Tarte Pin Up Girl Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush Palette

Tarte Pin Up Girl Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush Palette ($42.00 for 0.79 oz.) includes five shades of blush ranging from brown to peach to plum. Each blush is 0.158 oz. and a full-sized blush is 0.20 oz. for $26. The palette contains $102.70 worth of blush, and more subjectively, for less than the price of two full-sized blushes, you’ll get to try five shades. I liked that there was a variety of finishes, and a decent spectrum of shades from beige to plum to coral. Tarte’s blushes don’t wear as long as twelve hours on me, which is a claim that is repeated over and over again for the formula. The texture of a few of these leaned powdery, and it seemed like the wear time was less than I’ve had with other Tarte shades as a result. If I set aside the 12-hour wear time claim, then the rating would bump up to B+.

Breathless is described as a “pinky beige.” It’s a rosy beige with subtle, warm undertones and a satin-matte finish. There’s a smidgen of “glow” the more you buff and blend out the powder on the skin, but it’s primarily a matte finish. It wore well for eight and a half hours (which is significantly short of 12!). The powder was soft once applied to the skin, but it was a little stiffer in the pan and not quite as pigmented as the other shades. Too Faced Papa Don’t Peach (LE) is darker, more shimmery. Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless (220) (P, $30.00) is warmer. MAC Corol #1 (LE, $21.00) is lighter. Hourglass Dim Infusion (P, $35.00) is warmer. Estee Lauder Sensuous Rose (LE, $28.00) is slightly darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Embraced is described as a “plummy rose.” It’s a medium-dark, cool-toned berry pink with a frosted finish. It had great color payoff, though the texture of the powder was slightly powdery. The more shimmery finish did emphasize pores. The color lasted for eight and a half hours before fading. Clinique Plum Pop (04) (P, $21.00) is brighter, less shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Wicked (P, $55.00) is darker. NYX English Rose (P, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Pink Tea (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery. MAC Divine Desire (LE, $21.00) is darker. MAC Subtle Breeze (LE, $27.00) is less shimmery, not quite as cool-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Whimsy is described as a “light pink.” It’s a cool-toned, light-medium pink with a semi-matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft but powdery texture. The blush wore well for eight hours before fading on me. Makeup Geek Rendezvous (P, $9.99) is darker. Makeup Geek Head Over Heels (P, $9.99) is lighter. MAC Young at Heart (LE, $20.00) is darker, brighter. Urban Decay Blush (P) is similar. Tarte Flush (P, $26.00) is a touch lighter. Givenchy It-Girl Purple (P, $44.00) is cooler-toned, lighter. Tarte Dollface (P, $26.00) is more shimmery. MAC Pure Femininity (LE, $20.00) is similar. theBalm Argyle (P, $22.00) is warmer. theBalm Down Boy (P, $21.00) is similar. MAC Lovecloud (P, $21.00) is warmer, more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Bashful is described as a “rosy peach.” It’s a medium, pink-coral with warm undertones and a soft, golden shimmer-sheen. It had nice color payoff that sat well on the skin, and it was the only shade in the palette that wasn’t powdery–well-balanced between soft, pigmented, and blendable. It wore well for nine hours before fading. Gucci Beauty Coral Flower (P, $49.00) is lighter. Surratt Beauty Ponceau (P, $32.00) is brighter, warmer. Guerlain Coral Blush (LE) is darker. IT Cosmetics Pretty in Peony (P, $24.00) is brighter, darker. MAC Petal Power (LE, $27.00) is lighter. Clinique Peach Pop (02) (P, $21.00) is darker. Tarte True Love (P, $26.00) is less shimmery. Tarte Crave (LE, $26.00) is less shimmery. NARS Day Dream (LE, $29.00) is similar. Too Faced Melt Into Spring (LE) is less sihmmery. NARS Realm of the Senses (Together) (LE, $29.00) is darker. theBalm Frat Boy (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. NYX Summer Peach (P, $5.00) is less shimmery. NYX Pinched (P, $5.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Irreplaceable is described as a “mauve rose.” It’s a medium-dark, rosy pink with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. Applied to my skin, it does take on a warmer look overall, though it is a cool-toned shade that I think will show up more plum-like on cooler complexions. It had great color payoff, and the texture was just a smidgen powdery but fairly blendable. This shade wore well for almost nine hours. Makeup Geek Love Affair (P, $9.99) is warmer, more shimmery. MAC Peaches & Cream (LE, $21.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Sunset Beach (LE, $30.00) is cooler-toned. NARS 413 BLKR (P, $29.00) is darker. Milani Tea Rose (08) (LE, $7.99) is similar. Tarte Fearless (P, $26.00) is lighter. NYX Desert Rose (P, $5.00) is brighter, more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I really like Breathless and Bashful, but those other too would look a hot mess on me. I thought I was going to want this, but I think I’m going to pass. Thanks for the review Christine!

I do think the texture of these is slightly off compared to the FS. but ive never had their palettes to compare, only the FS & Minis. I do think the holiday minis had a smoother texture tho, but i found them to apply the same and wear as usual for me. I have my makeup on for 10hrs and they have lasted all throughout. My favorite from the palette are the right 2, i was slightly disappointed with embraced & breathless

The brand was picked up by a large Japanese compan a while back, so things may have changed. I haven’t purchased anything since the takeover, but I’ve noticed several changes in terms of marketing & actual products. I’m also not sure how much Maureen is still involved with the brand…

meganlisa Avatar

All so pretty on you! Though Embraced did look a little metallic…
I got the four blush set on the Tarte site so am skipping this. I do like Tarte’s holiday stuff this year…and at least they aren’t repeating the same shades over and over again (like some brands!).

Erin Avatar

I already commented this on the preview post, but I ordered this the moment it hit online, and I already returned it. Three of the shades were nearly identical or very similar to last year’s Off the Cuff palette. I fell in love with Breathless, but that didn’t not justify keeping the palette IMO.

Before I returned the palette, I swatched Breathless on my arm and took the arm swatch to the girls at Sephora and MAC. At Sephora, the closest dupe I found was NARS Olympia. It was a tad browner but extremely close. At MAC, the girls gave me several suggestions including Tenderling. Tenderling was in the same family but more pigmented (if I’m not mistaken since I didn’t write it down).

It looks like I’ll be picking up Olympia to use as a blush, even though it’s the same price for that as this whole palette. 🙂 Ah well!

Sheena Avatar

I will get this just because of the 1st and 4th shade!!! I’m glad the 4th one performed well!! I cannot wait to get my hands on this!! Thanks Christine for the swatches!!

Chelsea Avatar

This looks fabulous! Do you plan on picking up or reviewing the Tarte Chic To Cheek Blush set? I’m debating which one to get! Thanks for another awesome review! 😀

I was hoping that Tarte would come out with a new blush palette for the holiday’s this year, because last year’s is great. IMO, I’m not impressed in the least by this year’s blush palette. A couple of the blushes look like they apply patchy & are honestly not flattering. I hope Bashful will eventually become a single blush. Breathless is pretty, but doesn’t look like it will show up on me like I’d like it to. I hope everyone that likes it enjoys it.

It’s okay, as I was shocked to stumble upon Chanel’s Jersey at Neiman’s when I only went there to purchase TF’s Deeper- literally 20 min. & a few hundred $s of retail therapy later, I’m not running short on blushes. Plus, I already have Chanel’s holiday offerings coming to me, including another JC for my collection.

I appreciate the time & effort of your swatching & thourough reviews & dupes. I certainly can afford to back I off the blush binge I’ve been on for the past year and a half, as I stopped wearing blush after middle school & even when I got really involved in MU I wasn’t interested in blushes, what was I thinking?!? More Tarte Blush Palettes for everyone else. I’m still eyeing Tarte’s mini blush set will be a better fit for me. Happy (early) holidays, good health, peace & happiness to you Christine, your family & to all the family of MU obsessed hoarders, lovers & collectors out there.

I really like this palette, but with sooo many things to choose from this time of year, I have to *love* something… Besides, my blush stash has grown exponentially this year alone, and now the benefit palette which has all the shades I’ve been contemplating is being released tomorrow…

Joyfriend Avatar

Thank you for the very thorough review! I think I’ll pass on this one – I have the Off the Cuff blush palette from last year, which I love. Are you planning on reviewing the eyeshadow palette in the Tarte Bon Voyage Holiday set? I don’t own any Tarte eye shadows, so I’m a bit curious LOL!

Eliz Avatar

This would be a blush jackpot to anyone who is looking to build their blush wardrobe since every color seems wearable and there is a nice variety of shades. I am at the point where something needs to really jump out at me in terms of color, finish, and even packaging. I generally like the Amazonian Clay formula, but I don’t find myself reaching for it over others in my collection for some reason.

That said, these all look really lovely applied. Irreplaceable is my favorite here and I would seek it out as a single shade.

Eliz Avatar

Clinique Pop Blushes, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blushes, and Dolce & Gabbana Luminous Cheek Colors seem to be in constant rotation, which are all more silky and seem to have a more complex finish (like I’ve used more than one product). I think I’m getting lazy in my old age and don’t want to have to fuss with lots of blending or layering.

I really, really want to try a Tom Ford Blush (Wicked makes me swoon), but I’m afraid I’ll be spoiled and never give my other blushes any love. Tom Ford tortures me with his refined elegance. But, he and my husband are not friends, at all.

Allison Avatar

The shades look very pretty, but the one Tarte blush that I have from my Matte palette is quite powdery and it definitely doesn’t last on me for 12 hours, though maybe this is a new formula? I love the look of the shades and the inside of the palette packaging, but the outside not so much. I have so many blushes now, in spite of this good deal, I’ll pass.

Mariella Avatar

Sigh…as I feared, the words “Subtle Breeze” appeared in this review. But I think I’m really going to try very hard to resist this…I do have some of the dupes listed there along with Subtle Breeze but the thing is, they’re NOT Subtle Breeze. How I wish MAC would repromote that one.

Dee D Avatar

Everyone talks so much about Exposed Im surprised its not on there. I personally didn’t like the texture of it when I swatched it in store..at all, so I passed on it even though it’s a gorgeous colour. Embraced is calling out to me here but all the rest are passable so I can skip this one. Thanks for the great review!

BeautyCandie Avatar

I ordered this the second I saw it and I love love love it! Tarte blushes are some of the best I’ve tried and I have pretty good success with them lasting as long as I need. It’s rare I need makeup to last more than 8-10 hours and I expect fading with most makeup because of my my exceptionally oily skin. I can see how a claim of 12 hours not panning out would be frustrating, especially since that is something you see on every piece of marketing for these blushes. I think docking the score for that reason is fair. Overall I think this is still a superb deal and good way to build a lovely range of finishes and shades at an affordable price.

P.S. I just LOVE you Christine!!!

Simone Avatar

I can’t help myself i hate the packaing. If i won’t a clutch i’ll buy it. This is not the thing i would bring to a job. I’m a little sad because after last years palette i realy wanted this one…

CeeCee Avatar

This set is nice, but I don’t think it’s quite as pretty as the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Palette for Holiday 2014 you reviewed, Christine. I really love that Hourglass set!

SandraJT Avatar

Will definitely be picking this blush palette up. That seems to be the focus of my holiday shopping this year, although it’s not going to save me any money…..between Hourglass, Chanel, Tarte & a few more, all these new blushes are going to add up to quite a bit!
