Round-up: Tom Ford Lip Sheers Photos & Comparisons

Tom Ford Lip Color Sheers

Tom Ford Lip Color Sheers ($49.00 for 0.10 oz.) are available in eight limited edition shades. The formula is new (but limited edition!) for spring. Here’s a visual comparison of the eight shades together, and you’ll notice that the range leans quite warm-toned. Incorrigible (08) is the only shade that is cool-toned, and on some complexions, In the Buff (01) might lean pinker (less beige). The big takeaway from the reviews for these is that they are far more pigmented than the formula’s name or description let alone; if you were going to stay away because sheer lip color isn’t your thing, you might still want to check them out. If, on the other hand, you really wanted sheer color, you might want to look at the Lip Color Shines instead (or else use these very lightly!). You can read full reviews, get shade descriptions, dupes, ratings, and all that good stuff here: part one and part two.

You can find these online at Nordstrom (only has three shades left), Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, and Saks.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Intially when I first saw these in the promo pic you posted I was super excited but now that I see swatches my excitement has waned a bit. I do love the packaging though. It screams summer!!!

Tom Ford sure has a funny definition of “sheer”, but those rich, glossy, opaque colours are my favourites nonetheless. As with all his shades, though, it’s a question of whether or not it’s worth the money when a lot of the shades seem fairly easy to dupe at lower prices. I really feel that if the brand wants to grow, they have to start offering more shades (especially lipsticks) that have something truly unique to offer. Just my opinion. They still look beautiful.

Christine Avatar

He and Bobbi Brown seem to share the same idea of “sheer,” which is to say, not sheer at all. I wonder if it “semi-opaque” doesn’t sound very sexy?

But I agree that Tom Ford’s lip colors tend to be more dupable than not, which was how I felt about the Lip Color range when it initially launched.

Oh my gosh, they are all stunning-on you and still shots!! Haven’t tried TF lipsticks yet and I know this is always relative-but do you think they’re worth the price? 🙂

Christine Avatar

Thank you, Abigail!

Yes? and no? They’re probably not in my top 3 formulas. I find the range… boring? personally. The formulas are nice, but it either has to be the perfect shade for my skin tone or a little more unique to justify at this price. Some of these are really pretty, and I think I might pick up the more coral-y hues (like Summer Fling and Sweet Spot). I’d rather go Guerlain at this price point, or even Cle de Peau (which pushes higher), and then there’s Givenchy Le Rouge, which is $10+ cheaper, and Buxom Full-Bodied — all ranges that I really love.

That being said, I loved Tom Ford’s Rouge Fatal from holiday, and that might be one of my all-time favorite TF colors I’ve tried.

Ahhh, you are soooo good! Thank you, thank you, especially for already answering my would-have been follow-up questions! 🙂 I think I’ll take a shot on Guerlain then Tom Ford.

I’m not terribly familiar with this brand, but do you know how often they bring back shades, if ever? Maybe I can put this on my wishlist/lipwear to look out for or spend 98.573% of my free time trying to find a dupe. 😉

Michelle Reece Avatar

Thanks for your reply! I suppose the best I can hope is that the shade resurfaces somewhere in another brand Estee Lauder owns. You’d think they wouldn’t discontinue nudes/neutrals for long.

Firecracker and Incorrigible are gorgeous but definitely dupeable. The rest are far too warm for me. Pretty colors but an easy pass for me. 🙂

I love your round up posts! I remember when you used to do them after every MAC collection, before people complained that it made the blog too MAC heavy. I’m sure these posts take a bit of extra time and effort, but I really appreciate them! It’s nice to get a kind of final word on the product/collection, and a breakdown of what’s warmer, cooler, sheerer or more opaque.

Hi Christine,

These are gorgeous. I’m so grateful you always do lip swatches and not just skin swatches. Are there pics with your headshot in these shades too, or am I missing them?

BTW, I noticed that you’ve put Pink Dusk in the actual square photo, but in the descriptions (sheerest, least dupable, etc) is typed Pink Dune.

Christine Avatar

Hi Lori,

You need to go to the actual reviews to view all of the photos (both parts are linked in the post above) – e.g. skin swatches, product photos, ratings, etc. This is just a recap of the original, in-depth posts 🙂

Thanks! Will fix the error.

Diane Avatar

Seriously you are the best lip model ever!
Will any brand ever make a cool toned ‘nude’ peachy lipstick? And not those mauves that make your teeth bright yellow. Sigh…

Erin Avatar

Being neutral to cool toned, I agree that the only ones that would work for me without swatching would be 01 and 08. 03, 04, and 07 would need to be swatched cause they might work. I love Sweet Spot, but out of all of them it’s the warmest to my eye! Sometimes I get lucky and a warm lipstick will become kinda neutral based on my lip shade, making it great to wear! I feel that I wouldn’t get so lucky with that one though.

🙁 these haven’t even launched in australia!

btw Hi! I’ve been on temptalia for awhile but never joined or said hi! I have to say thank you christine for all the swatches and reviews as Australia’s always a season behind collections so I rely on temptalia to buy from the U.S and get them shipped here instead!
