Marc Jacobs Beauty Showstopper (134) Lovemarc Lip Gel ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “classic red.” It’s a medium-dark, warmer red with brown-ish undertone and a glossy shine. It’s a warmer red that doesn’t go orange, as the warmth is coming from a brown undertone. Givenchy Grenat Initie (307) (P, $36.00) is darker, less brown. NARS Golshan (P, $25.00) is more matte, lighter. NARS Majella (P, $25.00) is similar but more matte. Milani Cherry Crave (P, $5.49) is metallic. MAC Viva Glam I (P, $15.00) is more matte. Buxom Provocateur (P, $21.00) is brighter, less brown. See comparison swatches.

This is a new shade for the holidays, and it’s specially packaged in a shimmering, ruby red case. The case is plastic, but it had a lot of depth–it definitely caught my eye. If it had a little more heft, I could see it looking and feeling quite luxe. Showstopper is incredibly glossy; it seemed glossier than other shades in the range even. The color was richly pigmented and applied with opaque color coverage in a single stroke. The consistency was lightweight, emollient, and gel-like–it glides on like butter, as if the color was just melting onto the lips, but I didn’t experience any feathering or bleeding with this shade. It wore well for five and a half hours and left behind a residual reddish stain. The formula was nicely hydrating while worn.

Gotta say Christine, you can really rock the red lipstick. I love these lippies. I’ve got two now and find myself reaching for them more and more. I wish I could do red, but just no. I am a fair skinned red head and I think I look like a clown in red lipstick. I’m so burnt out on the whole “there’s a red for everyone” thing. IMHO, no there is not. I just don’t think everyone can pull if off. But your coloring is just perfect for it!

Nooo! I’m rather fair-skinned and I’ve definitely found reds for me. I had a friend tell me the same thing. She’s really really pale with blonde hair but we definitely found a red for her too. Don’t give up! Red is definitely for everyone.

I just bought this, got it home, and realized some kind shopper had used it (testers, people – it’s what they’re there for!). I was going to go back and exchange it, but then I tried the Lolita eyeshadow palette I’d also bought from this range and was pretty underwhelmed for the price point. Now I’m looking at my beloved Grenat Initie and thinking maybe I just don’t really need this one.
