A Berry-Red by Rimmel London/Kate Moss

Rimmel #107 Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss ($5.49 for 0.14 oz.) is a deep berry-red with cool undertones and a modern matte finish. Guerlain Orgueil has shimmer. MAC Hang Up is darker. MAC What Joy! is a touch more berry-colored. Guerlain Gigolo is a smidgen darker.

The lipstick is incredibly pigmented; you really don’t need more than a swipe to yield opaque color payoff, and the color itself will stain lips quickly. The texture is somewhat creamy, and the overall thickness was a bit heavy. It had this odd, almost grainy, texture that made it hard for me to reconcile the great color payoff with. I noticed that as the color faded, it did have a tendency to leave a ring of color (where it fades from the center and the outer edges of the lips are last to go). This doesn’t usually happen to me, but Lipglossiping also had the same fading issue. Though the color itself wore for five hours well, and then after six and a half, there was noticeable color missing from the center area of the lips.

The color itself is rich and should flatter many skin tones, because of its deep color and slightly undertones. The whole time I wore it, I wanted to love it, but there’s just something about the way it sits on the lips that feels a little heavy, slightly grainy, and not-quite-right. Even writing this review, I’m sad, because this is such a chic berry shade. It was lightly drying (not the most drying matte formula I’ve tried by a long shot), had a fruity scent, and comes in a matte red tube. It even contains 0.14 oz., which is on the larger end of the spectrum for lipsticks. I bought mine at Walgreens about two weeks ago, but I haven’t spotted them online.

Christine, I’m on my Blackberry right now, and something has changed about your pictures: they have all a sort of greyish cast and you see links to “share it on Facebook” “Pinterest” and “Twitter” on top of the pictures. I always saw the pics loading normally before (as it is on a computer). I was not sure whether you already knew that, but I wanted to give you the heads up in case you didn’t.

Terri Avatar

Yes, same here. If I hover over the picture it greys out and all the links to pinterest, facebook, twitter come up. Extremely distracting and annoying and it takes away from your beautiful pictures that we all enjoy so much. If you hover to the left or right of the picture, nothing happens. Just chiming in here.

I had a similar experience with this in #109, which is a nice slightly muted orange coral color. However lightly dabbing it so it mimics a stain made me love the color and lasted a long time since I really worked it in (it shifted to a pinker color since it was sheerer and looked great). Overall I think this line a great option for people on a budget who want a matte lipstick, but don’t have any illusions like expecting $30 quality in a $5 lipstick, though wouldn’t that be nice?

Oh same. I’ve had much better luck with other brands/finishes than mattes. The Revlon ones vary. My favorite Strawberry Suede is a great matte, but it’s long discontinued.

I have to agree with you. I got the nude shade in a subscription beutybox called livbox. The nude color shade was perfect for me and the first time I found a nude shade that does not drain my face. But… There was just something off while wearing it. And I cannot say what it was and I so wanted to like it and be able to wear it 🙁

I’ve got this lipstick (stocked up at Boots when make up was on offer 3 for 2) , I’ve experienced the ring of colour, it wore out from the 4 hour mark for me and it felt a bit grainy on me too. Great colour pay off though and the price is reasonable for an everyday lipstick!

hey Christine, I always read your posts as well as the “What makeup are you wearing?” cause I enjoy knowing the products you used.. Anyways, I realized if am not mistaken you have “On lips: Guerlain Rendez-vous Shine Automatique Lipstick.” instead of Rimmel #107 Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss which is whats reviewed and I assume your wearing on your lips… Awesome reviews tho

A good dupe for this is Barry M’s no 162 Cranberry Red, in the Ultra Moisturising line (pink packaging). It’s opaque and very comfortable, an cheap too 🙂 Hope this helps!

I feel the same way with Rimmel’s lipsticks that are in the purple packaging, which I also think is the same formula as the original Kate Moss lipsticks…bleh..nice color, weird scent, and weird texture that just doesn’t “sit” right.

Amy Avatar

Oops >< I meant the black tube with the royal stamp thing and slanted cap, not purple. I had a brain fart xD I own Pink Blush… It just feels so odd? Like too emollient maybe?

artemis Avatar

i have that one too-hate the texture..ya, at the same time too greasy but also drying x_x

and the purple ones are drying too, i guess, even if they are lighter(mostly same ingredients+same drying ingredient)

too bad cause the colors are nice. rimmel has no res

I purchased a bunch of these from the new collection and I agree that the formula is quite disappointing. The way it wears and how it feels is just off. It has good color payoff, but isn’t rich or creamy, and I certainly didn’t find it long lasting. Every time I wear these I get that ring on the inside of my lips, which I hate. I feel like I wasted my money because even though the colors were fantastic, the formula was poor.

I don’t mind it feeling a bit heavy – I have a lighter colour from this line – I just put some vaseline on my lips to keep it moisturized and then I put it on. I like that it completely covers my lips without my having to put on a base to even out the slight pigment on my top lip.

The matte ones have a new smell that’s worth checking out, especially if you hate the original smell. I can hardly bear to open the originals, but I LOVE this new scent.

I might be in the minority on this board, but I’m with the girls in the UK. I love them. They never wear off in the center of my lips or dry them out.

GK Avatar

I really hoped this would be as good as the 1st collection of Kate lipsticks in the black tube. The texture isn’t as good & the smell is completely different. Not fruity like the original, but a stale waxy smell. I thought I got a bad tube, but that’s the new aroma, made me gag!

I love this color! I wear to work almost everyday and I love the wear.. I don’t find it to be drying at all. It is sort of ‘grainy’ like you said– other than that I have no problem with these colors (Ihave a lot of them). I get this collection cheap at Kmart, believe it or not.

i have pink blush and pink champagne(from the simple lasting finish line-same ingredients anyway) and i hate the way these feel on the lips. they have an ingredient i really hate in lipsticks-myristyl myristate i think, avoid it(i know cause i have 2 lipsticks from astor that have the same ingredient and i hate the way they feel on my lips too, drying and ugh). they are grainy indeed and too slippery. too bad for the colors….

artemis Avatar

when i say drying, i mean it feels like it irritates the skin x_x well, obviously, since that myristyl thing and its derivates are rated 2-3/5 on the irritating scale(0 being not irritating)

Vero Avatar

I love this lipstick! Let me explain, though, because I totally dig what everybody is saying about the grainy texture–I feel it, too. The way I wear it, though, is just by patting on a thin layer (either straight from the bullet or with a finger), or by brushing it on with a lip brush. I think the key is to use a very thin layer. I love it as a tint, and that’s actually the reason I bought it: I wanted something dark that would feel very light and stain my lips, and this delivers, as long as you don’t really swipe it on like you would a normal lipstick…
