5 Must-Have Burgundy Lipsticks

Reader Rashmi requested a top five of burgundy lipsticks, and I have to say, finding a really lovely burgundy lip color that’s permanent is difficult. It seems to be a favorite hue to go-to for limited edition collections, though.

  1. OCC Black Dahlia — is a deep, dark burgundy with a hint of brown that lasts and lasts
  2. MAC Endless Drama — a deepened, semi-opaque burgundy red with a soft, frosted finish
  3. Giorgio Armani #408 — is a muted, reddish burgundy with a pearly shimmer
  4. Buxom Menace — a brightened, berry-ish burgundy with a shimmery finish
  5. Laura Mercier Merlot — a lightened, muted berry-burgundy with a natural finish

What’s your favorite burgundy lipstick?

Completely agree with Buxom Menace. It has become my HG fall/winter lippie!! I love the formula and the color works great with my skintone. Thanks so much for your blog. I started following it last year after I had surgery and I have purchased so many of your recommendations!!!

Like a TRUE burgundy to me is a brown-ish red that’s not so brown that it turns maroon… but like any color that’s not “blue” there’s a spectrum – definitely some of the shades here aren’t, perhaps, burgundy in the truest sense of the word! 🙂

I absolutely love OCC Black Dahlia! I saw it on a MUA a few shades darker than me and it looked flawless on her so I thought why not take the plunge and try it myself. This NC45 is glad she stepped outside her comfort zone. If you layer it on top of a black matte lippie it shows up much darker.

I own occ’s black dahlia and found it to be one of the most difficult lip products I’ve owned so far. I’m familiar with the formula, but this gorgeous shade is so handful. It moves around, bleeds and stains everything. It is NOT long lasting on me. No matter how careful I am with the application, the results are the same. I hate having people pointing out at my burgundy teeth… Works great as a cheek stain though.

I have far too many “favorite” burgundy lippies to even begin listing them, LOL! That’s like asking a mom to name her favorite child, as I just love a nice, vampy lip… That said, I think Revlon & L’Oréal do the best job when it comes to formula; I never experience migration, staying power is good, and I’ve never experienced any patchiness.

One that comes to mind immediately is Lancôme Jezebel. As far as “burgundies” go, I think this os one that would be the most universal, as it doesn’t lean too red/brown/purple, and it isn’t too dark, nor too light. The finish is also interesting; it’s not too shimmery, and it’s not a “true” metallic, but there is definitely a hint of both. NYX Rapture is is similar, but I’m not sure if it’s still around… Another favorite is Revlon Black Cherry, which os said to be a dupe for MAC Rebel.

The list is really nice. I think I´m going to try some of the lipsticks because although I have tried a few burgundy lipsticks, I still haven´t found the right shade for me because I´m super pale.

I’m very fair myself, and I actually love the way vampy lipstick looks on me. It’s definitely a bit of a traffic stopper – I like it best with a simple flick of black eyeliner and a touch of blush! :3

I like that Laura Mercier lipstick! I’m also fair, so I’m hesitant to wear dark lipsticks – I feel like people will just see LIPS! – but I have a few and I love the color (matte burgundy, whoo hoo – child of the 90s forever!)

Let me tell you, those OCC Lip Tars do last and last – I was swatching a few during the VIB Sale and I swear those swatches stained my hand until the next day, and I wash my hands a lot. I bought Vintage, but I’m a little bit afraid of it now!

My all time favorite dark burgundy (berry-ish) shade is Burberry Oxblood. Formula is moisturizing, long lasting, and extremely flattering. It’s also easily blotted down to a matte finish. It’s pricey, but worth it to me, since I feel like it’s the only one I need.

Love me some burgundy! Completely agree with you on Armani #408. They actually do deep colours really well and I’d love to see them add more to the permanent collection.

Other burgundies in frequent rotation for me…

Guerlain- Vega
LMdB- Madaket (might be a little cool to be called a true burgundy)
Armani Maestro 201- Dark Velvet

I loved Mac Charred Red before they discontinued it…

The only burgundy lipstick I own is Rimmel Kate 107 and I actually really like it. I didn’t expect a color like that to look good on my pale, warm-toned skin, but it does! I think it’s a color that probably looks good on everyone. It’s true that the texture of the line is a bit different from regular lipstick, but I actually don’t mind it, especially for the price.

Thanks for this list (and the request made!). I’m realizing I don’t have a *real burgundy in my stash – ouch, so on to my wishlist! Thanks Christine and Rashmi!

I’ve been waiting for this post! My favorites are Wet n Wild Cherry Bomb and Nars Volga and Kat Von D Rosary! I’ll have to check out the OCC one, looks great on you!

I picked up Black Metal Dahlia, my very first OCC Lip Tar, about a month ago. I adore the color so very much, but can’t seem to keep it from feathering just outside my lips…wondering if I am applying it wrong or if I need a lip pencil. Any suggestions? I put it on over OCC Clear lip tar and use the mini brush that came with each to apply.

Today I had an appointment at MAC because a photographer friend had her holiday party tonight and took portraits of all the guests, so I wanted someone else to do my makeup for the occasion. I asked for a plummy burgundy shade and got Viva Glam III, which I absolutely adored and purchased. The lip pencil in Burgundy and the holiday collection nude eye bag rounded out my purchases.

I’m glad I loved Viva Glam III…I’d originally planned to request Endless Drama but it isn’t on the MAC website anymore, making me wonder if it’s been discontinued.

I must be the only beauty lover who hasn’t tried an OCC Lip Tar (since they’ve become widely available at Sephora and all), but I’ve been eyeing Black Dahlia for years. The only thing that’s stopped me snagging it is whether I’d have the guts to wear it anywhere!
