Orange Majorelle (16)

YSL Orange Majorelle (16) Rouge Volupte Shine Oil-in-StickYSL Orange Majorelle (16) Rouge Volupte Shine Oil-in-Stick ($38.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a brighter, medium-dark coral with moderate, warm undertones–balanced between pink and orange–paired with a luminous sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which applied fairly evenly but could have been a little more flattering to wear as there was a smidgen of product that settled into my lip lines, though not enough to be visible in person.

The texture felt smooth, balmy, and comfortable to apply and to wear as it skated across my lips and felt almost like melting butter, though not quite that slippery. It lasted well for three and a half hours and felt lightly moisturizing over time.

Formula Overview

$38.00/0.11 oz. - $345.45 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to be "deeply hydrating" and "melt" onto the lips with a "pop of color" and give long-term hydration. It is described as having "medium coverage" and "irreverent shine." The color coverage was typically medium, as described, though some of the deeper shades were more buildable to semi-opaque coverage.

They're a very, very creamy, emollient formula; they slip-slide as they melt against the lips during application, and it feels luxurious to apply but can be easily over-applied. It's just the type of texture that lends itself to over-application without adding more coverage, so I recommend being mindful in order to ensure you'll get plenty of usage out of each tube. Fortunately, once on, they don't feel thick or overly slippery, so it doesn't feel like the lipstick is constantly moving while worn.

They have a high-shine, almost glossy, finish that often smoothed out my lip lines without settling into them, and the latter made it more impressive due to the amount of color and slip. The wear time varied from shade to shade but typically landed between three and five hours. Some shades leave a faint stain behind--usually the mid-tone and darker hues. The formula has a sweet, mango scent but no discernible taste.

Smoking Plum (48)

YSL Smoking Plum (48) Rouge Volupte Shine Oil-in-StickYSL Smoking Plum (48) Rouge Volupte Shine Oil-in-Stick ($38.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a soft, light-medium plum with cooler undertones and a luminous finish. It had a glossier finish with a lot of shine but wasn’t shimmery. The texture was lightweight, smooth, and balm-like with a lot of slip. It feels a lot like a tinted lip balm, which made it easy to glide across my lips–almost too smooth!–and comfortable to wear.

It had semi-sheer to medium coverage, which could be built up to semi-opaque pigmentation but always had translucency to it, which was as marketed. It stayed on well for three and a half hours and felt lightly hydrating over time.

The Orange Majorelle definitely reads more coral than orange, which just doesn’t work for me. I’m very fair, with a pinkish undertone, and I have yet to find a coral lip color that works for me. Most of them also have that “milky” undertone to them as well, which reads “grandma-ish” to me (no offense to anyone’s grandma who prefers such shades; they just aren’t my personal taste!).

Maybelline’s Mauve for Me is quite a lovely coral kind of lipstick, with a hint of brown in it to stop it being too pink. I know exactly what you mean about finding the right coral shade, as I have a similar complexion to you.

I think these are lovely shades, but the orange coral one is, perhaps, not the best formula as it only rated a B for such an expensive lipstick. Like Jennifer above. it is too pinky for me.

Ugh, if not for masks, I would buy Smoking Plum in a hot minute. It just has a juicy translucency to it that I love during summer. Doesn’t hurt that it’s a gorgeous color, too!
