MAC Lustretwins Pro Longwear Longwearing Lipstick Review

Posted in: MAC Cosmetics, MAC Launch Reviews

OVERALL, the new Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolours present an interesting alternative to the clear/mirror gloss coat they had in the past. The new shades are diverse from existing shades, which is great since MAC hasn’t come out with new shades in what seems like forever! Also, Alta Moda? It’s here! I know that a few of you asked me about it, because you couldn’t find it – now you can. My favorite was Ripe & Ready/Soft & Lush and Red Reflection/Mirror. Red Flame/Orange Flicker looks beyond amazing, but I don’t see myself rockin’ the color often (or maybe ever).

(You can read the color story here.)

Check out individual product reviews…

Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolour

  • Pink Air/White Top starts with a frosty pale pink (kind of like a paler version of “pornstar pnk”) as the liquid color, while White Top is a clear with pink iridescence to it. The gloss part reminds me of Luminary lustreglass or clear gloss and Pink Opal pigment. I don’t think I could pull this color off!
  • Alta Moda/Hip Love starts with a dark, vampy red (see my post on Temptalia as a Vampire!) and finishes with a gloss coat (Hip Love) of a dirty peachy color. The gloss looks a lot redder in the tube, but it didn’t go on that way for me.
  • Custom Rose/Pink Virtue starts off with a color base of a mauvey color with a little bit of brown in it. The gloss coat is a soft, champagne shimmer that’s quite sheer.
  • Red Flame/Orange Flicker starts off with a vibrant yellow-based red that has a pop of orangey-red gloss to it. I see this being very eye-catching, but I’m not entirely sure if I could wear this color. It’s quite bright!
  • Red Reflection/Mirror starts off with a berry fuchsia color base, and the gloss coat is a sheer, shimmery color (the same as the Mirror coat previous to the pro longwears). I love the shade of Red Reflection, though. It’s bright, but yet it’s not as bright as colors like Girl About Town lipstick.
  • Ripe & Ready/Soft & Lush starts off with a color base of a pop of pink with a little bit of coral tone to it. The gloss coat is a soft, shimmering peachy-gold. To be honest, the gloss reminds me of my $50 Cle de Peau gloss! Ah! This color has my name all over it!
  • Coco Lust/Sweet Sexy starts off with a color base that’s a warm, chocolate brown and finishes with a gloss coat of a soft coppery gold. I think this could be very flattering on deeper skintones.

** My store didn’t have Boss Brown/Slave to Pink or Gypsy Rose/Shimmer It – I’ll probably mention them next Friday, when Lustre Twins launches officially at all MAC stores!

Nail Lacquer

  • $$$$$ Yes is a repromote, a very frosty metallic color.
  • Perplexing is a vibrant shade of purple, kind of like Parfait Amour in lacquer form. I found it went on a little streaky, though.
  • Firehouse is a gorgeous bright red with orange shimmer. This stood out, and it definitely has a “wow” factor to it. It went on incredibly pigmented and smooth with just one coat!

My MA was talking about the PLLL’s the last time I was in, and I’m really interested to see how they swatch for me. As much as I love my usual routine of lipstick/gloss – it’d be nice to have something that really does last through food/drink.

Alta moda looks absolutely to die for.. the other two reds and custom pink are what caught my eye, and obviously I’m curious about the two that weren’t shown – since the coco seems a bit too brown for my tone.

    Awesome review! :)

      Hi Nepenthe,

They’re very lovely. I like them, and I think if you exfoliate your lips often (or are lucky to have naturally lush lips), apply vaseline/thick balm before hand (then wipe it off), these work like a charm. They’re only drying if you don’t prep right!

I’ve never tried these, but tried similar products from other lines (Revlon etc.). Are these very comfortable to wear? Are they moist? My main complaint about long lasting lipsticks is that they make my lips feel dry & shrinkwrapped.

      Hey Cloudburst,

They aren’t moisturizing, not really (well, the old ones – I haven’t tried these; not sure if they’re reformulated a lot or not). They aren’t drying if you prep your lips (exfoliate, moisturize/balm beforehand, then wipe it off, THEN apply). I never feel like they’re shrink wrapped.

My MA said they are indeed reformulated, and she let me try one. I’m wearing it now 3 hours later, and it definitely is not as gritty as the old ones. Once the gloss wears off, it gets dry as expected, but it still feels pretty good (unlike the old ones). I picked up the Custom Pink one and I really like it. :-)

As I suspected, Ripe & Ready/Soft & Lush is right up my alley. It looks stunning, both sides!

I think I better get this sooner than later, before you ladies snatch ‘em all up!

I’ll have to skip these :( I’ve only tried 1 Pro Longwear but it definitely did the shrink-wrap thing to my lips, to the point that the lipcolor adhered to the upper layer of skin on my lips and started peeling off, revealing new pink lip-skin underneath. It was sooo gross! But I can’t imagine that that happens to too many people, & i did get a nice lip exfoliation from it, I guess!

OMG, oh no! That is just terrible Carrie. I’m so sorry to hear what a horrible experience you had with those!

Can’t wait for these! I want Ripe & Ready/Soft & Lush, Pink Air/White Top and maybe one other. But Christine, I think these come out next Thursday, July 31 along with Starflash. Or did they move the launch to Friday August 1st?!

      Hi Cassie,

I can’t wait to get some either! I’m holding off on buying until the 31st (so I can use my B2Ms for the shadows).

They should come out the 31st.

I can’t wait for these! I’ve been lusting after Alta Mode for a long time. It’s mine as soon as it’s available – LOL! Red Flame and Red Reflection looks nice also. I can’t wait to see these in person.

Thanks as always, Christine, for the review (I mean enabling – lol)!

      Hi Sara,

To be honest, I really don’t know. It looked too frosty on me, but I think it would be fine on others!
