Urban Decay Whiskey/Zero 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

Can’t Decide Between Brown and Black?

Urban Decay Whiskey/Zero 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil ($12.00 for 0.02 oz.) is described as a “rich brown” and “zealous black.” It costs less than a full-sized eyeliner ($19), because it’s half the size–but you do get to try two shades. Unfortunately, Whiskey is not available individually, though Zero is, in case that’s the side you would use most often!

Whiskey is a medium-dark brown with warm, orange undertones and a faint sheen. It has good color payoff in a snigle pass, and it’s a nice alternative to black, because it’s lighter and brighter. Urban Decay Bourbon has bronze sparkle and has less orange undertones. MAC Brownborder is darker.

Zero is a soft black. The pigmentation in one pass is decent but I recommend going back and forth at least once to get truly opaque color. MAC Engraved and MAC Graphblack are similar. Urban Decay Perversion is much darker.

I’m a fan of the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil formula, because it’s long-wearing, pigmented, creamy, and easy to apply.  It was my very favorite formula for several years!  I still reach for shades from the range often.  Both shades wear just around eight hours on the lower lash line for me, with no fading or smudging.  Whiskey is creamier and more pigmented than Zero, which feels a smidgen dry in comparison, though I would not go so far as to describe it as such.

Depending on your eyeliner needs, this might be a great travel item or staple. In the long run, if you use a lot of black, it's not the most ideal way to purchase, since you're paying more than if you bought a full-sized black eyeliner.

  1. I’m surprised that they haven’t made Whiskey permanent yet–SO many people seem to love it! I have yet to try the UD 24/7 liners (I’m a MUFE girl), but I just may purchase this one. I’ve been curious about both shades, so this would be a good buy for me

  2. I always use black. Always. So I wouldn’t get much use of this duo pencil. It could be interesting to add to my professional kit, though.

I have this from the original Naked palette. Whiskey is too red toned for my liking and both pencils smear like nobody’s business on me. I don’t understand how they can be “24/7″ – with or without primer, set with a powder shadow or setting powder or not, they smear and fade.

  4. I love Whiskey and if this came with Perversion it would have been a no brainer to get. I was never a fan of Zero and only used the Whiskey side in the Naked palette. ;)

  5. I like the concept and I eyeballed this baby on Sephora. The brown is a little too orangey for me to be considered as a ‘staple’. If this were to be a travel item, pair the black with a darker brown and I would be game.

I have started to really love the look of a lined waterline both on top (to really fill out the lashes) and bottom (usually just in the outer corner), but don’t currently have any nice long wearing liners. Would you recommend this for waterline or a different formula instead? I wear contacts and all the liners I have tend to gum them up! I will probably use Whisky since I’m a redhead, but Zero could definitely be put to good use at night. Thanks do much for all your hard work! Thanks to you I don’t waste time and money on disappointing products!

    • The 24/7 range doesn’t last super long on the waterline for me. I don’t have contacts, so I’m not sure about that, but given that they don’t last all day, I imagine what wears off is going into the eyeball :(

If anyone is looking for a cheaper alternative, the Milani Liquif’eye eyeliners are really awesome. I discovered those after I ran out of the Urban Decay ones when it came with my Naked palette. :D

  8. I have this from the Naked Palette and both ends have been worn to a stump! I managed to score a full-size Zero and travel-size Whiskey in a set though, so I wouldn’t need this. For those who haven’t tried the formula however, it’s a great place to start!

  9. I got this with my original UD Naked palette and it’s one of my favourite products for taking with me when I’m travelling because this way I get to bring a black and a brown pencil without taking up too much space. Great idea those dual-ended pencils, especially with great colours like Whiskey and Zero.

I’m kind of hating the clear plastic caps. Reminds me of WnW.

Meh, I had this from the original Naked palette and while I did use it at first, it snapped when I dropped it on the floor (only from a sitting position, so about three feet) and then I had two stubs and the silver bit in the middle, making them so short that they were difficult to use and even harder to sharpen. I threw them away eventually.

So, in short, if you’re planning on buying this, treat it with care!

I really like the idea of a dual ended pencil at this pricepoint from Urban Decay. However, I have to pass because the brown is too reddish for me. My skintone is cool with a lot of pink undertone and whenever I would wear a red based brown eyeliner I would get too many “Oh you look so tired today” or “What’s going on with your eyes?” comments!

If this came with Perversion instead of Zero I’d be more into it, but I don’t think Zero is quite dark enough :)

  14. Q

I was just wondering, how does Whiskey compare to UD’s Demolition? Is Demolition darker?

  15. Zero is really an average black pencil when there’s a lot of great ones out there! If it was Perversion I could have bought this double pencil!

I actually like Whiskey. (Zero, not so much.) I also have this from the Naked Palette.

And yeah, why hasn’t UD made it permanent already?! :(

    • Danielle

I really wish they would make Whiskey permanent. I e-mailed the company twice (once last year and again this year) and all they said is that they would forward my e-mail to the product department.

P.S. Hi Christine! How does Whiskey compare to MAC’s costa riche? Also, what happened to the newsletter you used to send out? Thanks!

  17. Erin S

I really wish they would make a Perversion/Demolition duo. I have Zero and it does nothing for me, and I want a darker brown than Whiskey. Gah. I’d scoop up a Perversion/Demolition duo in a heartbeat!

  18. Nikki

OMG! I have been wanting to try BOTH of these shades but I didn’t want Zero for so much, and I definitely didn’t want to buy a set just for these two shades knowing the other pencils wouldn’t get used! This is perfect for me, as I only wear black and brown liner, and the price is excellent! Thanks for sharing this info Christine! :-)
