MAC x Rocky Horror Picture Show Pigment & Glitters
MAC It’s Not Easy Having a Good Time Pigment ($23.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “sparkling burgundy.” It’s a medium-dark, slightly muted red with warm, copper undertones and a frosted finish. Applied dry, it had a softer, semi-opaque result, and applied with a dampened brush, it was fully opaque and richer/deeper in color. It wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing slightly. The texture isn’t ultra-fine like some of MAC’s Pigments, but it’s not chunky like Kitschmas. Dior Trafalgar #3 (P) is pinker. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren #2 (LE) is similar. Makeup Geek Bitten (P, $5.99) is darker, less warm-toned, less shimmery. Kat Von D WTF (LE) is lighter. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #8 (P, $9.99) is slightly lighter. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #2 (P, $9.99) is redder. Urban Decay Gash (DC, $18.00) is similar. MAC Quartz Fusion (LE, $21.00) is more sparkly. MAC Saffron (LE, $15.00) is more orange. MAC Crimson Tryst (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned. Le Metier de Beaute Fire Lily (P, $30.00) is similar. Sugarpill Asylum (P, $12.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Both of the following Glitters are part of the permanent range, and each comes with the following warning: “Keep entirely clear of eye area. If product enters eye, rinse with water. If irritation occurs, consult your ophthalmologist.” I don’t currently give grades to products like Glitters, because they’re more like a tool, since they need to be mixed with or have something added to them in order to function (e.g. adhesive base or medium, mixed with nail polish, etc.).
MAC 3D Black Glitter ($23.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “black with silver holographic effect.” It’s a loose black glitter with holographic glitter. The holographic effect is quite strong, and you can even see it when staring straight-on, not just at angles. Urban Decay Gunmetal (LE, $19.00) is a liquid eyeliner formula with no holographic effect. Lit Cosmetics Superfly (P, $12.95) is bluer. MAC Black (LE, $21.00) is larger, chunkier glitter with no holographic effect. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Gold Glitter ($23.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “sparkling chunky gold.” It’s a gold and orange-gold loose glitter with larger and smaller pieces. Lit Cosmetics Rich & Famous (P, $12.95)See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Hi Alie,
I posted sneak peek swatches yesterday!
The glitters are so pretty!
At the same time I can’t help but feel that maybe they shouldn’t release these in collections. Or at lease make sure the MUA do a better job of emphasizing that the glitters aren’t eye safe. When I first got into make-up a few years ago I bought one of the Christmas glittler/pigment collections. I never got a warning from the MUA that the glitter wasn’t eye-safe and wore them on my eye not knowing any better. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Hopefully most consumers are smarter than I was when I was younger. lol.
I hear ya, Carrie. I wish it was somehow clearer about products that come with warnings 🙁
Did anything negative happen to your eyes? i use not eye safe/ not reccommended for eye area stuff on my eyes like, daily, and ive never once had an issue. i switched to daily wear contacts instead of monthly or “until they dont work anymore” lenses and i think that helps.. i keep my brushes VERY clean and i always use a primer and mixing medium to apply glitters so it lessens the possibility of it getting a lot of product in my eye. but ive yet to experience an actual problem directly related to the makeup being put in an area it isnt intended for. …
to each their own, maybe some people have a more sensitive eye area, tear ducts, proclivity for infections than i do. but imma keep on keepin on!
That burgundy pigment is almost identical to one (Spicy Smoke from the Smoky Berry set) that was released about two or three years ago in the Holiday collection where they had the pigment sets in half silver half clear plastic balls, I think it was the Glitter and Ice collection in 2011. Either way definitely a dupe!
Thanks for sharing, Carrie!
The pigment looks nice! The glitters though, meh, I don’t know what I’d use them for.
Totally understand 😉
The pigment is beautiful! The glitters are too, but I will never use them so I can skip. Thanks for the swatches.
Sure thing, Keri!
Though I know better than to trust MAC’s description, I was really hoping for a deeper burgundy tbh 🙁
🙁
It’s Not Easy Having a Good Time is pretty! It reminds me of Heritage Rouge pigment.
Definitely some similarity!
These look gorgeous. One thing that sucks is when products say don’t put in around eye area or contains ingredients that aren’t approved for eye area. Especially when it’s a product for the eyelid, or something, like glitter, that you would use on the eyelid.
Oh well, what can you do.
I have enough eye/vision problems that I’m no longer comfortable risking glitters like this on my eyes 🙁
I love the black! But, if you don’t wear it on your eyes, where do you put it?!
Nails, lips, hair, body!
i also like making shapes or little designs with mixing medium or eyelash glue (draw on the shape with a tiny tiny brush or even a toothpick, then gently pat the glitter over it) – I do this on my david bowie days when i can just do anything i want with my makeup. luckily im a bartender so this is…whenever i want. im ready to make some rockin snowflakes soon with the reflects colors (blue, transparent teal.. etc). it’s a cheeky look that is fun for a special occasion or a costume maybe. or a day job where it’s encouraged.
I only like the first one. The other two are just awful, to my taste. Seem like the type of glitter little kids use at school to decorate their little drawings.
The gold one is chunky, but I like the holographic glitter in the black!
Do you? How would you use it?
I wouldn’t, since these aren’t eye safe!
Beautiful swatches, as usual! 😉 It’s not easy having a good time it’s beautiful… is it similar to Heritage rouge?
Heritage Rouge is darker — less copper, more burgundy!
It’s Not Easy Having a Good Time is pretty!
It is!
I love It’s Not Easy Having A Good Time, I don’t like typing the name, though 🙂
I like working with pigments so I hope I can get this.
Haha! It is an epic name!
The pigment is lovely! Especially for warm toned green eyed people!
It would be nice with green eyes!
It’s Not Easy Having a Good Time Pigment is really gorgeous. The glitters are pretty, too. Too bad they’re not eye safe.
3D Black is very cool!
I think the black holographic glitter is pretty, but what sorta things would it be used for? I wanted to use it over eyeliner/a glitter glue base, to give it a glittery holographic look, but reading that it isn’t eye safe kinda makes me question using it for that (especially since eyeliner is so close to your eye, even more so than putting it on the lid, y’know?). I have black lipsticks, and a black lipgloss, that I suppose it could be added to, do you have any suggestions besides that? Overall though, I’m really excited about this collection!! RHPS was a favorite of mine growing up, I think it’s a really cute idea for a collection! (especially near Halloween)
You could use it on lips, hair, nails, etc.!
Not a fan of glitter eyeshadow – I think if I get that glitter stuff in my eye it would cause major hassles. However the pigments look lovely. Thanks for the review Christine.
No prob, Genevieve! I have the same problems with larger glitters!
When i went to a cheerleading competition the girls were using very chunky glitter on their eyelids – not from mac but if they can use ethose why cant we usethese for eyes?!! I will never buy these
Sometimes people use stuff that isn’t safe on the eyes, though there are some glitters you can use on the eyes safely!
i always use the not eye safe glitters on my eyes… it’s gotten easier since i switched to daily wear contacts (if i get some in my eye or on my lens i can just toss it). i apply it with mixing medium. usually ill use udpp first, then a paint (im down to my last 2 tubes of pixel i cant deal), then shadow (always applied wet).. then ill apply mixing medium with my finger and pat glitter on top of that, and seal the whole thing with fix plus. usually i have no problems with my eyes.
For me, I’m just not willing to risk it since you may not see the damage initially 🙂 Just my personal choice!
i totally see and respect where you’re coming from lady! 🙂 i never actually thought about cumulative side effects just immediate ones like infection or cornea scratches.
…
ill ask my eye dr. on my next appointment to take a look at a few of my not eye safe products and see what she says about possible major risks. you just raised a very good point for me there – i never think long term. 🙂
It’s always such a mixed story… I was told by one brand that the glitters are safe for eyes outside of the U.S., but they haven’t been tested in the U.S. and thus remain unsafe (the same story you hear about neons). It is so confusing!
How does this compare to Mac Cranberry? It looks pretty similar to me based on the swatch… but I so want this because of the packaging!!
Here you go! http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=176333&dupe=105307
I like that the gold one has those orange bits in it too – otherwise it would have been a bit, er, ‘meh’ as just a gold glitter! The black + iridescent one is interesting, although I confess that loose glitters haven’t quite made it into my makeup zone yet (surprisingly).
I love the effect of glitter, but they can a pain to work with!
I thought rhps went up on macs site today? Its not there! Help!
MAC said September 29th – that’s all the info I have – but they didn’t give a time, so they’re not late yet…
Will the collection be released at Macy’s?
This is a MAC store/site exclusive.
Hi Christine! Would you consider mac’s heritage rouge pigment a good dupe for it’s not easy having a good time?? I missed out on that since it sold out so quickly. I
Thanks!
They are similar!
not to butt in, but i found that mixing a little accent red with some gold mode, and a very VERY small bit of rush metal and an even smaller bit of acid orange. so like…. 6/10th accent red, 2/10th gold mode, 1/10th rush metal and 1/10 acid orange. ill post a pic somewhere it i can. it’s CLOSE. the texture is slightly different due to the rushmetal, but you could leave that out i suppose if you want less metal/gold.
oh ps, some of those mentioned colors arent eye-safe. but i made a pretty rockin dupe that ill be using on my eyes. ive never had a problem with makeup causing eye issues before. but some people are more sensitive.
