The Scarlet Season: MAC Dare You Lipstick

MAC Dare You Lipstick ($14.00) is a gorgeous shade of shimmering ruby red. It’s a deep ruby red with brighter ruby red shimmer laced throughout. It’s incredibly pigmented, and it looks opaque with just one layer. Dare You feels creamy, moisturizing, and it lasts a good four to six hours on my lips. It’s really a stunning red from MAC’s permanent line-up, and if I may–also an overlooked shade!

What about you? Would you wear this red?

The Scarlet Season is a series of posts showcasing and featuring my favorite shades of red lips–from glosses to lipsticks that runs through December 2009. You can sure expect to see a lot of red this holiday season!

I loooove Dare You. On me, it’s basically the same shade as Dubonnet, except the Creamsheen formula feels better. So it’s now my favorite dark red.

It’s so silly that the swatch on MAC’s website is brown, which is probably part of why Dare You isn’t so popular!

At the end of the Scarlet Season, will you post a comparison entry (as you do with nail polish collections) so we can see how they all stack up to each side by side?

Alison Avatar

Wow, I guess you’re right. 70!? Impressive.

I have definitely tracked down some of those discontinued mac shades and can’t wait to try them out! Maybe you could compare all of the mac shades or something fun like that.

Leila Avatar

Oh I thought this was the only shade it came in. I checked the website, it comes in a variety of colors. Do you know the number/name of this particular color you did the swatch on? I was looking for the most similar color to this one but I couldn’t find it myself..

So weird. About a week ago I bought this, and I was trying to look up the Scarlet Season page on it, but evidently you didn’t post it until today, even though I’d sworn I’d seen it already. Dejavu! Anyway, love this.

that is interesting – my Dare You in the tube does not look anything like the picture. mine looks very dark brownish red in the tube and it applies kind of brownish red and there is no shimmer. do you know if there is more than one version of Dare You?

I’m very fair and i chose this one because it seemed more of a burgundy red to me as well. On me it doesn’t look this bright either. But a few people have already mentioned this- maybe it’s because of the different skintones people have? That, or maybe there was a mistake? This shade reminds more of Brave Red cremesheen – well, that one looks similar on me to Christine’s photo.

Petra Avatar

Then it must be the different skintones. 🙂 It’s kind of neat how different a colour can look depending on who’s wearing it.
Btw, this was a great idea, the whole Scarlet Season, Christine! Thanks for the time you put into it!

OMG I want this so bad now! I love this color! My boyfriend just jumped because I came bouncing in to tell him how badly I want it!

Side note-I love your lip shape. I have a solid heart shaped cupids bow, and I wish it was slightly more angled like yours.

Dare You was one of the first reds I tried, actually, back when I thought MAC Cremesheens were a godsend to the dry-lipped (Laura Mercier stickglosses and Dior Addict High Shines and Lipcolors blow them out of the water), but it made me look incredibly sallow. Just not my red.

OMG. I thought I had every MAC perm red, how did I miss this gorgeousness?! Now I know exactly what I’m spending the last bit of the MAC giftcard I got for my birthday on- tonight!

Monica Avatar

i have dare you and i am in LOVE with it. it’s a red that’s easier to wear since it’s not too bright. i’ve only worn it once out but i throw it on in the house just to give myself a little red-lip pick me up..lol.
