown lipstick” you’ll see what I mean 🙂
Dior Mohair was my 90’s lipstick. 1993 reminds me of it!
That’s awesome!
The name is fantastic. I loved mohair sweaters in the 90’s.
I feel the same way. Lots of 90s shows have women wearing brown-based lip color.
Yes, that’s right! LOL This post is trip down memory lane 🙂
Oh I was all over brown lippies in the late 90’s. Did you ladies do the brown lip liner/deathly nude lipcolor too, or was that just my own makeup fail?
LOL! No I didn’t go that far, but I do remember that look. I had the super dark brown lip liner with brown or red lipstick, it was blended in, but still there.
Gives me the grunge feel. Hahaha
I remember this exact shade of brown being huge. I still have a couple that I wore back in the day. Really dark browns and reddish browns were popular, too. Grunge was huge in the Pacific Northwest, so I saw lots of brown lippies. Then there was dark brown lipliner without lipstick, just bare lips (not a trend I was into).
I do remember brown lips as a trend in the 90s! I even remember wearing brown eyeliner as lip liner! Oh no… lol
LOL ! I had super dark brown lipliner, but at least I filled in my lips with brown or red lipstick, not nude gloss.
Definitely! I remember wearing ‘Toast of New York’ by Revlon and my first department store makeup purchase as a teen sometime in the mid-nineties was ‘Double Fudge’ by Clinique. Think I might have to pick up 1993. The other 2 are really nice as well.
Oh yes!! I remember Toast of New York and Double Fudge 🙂 And I had some lippies from Prescriptives as well – think it was Toffee and Chili Red. And I love Maybelline Crazy for Coffee.
Yep, I was one of those very guilty of doing the brownish grunge lipstick look, LOL! I had ALL of Revlon Colorstay Lipsticks in almost every single shade of brown-red, brown-beige, tan-brown, taupe, etc.! All the Colorstay coordinating lipliners and darker brown liners too, because that was how we wore it ! And a gorgeous one by Lancome, also MAC Paramount was a biggie!
LOL! Oh yes, I remember Revlon Colorstay. And MAC Paramount is such a classic 90s color ! So happy a lot of these colors are still around
Colorstay may well have been the dryest matte lippy I ever wore, LoL! Stuff tore my lips up, but I’d still wear it almost daily! I may have to get a new tube of Paramount!
I need 1993 lol adding it to my sephora wishlist now. thank you Christine!!
No prob, Yuan! xo
1993: oh god yes! And that Zoeva palette, THAT is the review I’m waiting for!!
I love 1993!
1993! Must have!!!
A new fave!
Thank you for putting these reviews up so quickly! Oh my, 1993 brings me back to a happier time, when my children were still young, and while there were challenges, it was still a beautiful chapter of life. So yes, I most likely WILL be buying this. It’ll bring back sunny memories.
That said, however….I *was* all over Blackmail until now. I do NOT think I can pull it off because I have deep naso-labial lines (that I’ve had all my life; hereditary) that would really make it look too harsh. But, I do think I CAN do either MAC Instigator or Nars Train Bleu, as those are not as dark or as harsh in tone.
Enjoy it, Nancy! It is a fantastic shade 🙂
If it helps, UD did also come out with a matching lip pencil for Blackmail!
Thank you, I know I will!
I should have written “naso-labial folds” which are just deep smile lines that I have as a hereditary thing, instead of “nado-labial lines” which are perhaps smokers wrinkles? My problem is that my smile lines can look like I have a perpetual frown going on unless I smile! In which case, because they’re not upper lip wrinkles, a lipliner probably won’t help, but I definitely appreciate your suggestion, I just should have been more clear.
Gotcha! Thank you 🙂
I’m so getting 1993! Love that kind of shade! How does it compare to MAC Velvet Teddy, I’m thinking less rosy?
Darker, warmer, not as rosy! 🙂
thank you!
SOOOOOO excited for these.
I have loved most of UD’s Revolution lipsticks and I’m just so happy that the mattes seem them be faring well. 1993 is probabaly going to be my favorite….very flattering neutral for my skintone plus 1993 is the year I was born lol
It’s becoming one of my favorite matte formulas!
Oh hey! I’m glad the wear on Blackmail is good even if the application is slightly uneven. I’m very pleasantly surprised. I’ll have to check this one out.
It was really quite nice!
So glad 1993 got an A cause that is the only shade I want to get from this line. Blackmail is also an interesting color but I’m not sure I can pull it off :))
Yay!
Absolutely loving 1993! <3
Me too!
Blackmail looks like it would stain your lips for days!
Haha!
1993 looks amazing on you!
Thanks, Mag!
Blackmail does look less patchy than blackened lipsticks normally do. Good job, UD.
I love 1993! So glad it got a good review. Not sure it’s an easy color for me, but… it makes a change from bricks, corals, and berries. :}
Normal vision (not magnified/putting your eyeball up to someone’s lips), I could barely tell!
You look gorgeous in 1993!
Thank you! 🙂
Wow I might have to get Blackmail. I thought it was just a dark berry, but it’s much darker than the darkest lipstick I own (Living Legend). This would look black on me but with the red undertone it wouldn’t look too stark.
It is very dark — almost black but not quite!
1993 and Blackmail look niiice! I have to have them!
Woohoo!
All three of these are so pretty. I’m especially lusting after Blackmail!
They are lovely!
1993 is awesome! I so want that one like now! I can’t order any because they will come when I am gone so I just have to try to get them when I get out of the hospital. But 1993,,After Dark, and Bittersweet are tops of my list so far. I like Blackmail too and am going to try to get it. But, it’s not one of my absolute faves of the ones reviewed thus far. Christine, Cle de Peau’s Sand Beige arrived on my door step today! I had to tell you since I will miss the “Friday Free for Haul” this week. OMG..that is one gorgeous luminizer! 😀
Hope you can wear Sand Beige once or twice before 🙂 Or at least swatch it!
Oh I swatches it staight away! Lol. I’ll probably wear it for the trip up. But, I’m not taking any makeup for the hospital stay. So, it will have to wait at home for me. 🙁
With luck, when you get to use it, you will be feeling so much better! 🙂
Nicole, according to the latest tracking info, the BITE Opal Lip Gloss & Lipstick are suppose to come Thursday evening, and if so, I will post my thoughts under Free Haul For Friday. Something for you to read while recovering
Thank Katherine! I’ll put that in my phone for Saturday . I was told I will likely be in an ” induced coma” until Sat. I’m a nurse so I know it’s basically a precaution with all surgeries around the brain to prevent swelling. So,I’m bummed to miss Free for Haul. But, I will definitely catch up on your opinion and read up on everyone else’s posts! I’ll have to wait until next week to check my Bite goodies out. I have Bare minerals gloss in hypnoist. I’m wondering if the gloss is going to be like that . if so,I hope it wears a little longer for me.
Wishing you a successful surgery, and hope you’ll be back in action real soon, “making up” for any lost time 🙂
Thank you Katherine! Lol..I love your pun. So cute and witty. It’s late and it almost slipped by me! 🙂
Hey Nicole! We’re absolutely swamped right now and summer is our busiest season by far so I haven’t been around much to catch the latest news, or even get my makeup fix..sheesh. So terribly glad I caught this post and certainly send heartfelt wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery to follow. Hang tough girlfriend. xoxo
So sweet of you Wendy! I know everyone is busy. I’m getting ready to head 2 hours north right now to stay the night. I’m a 530am check in. To say I’m nervous is an understatement. Hope to be back overwhelming Christine with comments soon.Going to miss you girls and guys.xoxo
Hi Nicole, hopefully you get to read this before your surgery, hoping I’m not too late, but I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers for a full and SPEEDY recovery! We will all be here waiting to hear from you when you’re able to update us. I know surgery is NEVER fun, having myself just undergone a bunch of biopsies for LS that may have turned into something more, very unpleasant procedure! But I know that what you are are now facing is far more invasive and way more involved. Hang in there, Nicole! We are all in your corner!
Thank you Nancy! Not too late at all and so very sweet of you. Of course I had to do one last check in before I try to get some sleep. Biopsies stink and I am glad that your illness was caught in time. It’s no good for anyone to be sick at all. I will be back to chat asap!
Ooooo…I’ve got my eye on 1993 and Blackmail. And I’m kind of glad they’re not super matte, although I can see it being frustrating for true matte lovers.
I feel like if a brand wants to do matte but really do satin, then they need to make satin a thing or else go “this is our modern take on matte” and hammer in that it’s not quite matte, haha.
A part of me wants Blackmail, but I know id never wear it regularly. It’s a little too expensive to have as a once-a-year color lying around. If there’s ever a sample or mini of it, I’d definitely get that! Lol
A mini would be awesome!
Blackmail looks awesome. The other two are far too brown to suit me, alas!
At least one caught your eye 🙂
These are so gorgeous. I’m still in love with Blackmail.
It is such a rich shade!
1993 is the perfect mix of rose + pink + brown!! Definitely getting it asap! has these launched yet?
Launched today! 🙂
Well, seeing as I’m forever searching for the perfect vamp shade, I might have to get Blackmail. 1993 does indeed remind me of 1993. I used to wear shades like that, but more because those were mostly what was available where I was living. I’m not sure those browns ever suited me. Looks fantastic on you, though!
You’ll have to let me know if Blackmail end sup being that perfect vamp shade for you ;D
I suppose this is the counterpart to the new MAC mattes 🙂 I think after all, even though these are more satiny, that might actually be nicer because true matte lipsticks can sometimes look a bit harsh. After many years of trial and error I have figured out that for me, shimmer, satin and even frosts are more suitable than strict matte or gloss. 1993 and Blackmail look very nice, though you are right, Blackmail very likely needs a lip brush application. Thanks for all the swatches 🙂
I think they’re a nice compromise, as they go more matte within an hour or two (quicker if you blot or take a sip from a cup, etc.), but they are a lot more comfortable and easier to apply!
thanks for the elaboration 🙂 I’ll wait til autumn and then see about 1993 or MAC Stone (or new KvD). The first two probably won’t arrive in stores over here for a while anyways, so I still have some time to decide.
Stark Naked looks good! I love Nars’s Liguria but it was limited edition and I only bought one unfortunately. TBT I’m a Tom Ford Lipstick maven! Urban Decay has surprised me by how great their lip products are!
I really like this new formula!
1993 looks like it could be a nice brown girl nude shade.
I bet it will be!
1993 will be MINE. Even if I have Whirl already. Sooooooo good.
Browns are back!
I am getting 1993!!! Never had this kind of color in my life! <3 The Stark Naked is gorgeous too! TY for the swatches and the beautiful face!
It’s such a great shade, Laarni! You will love it.
Blackmail looks great for a vamp shade! I have never considered a shade this dark but I might have now.. I had something similar to 1993 made at the Bite Beauty Lab last year because I couldn’t find anything like it. Good to see some variety in the line up of pinks 🙂
It’s SO dark but not quite black.
1993 is SO 90’s! I love it! Those were the good old days of Revlon Coffee Bean lipstick and bad matte foundation!
I’m so loving 1993!
I was born in ’93. It’s destiny.
Nice 😉
1993 is an interesting colour that I would like to try – but the others are either too nude or way too dark for me to wear. Love 1993 on you Christine.
Thank you, Genevieve!
Stark naked for sure!!! I may be brave and get 1993. I was only 7 years old in ’93, but I remember lip colors like this being a big deal. (yes my obsession started young:))
Gotta try it 😀
All three of these have serious hit or miss potential! I think you’ll either love or hate ’em. I don’t think I can do 1993 or Blackmail, but Stark Naked? Maybe.
I’d love to see you wearing Blackmail ;D
Blackmail is gorgeous!
Agreed!
Aw, I hate when lipsticks almost melt in a package. I’ve had a few that almost died in shipments this summer. Can’t wait to try these!
A little sweating but no real melting!
Stark Naked is within my “comfort shade range.” I got a chance to try revolution lipstick deluxe sample and fell in love with the quality of it. Love Urban Decay!
I hope you can try it!
I love blackmail!
It’s a cool shade to wear!
Be still my beating heart. When I saw your sneak peek I knew these three were going to be my favorites. So glad they got good reviews! 1993 is gorgeoussss
They’re really nice!
I absolutely love this lipstick!
I was looking for a nude lipstick that was more or less the same level of darkness as my lips and matched my fair warm skin (NC15).
Lots of lipsticks matched my lips in color very closely (Bite’s Matte Crayon in Leche was almost identical), but they looked pink.
The second I tried UD’s Matte lipstick in Stark nude, I knew I had found “the perfect” nude. It is almost the same darkness as my lips and it’s the perfect amount of brick, medium peach, “nude”, to flatter the lips of of any fair lady with warm skin tones. It’ll be your favorite ‘natural’ lips nude lipstick. For a lighter nude, try Smashbox Be Legendary in Nylon Nude.
Back to UD. This lipstick lasted forever on. I wore it with MAC’s Shy Girl over it, but even without it, it was very creamy (but longlasting), not drying.
Woohoo!! So glad to hear you’re enjoying the new formula, too, Isabella!
I purchased 1993 and I love it but I’d like to know what Nyx lipliner best works for this lipstick
I’m not familiar with NYX Lip Liners!
I am so in love with 1993. I didn’t think it was going to look good on me at all but I get SO many compliments when I wear it. Deeper shades are difficult for me to be comfy with, as I am a big fan of the UD Naked glosses and the UD Sheer Revolution lipsticks – but this one is darn sexy!! If you are a darker brunette, it looks absolutely stunning. I love it also, because it reminds me of the lipsticks my mom wore when I was a kid (born in ’90).
1993 is an amazing shade! I’m so glad a lot of readers like it!
