MAC for Gareth Pugh: Hyper Nail Lacquer

MAC Hyper Nail Lacquer ($23.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep blue with violet pearl” with a frost finish. It’s a really inky blue with fine blue shimmer and a violet edge. It flashes blue and violet, depending on the light. It’s a really cool shade, and it was the one that wowed me the most out of the three from this launch. China Glaze Blue Year’s Eve is a much lighter variation, but it’s more vibrant. It also reminded me of Orly Lunar Eclipse except a bluer variation with finer shimmer. It was opaque in two coats, and the formula had a good, fluid consistency that flowed evenly across the nail without bubbling or streaking.

Just to reiterate, this comes in a square glass bottle compared to MAC’s rounded jar, and the cap is a glossy black rather than a rubberized black. These are slightly smaller (0.30 vs. 0.34 fl. oz.) and $8.00 more because of the “couture” aspect of the launch. Though I have not tested the polishes specifically from this collection, MAC’s nail lacquer formula generally wears for a week with minor tip wear but no chips.

The color is gorgeous, and I don't have an exact dupe for it, but it definitely comes at a much steeper price. The formula has a good consistency, applies well, and gives opaque results in two coats, though!

Product & Review FAQ

Where can I purchase it? How much is it?

MAC Cosmetics stores and, November 23rd, $23.

Is it limited edition?

Any dupes?

China Glaze Blue Year's Eve is a much lighter variation, but it's more vibrant. It also reminded me of Orly Lunar Eclipse except a bluer variation with finer shimmer.

  1. Suspiciously similar to Sinful Color’s “Midnight Blue”…”/ Ugh, I was SO looking forward to this one, too. Please tell me they’re not really alike 😛

  2. Argh, another holiday season product I need to buy–for myself. If only it was this easy to find gifts for other people!

  3. It reminds me a lot of NYCs SKIN TIGHT DENIM CRÈME (which is so not a cream finish, it has a lot of shimmer) and it’s like $1

  4. Jess

Wow… it looked so much cooler in the bottle!

  5. TK1

Pretty color but $23 no way!!

  6. Niceasdoxie

Looks like an OPI’s “Yoga-ta get this blue”! Nice one!

  7. jenny

    I don’t see much duo-chrome action going on….

Try Sally Hansen “Laser” HD polish layered over black or navy. More duochrome than this one, and just plain gorgeous. Not terribly opaque on it’s own, but I slap a coat or two of Laser over one coat of CND Midnight Sapphire (a lovely 1-coat wonder) and I’m good to go.

The HD line is rife with duds but Laser is an absolutely STUNNING polish. You can wait for a sale and pick it up for very little. :)

This would be mine if it wasn’t so overpriced. I think Butter London is the most I will spend on a nail polish!

  9. OMG what a striking shade of blue!

  10. Disappointing :X The bottle shots of 2/3 of these looked AMAZING but on the nail it’s so average. Good for my wallet though of course.

  11. Ruth

Wow what a let down-bottle photos seemed to promise a MUCH more complex and interesting color/finish combo, I can skip this one too

  12. Lisa

Does this remind anyone of the Naughty Nauticals one they brought out a few years ago? I have that one tucked away somewhere but would be good if someone could do a comparison so I’m not itching to buy it if it’s the same! I love love LOVE anything navy blue 

  13. laden

Ah I think I know a dupe which is ”flormar supershine u08” except the pearls looks more visible in it.

  14. Will this also be available in MAC’s German online shop?

  15. Christine?
    What would Your reccomend

  16. Rebe

Reminds me of Blue Year’s Eve from China Glaze’s 2011 holiday collection…

  17. Chelle

Bah, looks better in the bottle!

  18. Courtney

Wow, that’s….disappointing. I thought it would be more two-toned with purple.

  19. dom

would you classify this as a duochrome? Was reading your description but wasn’t sure if it is. it’s a nice color but i think that there a few dupes out there – you’ve pointed out 2 already which we don’t get here in Asia, but in our local Sasa stores, we can probably find a few locally-made polishes in those shade variations. not too sure why blue is such a hot color here though :)

  20. love_like_winter

It looks alot like OPI’s Yoga-Ta Get This Blue to me!

  21. beck

Is this close to China Glaze Blue Years Eve? Looks a little close I think

  22. Yeah, I don’t think I’ll shell out $23 for this… it’s a gorgeous color though.

  23. Syrie

This looks an awful lot like OPI’s Blue My Mind. As much as I love Gareth Pugh, this is a pass for me.

  24. violette

I want to love this color so much because it’s amazing in the bottle. But the duochrome falls flat with the actual application on the nail. Same with Ascension. And for the price, I almost want to return it now.

  25. Dominique

Waouh it’s really a beautiful blue colour ! I think it’s the only thing I’ll purchase from Gareth Pugh’s collection because there a two wonderful collections that will follow ( Iris Apfel + Daphne Guinness ), M.A.C is great but they launch so many collections per year, it’s impossible to buy from each of them.

  26. Ah it looks much purpler in the bottle, was disappointed that didn’t translate. Nice colour, but I have Essie Aruba Blue which is pretty much a spot on dupe!
