Marc Jacobs Beauty Gossip (140) Lovemarc Matte Lip Gel Review, Photos, Swatches
Marc Jacobs Beauty Gossip (140) Lovemarc Matte Lip Gel
Marc Jacobs Beauty Gossip (140) Lovemarc Matte Lip Gel ($30.00 for 0.13 oz.) is described as a “matte hot fuchsia.” It’s a brightened, fuchsia pink with a satin finish. Chanel La Diva (44) (P, $34.00) is slightly brighter. Ardency Inn Twist (P, $25.00) is darker, brighter. MAC Dear Diary (LE, $18.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Embrace Me (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Daddy’s Little Girl (LE, $16.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.
Because I’m a glutton for punishment, I bought this shade despite my lackluster experience with three of the other shades in the range. The problem isn’t applying it, not the color itself, or even the pigmentation; it’s the wear, and the way it wears away and leaves a ring of color along the outer edge of lips while settling into lip lines. I don’t have to do anything but sit at my desk, typing away, and it gravitates into every crevice on my lips. The texture is velvety and glides on without tugging or dragging, and it doesn’t feel like a matte lipstick at all. It’s a formula that will be less forgiving on drier lips, as it catches and emphasizes those types of imperfections. The finish is more semi-matte (Marc Jacobs Beauty says it is “demi-matte”), as there is still a sheen to the color for at least an hour into wear. It had mostly opaque color coverage, which was probably its best attribute. It wears five hours on me, but it wears quite unevenly over time. It was vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste.

That is gorgeous!
It is a nice color!
I have to ask. Is that amazing glow because of the Celestial highlighter or the ambient lighting powder?
Probably a combination of both 🙂
Fuchsia Flash from Maybelline is similar?
Fuchsia Flash is brighter, darker, and glossy!
What about MAC Candy Yum Yum?
Candy Yum Yum is extremely neon – so it’s a lot brighter and cooler-toned!
I do not like this line…which is a shame because I generally love Marc Jacobs’ other products. I’m a glutton for punishment too, I suppose, and bought that one extra lipstick too much (though I stopped at 2) and had the same wear problem…original formula. And I don’t like the one eye shadow palette I bought either. I so appreciate your honest reviews…you’ve saved me from many other bad purchases (wish I’d read more of your MJ reviews before shelling out the big bucks). Others might love the line, I’m so very not one of them!
Which eyeshadow palette did you get?
The Starlett (7 shadows, right?). I thought it was way too metallic. I have warm to neutral undertones and was shocked at how cool toned the colors looked on me since the undertones (with gold and copper in the palette) seemed like they’d be warmer. The “white” turned a blue silver which is pretty but not the best on me. The quality is good but I just didn’t like the metallic finish and the colors on me. We all like different things….
Gotcha – I liked that palette, but if you don’t like frost/metallic then it will definitely be metallic overload! 🙂 I haven’t tried them all, so I thought maybe one of the palettes was a big dud (in terms of quality).
No. I thought the (so similar colors) palette in the Sephora set was gorgeous…and much warmer toned/less metallic. That also had a gold, white and black/grey. I just didn’t like the items I got from the line so moved on to other lines…
Sephora holiday set…I meant….
It’s such a shame when an expensive product with beautiful color and great packaging just doesn’t deliver quality-wise.
Yeah, at this price point, it’s tough to swallow!
Ugh, too bad about the wear. It’s a good color. I keep trying to come up with a hot/pink fuschia that pulls red or warm instead of cool, as I don’t really like blue-toned pinks on me. Anyone have any ideas? I saw this awesomely warm hot pink lipstick with a really faint rosy blush on Natalie Portman, and now I can’t get the look out of my head!
Here are some warmer pinks – http://www.temptalia.com/swatch-gallery?color=Fuchsia,Pink&undertone=Warm&type=12690
MAC Impassioned might be a good bet! Or if you want something a little cooler, Maybelline Vivid Rose is a beautiful reddish fuchsia.
Milani Color Statement in Hot Pink Rage – it’s $5.50, super pigmented and lasts for hours. I’ve seen swatches where it pulls quite cool but it’s actually a pretty neutral shade. I like it!
This is insanely gorgeous!
If only it performed better! 🙁
Oh, now that’s pretty! And I like the finish.
I like the finish, too!
It’s a really pretty color, it’s too bad they settle into lines so bad.
I know, right? So sad.
It’s a shame about the wear, cos the colour is stunning on you 🙂
It looks so soft and pretty – why does it have to be evil and migrate around? (pet peeve!)
And with a bold shade like this, SO obvious!
The pigmentation of this lipstick is great and I love how bright it is! This would be a great lipstick for the spring months to liven up your makeup a little 😀
This type of color is nice for spring!
Christine, I really like the finish of this formula (same with the other shades you reviewed, so I assume it is the demi-matte I am liking) but these don’t seem to be stellar lipsticks. Could you recommend a product with a similar finish?
You could try MAC’s Amplified range!
Awww..bummer 🙁 The shade itself is so pretty!
It is! Thankfully there are dupes!
The color is beautiful but I hate lipsticks that wear like that! It starts to look gross after a while
Me too! Especially bolder shades, it’s so apparent.
The color looks so good! Thank you for the review, saved me some money (or at least aggravation). The way you discuss the lipstick wear is like everything I could really hate about lipstick put together >_<
LOL! So glad I could save you some money this time around 🙂
This colour is absolutely stunning – looks perfect for the summer! Too bad the application is kinda off though!
It was really disappointing!
It’s a nice color, but I live La Diva much better. It pops more. How are his lip glosses. I don’t want to get one if the quality is subpar. Thanks!
The ones I have tried, I have liked!
This is such a gorgeous color, but I would hate for it to wear off so fast! I’ll have to skip this one ):
Great review!
Thanks, Laura!
Ah I love this colour. Reminds me of a Clarins lipstick I had years ago.
Hopefully better in quality 😉
