MAC Magic, Mirth, & Mischief Review: Lipsticks

Four shades of lipsticks debuted with MAC’s holiday color collection, with one being permanent (Pervette). Personally, I was really hoping to see another amazing holiday red from MAC this season, but I wasn’t so lucky. (Note: again, I hope to have lip swatches up tomorrow or over the weekend.)

  • Total Wow! is a semi-opaque berried-pink with gold shimmer. It reminded me of Stark Naked blush, actually, but (obviously) in lipstick form.
  • Utter Fun is a blue-based deep pink. It looks awfully red in the tube, but it swatched completely pink on my arm. I imagine if you have a lot of natural redness to your lip color, this will turn out a bit more red than pink on you, though. It’s creamy and mostly opaque, so those are pluses.
  • Surprise Me is a peachy-brown neutral with soft golden shimmer and a slight sheen. It’s an interesting color, but it doesn’t wow me. It doesn’t really say holiday to me, either.

Even though none of the shades really blew me away, I did really like the idea of a Stark Naked blush-turned-lip color, so Total Wow! is a must on my list.

Edited:  Sorry about the mix-up… when I was in-store, the artist told me Madly Creative and it didn’t occur to me to double-check!  I think I have Pervette in my stash, so I’ll swatch that when I do lip swatches.

  • Product: 25/30
  • Value: 8/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

Does Surprise Me l/s remind (if yes,in what degree ) Lolipop Loving? Is it close or totally different?

Lolipop lovin’ is more coral with a green hue to it(my absolute favourite lipstick). This Surprise Me reminded me of Costa Chic, however not as pretty. I was very disappointed.

Nah, not really. Lollipop Loving has a lot more green in it and less opacity.

I have both and I thought the same. When I swatched the 2 I could see that Utter Fun it becomes pretty clear that Utter Fun has more red to it.

Not as dark, glossy, not quite as pigmented.

    Hey Christine,
On MAC’s website it shows that Pervette is part of the collection instead of Madly Creative. Are they similar?

    • Christine

Pervette is the color that’s part of this launch, and it is a permanent shade!

Surprise Me looks like a lovely colour, but none of the colours seem to stop my heart.

How come MAC Online lists “Pervette” instead of “Madley Creative”?

    • Christine

      Monday, October 26, 2009

My artist told me the wrong thing, so sorry about that! :( I didn’t even think to double-check when I got home (they were missing one of the lipsticks).

I thought the lightest shade was Pervette, not Madly Creative? I just got back from Nordies and they had Pervette and no Madly Creative, and also checked the MAC website and they had the same thing. I’m a bit confused…

It is — my store put out Madly Creative, but it looks like they had it wrong!

When you do swatches… can you do some pairings with the colleciton’s dazzleglasses if you think of some combinations that you think go particularly amazing? ‘Cause as of now, I’m thinking maybe Utter Fun might look sort of holiday-ish with Shee-zam… but I’m not seeing any other great combinations…

    Thanks!

Hm, Surprise Me looks very pretty. I might have to check it out if it’s the peach version of Hug Me. The other ones look kind of meh.

I picked up Utter Fun. It was the only one that really struck me as the one to get. I thought I’d get Surprise Me, but it looked kinda bleh when I swatched it.

Did you not do swatches because of chapped lips? If so, I completely understand where you’re coming from. I went to a MAC counter yesterday to do my first B2M trade, and had a hard time testing out lipsticks because my lips were chapped. I ended up taking a leap of faith and just guessed what would look good on me! hah

My lips were pretty dried out from being sick, but I honestly just couldn’t handle being up any more. I had originally planned to review everything (including the palettes) the same day, but after the colour collection, I was zapped.

i would agree with you on total wow. it is a very pretty color and looks like it would add color without being too much.

Hi Christine!! Thank you for the swatches and reviews. I wonder if the utter fun lipstick is similar to lustering…or are they completely different? lol Thank you!!!! :)

    • Christine

      Monday, October 26, 2009

No problem! Similar, but different finishes/textures. I would definitely say they’re not completely different!

I was soo hoping for a nice red myself. Port red was the actual shade in my mind. but mainly because I missed out on it back then. :)

I bought all four and surprise me just might be my new everyday nude lip….It’s really easy to wear and looks good with almost any gloss color over it. Very pleased with surprise me!

I got Totally Wow yesterday and I love! It’s a great shade to get a little bit of that (fall) berry color for those of us too timid to branch out into more opaque colors! Definitely one you can put on without a mirror as well :)

When are the lip swathes coming for the MMM Collections?

    Wednesday, October 21, 2009

I went to both Nordies and my local Mac store today and they both had Pervette instead of Madly Creative, which really bummed me out because I wanted Madly Creative. I asked the MA and she didn’t know anything about it. So I bought Total Wow! but I would have bought more. If Madly Creative is coming out with another collection make sure to let us know (as you always do!) Thanks!

Hey I was wondering how Utter Fun compares to Speak Louder?
I’ve already got Speak Louder so I don’t want to get it if it’s too similar!

    • Christine

      Friday, November 6, 2009

It’s more of a fuchsia, whereas Speak Louder is more of a pink!

I would have bought the Total Wow lipstick if I didn’t already just buy the permanent Captive lipstick!
