Chanel Summer 2011: Lilium Eyeshadow Quad

Chanel Lilium Eyeshadow Quad ($57.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a collection of green and “brown” shades. The lighest shade is a soft peach beige with subtle warmth and a barely-there frost finis. The second lightest shade is a yellowed chartreuse green with a medium frost finish. Next, there is a smoky, bluish green with a blackened base and a metallic-frost finish. The final shade is the most complex, because it’s a mix of mauve, gray, and taupe with a dusting of cool bronze shimmer.

All four shades applied really nicely; pigmented enough to provide true-to-pan color but the texture was soft to allow for really easy application, where the colors blended seamlessly with each other and adhered well to the lid (over a base). There is a mix of tones here–the lighter shades are warmer and brightening, while the two darker shades are cooler, smokier. The size of the quad is nice, too — each eyeshadow is about 0.06 oz., which is a little higher than the average individual eyeshadow (0.05 oz.). When you start thinking about Chanel, their palettes are often the best bang for your buck.

Chanel Lilium Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches

A
The color palette of the quad is not at all what I think of when it comes to summer but yet it works. It's almost like a mix of spring and fall that pairs well with all of the corals of summer.

The green shade is really pretty. How does it compare to Humid or the green from the Mac Peacocky collection?

  2. These colours (fortunately;-) do not suit me. Love the look though!

  3. very pretty! the swatches reminded me of the MAC Valiant quad

  4. I think these colors are all super pretty, but I wish they weren’t all shimmery. I love pretty palettes, but I always feel like palettes like these lack a matte shade or blending out the shimmery shades. I also think it is more of a fall palette than a spring/summer palette.

Agreed about the shimmer! And I would think that a company like Chanel, that obviously has older clientele, would offer some more sophisticated and flattering finishes because frost is not forgiving on older lids and I cannot imagine ladies of a certain age wanting to douse themselves with shimmer anyway. Maybe they are just marketing to the younger generation that wants a piece of Chanel but cannot afford anything else

Last time I was at the Chanel counter I mentioned this very topic to the MUA and asked what was up with that? She stated that the quads for whatever the reason do end up being very shimmery, however, for those wanting a matte shade, look to the duos. She said that with the duos they typically will pair a shimmer and a matte together. I dunno about you but it seems to me if they want to sell more they’d best start listening to their customers. That’s just my opinion of course ;-)

    • Laura

I agree completely with everything you said. nuf said…

Hi there. I got this the other day and it does look a bit shimmery when swatched, BUT when actually applied to the eye I don’t notice hardly any shimmer at all. I was actually sort of hoping for less of the matte look. If these colors work for you, no worries on the shimmer! :)

  5. This is now on my list. <3

That last shade is all kinds of beautiful!!

  7. Jennifer

That is the kind of colored shadow palette I adore.
Too bad I can’t afford this one. The deep green and taupe are so beautiful!
I think I could find something in my collection of shadows to have a similar look.
    Dang it Chanel!

I only like the green one, the other colours are, as often with Chanel e/s, not pigmented enough for me.

    • They look like they do in the pan – I didn’t have any issues with pigmentation at all!

    • Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Bianca Bianca

Agreed, they aren’t pigmented except for the dark shades =/ If I’m going to spend $57 on eyeshadow, it better be the most pigmented I can find.

  9. Hmm, I was kind of interested based on the promo pics but in reality the shadows look a little common and one-note to me. Thank goodness I didn’t need this; $57 is a little steep for me right now!

  10. parris

Yea…I must have this quad. That last taupey mauve shade sold me.

    • Jill

They made that last taupe-mauvey shade into a waterproof liner too, Rose Platine, that looks awesome!

      • Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Evelyn Evelyn

I think Chanel liners don’t like me. I tried to swatch that one and could not get it to leave color on my pretty fair skin. I really had to rub it against my skin to start to leave some color then I gave up rather than breaking it. lol

Hey Christine! So is the round panned quad that was in the promo shots in the post yesterday going to be released in Europe? The colours are the same I think (from memory). Thanks!

  12. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Sarah sarah

OMG. I want this, I need this! I love the blueish dark green color, but the yellow/chartreuse color is…just amazing.

  13. doesn’t look great, but the look you created is just awesome! :)

  14. I’m dying. These are all my favorite colors. I love this.

  15. Melissa

I love the colors on the right side of the pan, especially the last one. The ones on the left, I’ve seen BILLIONS like them.

  16. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Julia Julia Minamata

Wow, this is really pretty. I love all the colours here, especially that mauve-brown one. I’ve never bought Chanel anything and with that price tag I’m unfortunately not about to start.

But we all know how Christine loves herself some chartreuse :). I’m glad she got this so she can enjoy it, not just for review purposes!

  17. It looks too much like MAC’s Photorealism quad, actually. At least to me.

  18. chartreuse and blue green combo. Divine!

  19. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Chrissy Chrissy

Ohh, I love the taupey color. I am seriously mad about taupe. I just wish it came individually. I find that a lot of taupes come in palettes.

  20. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Mariella Mariella

That light beige shade looks a lot more frosty than Orb, which I own and always thought was a matte, though it’s actually a satin finish. Is the last shade – the shimmery taupe shade – anything like either Mac Patina or Urban Decay Suspect? It looks (in the photos) like it might be close to one of those 2 shades.

  21. Stephanie

Does anyone have any MAC or UD dupes for these shades? I saw this in person the other day and it is really pretty! Tempting… but I think the colors are not that unique. I feel like they are similar to a lot I already own.

  22. Sophie

Hi Christine, would it be possible for you to compare the green in this quad to MAC Humid? :)

  23. Karen

Thanks for the review Christine! How does the dark green color here compare to the green in the Spring palette? They look very similar.

  24. Beautiful, I love this. It does remind me of the MAC Valiant quad but the pigmentation of this looks nicer.

  25. condesa

Have a question: here in Europe the Chanel quads are with “round” eyeshadows, as you know, therefore different. In your experience/ opinion this will affect the shades/pigmentation as well? or will they be similar to the US version? asking because the collection is not out yet in Europe (at least here in italy) hence I cannot swatch by myself— Thanks!!!

    • I’ve only seen a couple of the round versions, and generally, I found them to be less pigmented! Again, though, I’ve had very little experience so I couldn’t say if it’s true across all variations or this one too :(

  26. KewZee

Thank you so much for the review, Christine!

  27. Lori Jenkins

Christine, I just love you for posting Chanel! :)

Long shot, but I have to ask before I splurge on another quad – how does the dark green compare to the dark green in Regard Perle? And is the light green similar to the green in the Nymphea quad?

    • I don’t have the Nymphea quad, sorry!

As for the darker green, it is greener in the Lilium quad – they are similar, but Regarde Perle is less green, bluer, darker!

  28. Sarah

Looks like NYX 10-pan palette in Secret World dupe… I hope somebody compares the two in blogland!

  29. Trisha

I have this quad and I really must say that when applied it’s not frosty one bit or really shimmery for that matter. When you swatch it out, yes it does look a bit shimmery but for some reason when actually applied to the lid you don’t see the shimmer. It’s very subtle. For those matte lovers I think you would be quite surprised at how this actually looks when wearing :)

  30. I might just have to get this quad once I can save up enough mullah!! I think I already have something similar though.. but oh wells, its Chanel!! I think I can treat myself once in a while =)

  31. Ariel

These colors aren’t right for my skintone. Cool-colored eyeshadow makes me look like I got punched in the face. Very pretty though!

  32. Janette

I am not exactly sure if this is a real dupe, but going off the description, the MAC pigment Mauvement might work for the mauvey-taupe E/S, if you are lucky you can find it at your CCO in either the Tartan Tale or Fabulous Felines collections

  33. tawny

i have one channel quad called dunes and it’s turned me off from buying any more. it’s so powdery and not pigmented. this looks so pretty though, i’m just scared i’ll be disappointed again :(

  34. Maribeth

I did purchase the Stylo Rose Platine today – I have never seen a color like it. I passed on Lilium although I wanted to buy it for the chartreuse alone. That is a beautiful color! But again I’ll look for less expensive dupes :). Came THIS close….

    Hello Christine,

After reading your review I went out and added this quad to my collection but call me crazy I live in Holland and my pallet looks different the eyeschadow’s are round and the applicators are black and white and on the otherside it has the same name so I hope it will apply the samen do you know why there is a difference?

    • For whatever reason, Chanel manufactures baked variations of the quad outside of the U.S. (I believe even Canada gets round pans). No idea why really.

I haven’t had much experience with the baked versions since I live in the U.S. but you might want to use them damp.
