Kat Von D Gothica Studded Kiss Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Gothica Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Gothica Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “sparkling bronze.” It’s a medium-dark, coppery-brown with warm, reddish-orange undertones and a mix of gold and copper flecks of sparkle and shimmer. Revlon Sandstorm (LE, $7.99) is smoother, glossier. Maybelline Maple Kiss (925) (P, $7.49) has less shimmer. Milani Bronze Beauty (P, $5.49) is more metallic, shimmery. MAC Who’s That Chick (LE, $16.00) is brighter, more shimmery. MAC Sheer Seduction (LE, $16.00) is sheerer, more metallic, glossier. Maybelline Mochachino (P, $7.49) is less sparkly. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Authentic (P, $18.00) is more metallic, less sparkly. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The consistency has just enough give so that it doesn’t really tug/drag harshly at the lips, but it doesn’t glide on effortlessly–you do need a decent amount of pressure. The color goes on fairly evenly, though some of the sparkle seems to stick in places so the particles aren’t as evenly distributed as the actual underlying color is. It had mostly opaque color coverage, but it wasn’t as pigmented as some of the other shades I’ve reviewed previously. On me, the color lasts six and a half hours, shorter than the 10-hour wear-time that’s claimed and shorter than most of the ones I’ve tried. It is slightly drying but not nearly as drying as you might expect, given it’s clingier feel. This one is also noticeably textured, as you can feel a slight grittiness from the sparkle both as applied from the tube itself as well as when it wears down.

Oh, that doesn’t look good.
It had potential!
I have this lipstick and I love it. The colour is really unique and gorgeous. It also applies very smoothly and lasts really long.
Happy to hear it works so well on you, Tamika! I am jealous!
Noooo I wanted this to get an A! I love the idea of a sparking bronze lip that’s wearable!
If you add a little balm or gloss, it could be easier to wear!
Aarghh!
Being a teen in the 70s, I flee the look of any metallic but I really do want to buy a Bronze lipstick.
I am tip-toeing up to Milani Bronze Beauty. My skin coloring and blue eyes demand it.
You are so brave with lipsticks, well, with every makeup item. Have not yet seen a bad shade on your lips!! Thanks for the review.
I think after wearing colors like blue, green, gray, etc. there’s no color that intimidates me 😉 Besides, it always comes off!
Aw, too bad it didn’t impress 🙁
I wanted to love it so much!
WOW! So beautiful that I’m willing to work with it. I guess some of the products that get average “grades” would get better “grades” if they didn’t have such grande claims like 10 hour wear…
Yes, they definitely would! 10 hours is a pretty big claim, though some of them last almost that long.
I love the golden shimmer! It gives off the prettiest sheen
It is pretty!
Not liking this shade at all.
Your wallet is safe!
I have this one and I love it! Definitely not a low-maintenance color, but well worth the effort since it’s so unique compared to everything else in my collection. 🙂
Any tips for getting the most out of this shade, Brittany?
I honestly haven’t worn it for super long periods yet, so I actually shouldn’t judge on the lasting power. However, I’ve found that it looks great as long as I make sure to apply immediately after wiping away lip balm I’ve been wearing to prep, and it definitely doesn’t look as good if I’ve skipped exfoliating my lips. Otherwise, it looks smooth on me as long as my lips are well prepped.
Thank you so much for sharing, Brittany!!
I’m not a fan of the metallic ones like Milani’s Bronze Beauty and that’s the first bronze I liked and would like to try in forever!
I love the glossy sheen of Bronze Beauty!
Hm, ok, it looks better in the photos than i imagined from the description, and the shade is pretty on you…but who has time for a lipstick that’s gritty *and* harder to apply *and* kinda drying? :-S still, i’m so glad you reviewed it, because I was intrigued by the pictures of the shade!
The finish is more unique than not, so maybe if that’s what draws you in it could be worth the extra effort, but generally, not so much.
Amazing unique shade, probably because it’s matte it wears grittier?
Yes, I think because it is a thinner, matte finish that the sparkle sits on top more.
this looks gritty .
yikes !
You can feel the shimmer!
How weird..thought I would love this one on you, but I think it makes your lips look quite dry. Not trying to be a killjoy, just further evidence this line isn’t a good choice for me.
There’s something about matte metallics that are less flattering on lips!
It’s a shame. I can SEE the grittiness from the pics.
Yep! It’s there. Some people will be bothered by it, others won’t notice it, but it is there!
Holy 70’s.
Good or bad? LOL!
Am I weird for loving this for fall?
Nope!!
Love the color but it definitely looks gritty!
I wish it was more comfortable to wear!
I have this shade and it’s one of my favorites so far! Beautiful color and lasts a fairly long time and applied easily and smoothly for me.
Happy you’re enjoying yours, Roo!
I know this only got a “C”, but I really like this. It’s such a unique color! Putting it on the wish list!
It lost a fair amount of points because it didn’t wear for 10 hours (which is what is claimed), but it does wear awhile (longer than average) – so if that’s not a deal-breaker, it may be worth checking out if you love the color!
Hmm, like the colour but it looks dry and gritty. I love shimmery lipsticks but I’m not sure how comfortable it would be to wear.
It’s more comfortable than it looks, I’d say, but it isn’t the most comfortable lipstick to wear.
Such a pity to see the C rating, I do like this type of color tho, basic but with shimmer added in, creating a mysterious and fun feeling.
I wonder if you would plan for reviewing MUFE’s new shades of their Rouge Artist Natural, in which every of their names starts with Diamond. From Sephora’s swatch, I have a hunch that there might be several of them being similar to KVD. And with my experience with MUFE, I trust them delivering a better job.
I don’t have any of Make Up For Ever’s new shades at this time, sorry!
too big shimmer for a lipstick, I just like it when they have frost finished or more subtle to wear everydays,
I don’t mind the size (it’s a fun look), but I can see it being too much for some!
It’s pretty…
The grade of this shade plus the comparison to Sandstorm just makes me extra ticked I never found those Revlon lipsticks earlier this year…
I can’t believe that those were SO hard to track down.
The Meijer near me which is my go-to for drugstore LE items never had them, it was bizarre. This is a store that not only got the Milani Bella Blue display, but has restocked it!
I just can’t wear lipsticks with shimmer especially if they are matte! Not for me.
It’s a more unique finish, so I can see it not being everyone’s cup of tea!
Interesting, when I looked at the lipstick itself I thought it wouldn’t be a colour I’d like. But I do! I find it quite unique, I sure don’t have anything even remotely like it. I can just imagine this a sunny autumn day, Lovely!
I also don’t mind a bit of grittiness. I’ve had loads of lipglosses that’s been quite gritty, so that’s not a dealbreaker for me.
This one is going on the wan’t list, even though I have to order it from Sephora US. I think it’ll be worht it. Good thing it’s permanent, so I don’t have to order it immediately.
If you don’t mind the feel of sparkle, you should be okay!
Aw, I ordered this, and I imagine I will not appreciate the grittiness. But, we’ll see. I’m really feeling these orangey-brown types of shades for fall.
Fingers crossed you find it tolerable!
Glad you posted this! Gothica was one of the shades I planned to look at today. I bought Countess on Friday but just saw a sneak peek of the KVD mini lipsticks planned for this Christmas and see that Countess is a shade in that. So since it’s unworn I’m going to return it. I also have lovecraft and motorhead that will be in that set but know I’ll get enough use out of them to justify keeping the full size. But for a red (a very pretty red but a red nonetheless) I think a mini will suffice so I can justify more reds!
But now I think I’ll pass on gothica and pursue another shade
OOH! How fun. Look forward to the minis.
this looks so gritty 🙁
You can definitely feel the sparkle!
This shade reminds me of of several MAC shades with some variation: “O”, Fresh Morracan, Fetish,
I can see some resemblance!
It looks so beautiful, I think I’ll try it even with the grittiness of the glitter.
It just looks so unique and I think it will be quite pretty with my hair, I might have to buy this even with the no-no’s.
Let me know if you try it, Paula!
I have to say, when I tried this color on, I got amazing coverage and it didn’t tug too much. Just a little tugging and it wore strong for 6 hours, until I wiped it off. I wonder if there is consistency issues in their batches or something.
You’re so lucky!
Do you have any other stores that sell gothica in bakersfield ? Seems sephora is out and to check back in weeks. Please help dying to have it by sept 1st
Thank you
