MAC Year of the Snake Collection
MAC Year of the Snake Collection

MAC Year of the Snake Collection for Spring 2013

The Snake- inspired collection is defined by a palette of vibrant shades and shimmering finishes. Beauty Powder illuminates the skin, Eye Shadow creates striking contrasts and Pigments intensify the effect. Zoom Lash adds definition and Powerpoint Eye Pencil defines a razor-sharp line. Lipsticks quiver with lustre and M•A•C’s EXCLUSIVE packaging slithers with chic- featuring Beauty Powder, Lipsticks and Eye Shadows embossed with a gorgeous snake design. LIMITED EDITION (with design/packaging).

Editor’s Note: These shades are repromotes/permanent shades. We have reviewed the majority previously, so to see a review, click the shade name. The collection features embossed snake patterns/designs, plus special box packaging (and the eyeshadows are large-sized), so quality may differ.

  1. crystallinity

loving the aesthetic here! hope the formulations don’t suck!

  2. Lucy

It’s online now for UK :)

  3. Rachel

This just seems like such a lazy collection.

    • JillianPS

Agreed! Far too many items that are permanent… It feels like MAC’s just giving up. Although one could make an argument that this happened a while ago…

    • kp

Even in Archie there are a good amount of repromotes.

  4. Megan

I wish MAC would improve their images of products. It’s so obvious that they’re just using a stock image and changing the colour electronically! I suppose most companies do that, but it’s only MAC that I notice it with.

    • queenielizzie

I KNOW! This really bugs me, when I can see that an image has clearly been altered! How can I trust that the color is an accurate representation?

  5. Cecilia

the embossing is pretty cute. Looking forward to restocking my stash with Shell Pearl. Loved this from the Liberty London collection — been afraid of running out lol.

  6. There is something about the embossing on the lipsticks that creeps me out.

  7. Elysia

oooo I love the models make-up in the promo! I have been buying less and less MAC eyeshadows the past few years, since their quality is going down, but this looks intriguing!

  8. LL

Not impressed. It’s looks like everything I already have.

  9. Hazel

Ummm. I detest snakes. I can’t even fathom why I would want this reminder in my house, far less on my face.

  10. Belle

The packaging is still the same. Boo :(

  11. Jennifer

It’s been a long time since I’ve been inspired by a new MAC launch, due to poor product quality, inconsistency in formulas, a quantity-over-quality mentality, the increase in price coinciding with a decrease in the amount and (yes, again) quality, pushy salespeople, and generally poorly thought through themes for new collections.

That said, I think that the main promotional image is absolutely stunning. It’s a pity that the entire collection consists of repromotes and permanent products.

  12. Yellowlantern

I love the promo image. Boo to this being mostly just perm stuff though.

  13. Emma

I said the Archie something collection looked cheap and not very interesting.. Now THAT collection looks A LOT better. I will definitely have a look at the lipsticks becuse I think the design is something completely new and although I try not to let myself trick into buying something by pretty packaging or design, but this is tempting… And honestly… the Beauty Powder looks amazing.

  14. Lisa

Awesome! Love the packaging! Im 24 this march, which means i’m a snake :)

  15. Kira

    My year :)

Is it a typo or are the eyeshadows actually cheaper in Canada this time? 😮

  16. CC

I want the lipsticks because I love the designs! I will have it! 😀

  17. katie

I have wanted plumful for awhile so might get it in this collection if it doesn’t sell out so quickly. I wish they had changed the packaging though.

  18. kp

I’m SO OVER them repromoting stuff!

  19. Nhi

I think the design on the lipsticks are gorgeous and fun!

  20. abigailOD

I agree! That is a stunning photo of a promo! How do the beauty powders compare to the Extra Dimension Skinfinishes? Are they as frosty?

    • Lauren

No- not frosty- it’s more of a glow. I use Shell Pearl as a peachy/pink highlighting blush because it packs enough colour for my NW20 skin tone. It adds a very healthy glow- kind of like Dior Amber Glow…

  21. I was so intrigued when I saw the promo for this collection, but what a disappointment that it’s almost all the same as the permanent line, but with a jacked up price. And there isn’t even special packaging as far as I can tell, just an imprint on the product itself. I mean, it’s cool, but it’s not going to look so great once you start actually using the product. I wish they had incorporated the design from the box packaging into the actual product.

  22. cel

This is the best promo photo ever, so it doesn’t make sense that they’re all repromotes :( well it kinda does, but I think it’s a waste

  23. Lizzi

I’ve love the pics Chen Men has taken for MAC collections!

  24. Jade

I love snakes (yes I’m weird, I think they’re amazing) so I think this collection looks REALLY cool!

  25. Kimberly

I’m only interested in the products b/c the imprint.. well, I’m a snake and it’s my year. 😛

  26. I’m a dog (ha ha), but I love. the. packaging. They need to do this for the next 11 years (and maybe the cat too!).

  27. This collection seems like the perfect excuse to pick up Plumful lipstick with the cool side embossing!

    • Deb

Totally on the same page! That was actually the first thought that popped into my head when I saw that Plumful was one of the lipsticks. This one has been on my ‘to-get’ list for ages!

  28. Megan

Not one original color? Kind of lame! MAC needs to focus on killer collections with quality, not a quantity of collections.

  29. Amanda

I want the Altered Slate color. Gorg!

  30. linda

chen man’s photography is so distinctive and stunning!

  31. JQ

I like the packaging on the box, but since I’m not going to hang on to a piece of cardboard, this can’t be considered a great selling point. It’s too bad. The beautiful use of color in the promo pics would lead one to expect more inspiring products.

  32. lm

love the pic- face totally reminds me of heath ledger
wonder if it’s what matilda will look like in 20 years

  33. L

I don’t think I will picking up anything from this collection, but the promo photo is amazing!

  34. Jollie

I love the makeup on the model. She looks so exotic, but I think I will pass on this.

  35. Lauren

I just hit pan on my Shell Pearl beauty powder from Liberty of London!!! I use it as a glowing blush!!! Looks fantastic on! I skipped the last time it was repromoted because I hadn’t hit pan yet. Glad I waited!

  36. Emma Lynn

    on uk website now xx

  37. ada

I love that face picture, it’s gorgeous. I don’t really need anything but I love the theme. My dad was born in the year of the snake.

  38. Samantha P

    The picture made the collection look better than it really is .. :{

  39. ra

    Promo picture is amazing!

  40. I love this so much. The snake embossing is just beautiful, nd the packaging is stunning. If I had the cash I would be buying SO much of this… and with colours like Carbon eyeshadow, we can all use that, right? So having large shadow in pure black is actually useful rather than a gimmicky colour you may only use occasionally AND Once Upon a Time looks like a great highlight shade. Add to that three wearable lipsticks and a great looking beauty powder and you have a killer collection!

I wish I got the mailers from MAC because this would make an awesome piece of wall art too… (I have no idea how to get physical mailers in the UK. I get emails, but no postcards)

  41. Aryn

The promo pic is absolutely eye popping , as well as the Lipstick carvings … BUT … I’m kind of upset that everything in this collection is a Repromote or permanent “/ just when I thought Mac was back on top .

  42. The promo picture is stunning. It’s disappointing that it’ll be sold exclusively online. I’d love to see it in person.

  43. Deb

I don’t mind at all that these colours are repromotes. I’m happy to be able to get colours I missed and the embossing is beautiful. Really, MAC just can’t win. Why shouldn’t they repromote an item like Shell Pearl that people loved?

  44. Marie

LADIES!!!!! For those of you that don’t have Push the Edge pigment, I HIGHLY advise that you grab one. It is, by FAR, the most gorgeous purple eyeshadow/eyeliner I’ve ever had. Very easy to blend and very little fall out….I believe this is the THIRD time it’s been released; so it must be popular. I wonder why MAC doesn’t just make it permanent?

  45. boops

I have the old UD-AC/DC which looks almost the same as Altered State. Opinions anyone that may have AC/DC or remember it?

okay… ordered the Push The Edge piggy and the Beauty powder. Hope they’re nice!

  47. Honey

Does the Shell pearl works for nw45/nc50 complexion? or is it a pass?

  48. paigest

Christine do you know what product is used by the eyes that appears so yellow?

  49. Lisa

How does shell pearl compare to benefit – sugarbomb?

  50. Leizel

Shame this is only available online. What is the return policy for online purchases, anyone?

  51. Missy

Out of this collection I’m excited for the relaunch of the Shell Pearl Beauty Powder, but I agree with other comments about the collection seeming a bit “lazy” and too many of the products already being permanents in MAC’s line, there’s nothing that’s really special about it.

  52. Precious

    Late post but here goes…

This collection’s available at my local MAC counter. Weird. Wasn’t it supposed to be exclusive online?
