YSL Nude Beige (1) Rouge Volupte Lipstick
YSL Rouge Volupte Lipsticks

Rouge Volupte is still one of the more popular lipstick formulas on the market, and it’s a range that YSL has continued to expand and release additional shades for since it initially launched. (And fun tidbit, they haven’t changed price at all in six years.) The formula is very creamy with a high degree of slip, is medium-weight and slightly thick compared to the average lipstick, and is typically opaque on lips. Because of their creaminess, full color coverage is possible in one stroke with many shades. The finish is glossy and shiny, which gives lips a smoother appearance. One of the primary traits of the formula is that lips look drenched in color and very, very smooth–almost plumper. The formula is moderately hydrating, and the wear time is about average, but it can depend on the shade.

YSL Caress Pink (9) Rouge Volupte Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “muted raspberry pink.” It’s a brightened, medium pink with neutral-to-warm undertones and a luminous shine. It had rich, opaque color coverage and wore well for four hours. Givenchy Rose Taffetas (201) (P, $36.00) is lighter, less glossy. Buxom Mistress (LE, $21.00) is similar. MAC Hoop is warmer, more matte. See comparison swatches.

Forbidden Burgundy (12) Rouge Volupte Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deep berry with cool, blue undertones and a glossy shine. It had nearly full color coverage, but there was a slight translucency overall. What’s impressive about this shade is how evenly the color applies for something this glossy and not fully opaque. It wears about five hours on me and leaves a slight stain behind. Marc Jacobs Beauty Seduce Me (128) (P, $30.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Venom (P, $22.00) is slightly purpler. MAC Rebel (P, $16.00) is similar. Guerlain Flirt (LE, $35.00) is warmer. Burberry Bright Plum (15) (P, $30.00) is warmer, redder. See comparison swatches.

Peach Passion (13) Rouge Volupte Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “vibrant peachy pink.” It’s a light-medium peach with a hint of pink and a glossy, creamy finish. It was richly pigmented and yielded fully opaque color on the lips. It lasted for three and a half hours on me. NARS Torres del Paine (LE, $25.00) is darker, more orange. Givenchy Beige Plume (102) (P, $36.00) is more beige. MAC Gotta Dash! (P, $16.00) is more orange. See comparison swatches.

Just as an FYI, YSL’s own e-commerce website seems to have the largest selection of shades.

I LOVEd Forbidden Burgundy, it looks amazing on you and I’ve been on the hunt for just that type of color! But I’m paler than you, I’m something like NC 15-20 in MAC. Do you think that might look like a deeper burgundy or just like the tone that looks on you? I think this sounded a bit silly lol But I really really liked this and a 2014 resolution of mine is to get into lipsticks more cause I always love them in theory but bought only two last year! Haha

I think it may look a little darker against your skin tone, but it should still read as a cool berry (not a red berry), I would think! I’m NC25 for reference!

I love the Burgundy one, gorgeous! With YSL Rouge Volupte lipsticks, I have to wear lip liner and blot a couple times or else they bleed, but other than that they are nice lipsticks. They look fab on you Christine!

How does Caress Pink compare to Mac Chatterbox?
And does anyone know how Peach Passion compares to Nars Lodhi? I’ve seen Lodhi pull very pink on a lot of people but on you, Christine, it was a very pretty peachy orange, so I’m confused.

Thank you! Also, I may have found a dupe for Mac Up The Amp. Rimmel’s lasting finish lipstick in Royalty. I don’t own Up The Amp but it just looks really similar to it. Nice lipstick, and good way to try the purple colour without spending 15 dollars on the MAC version directly.

Rouge Volupte has to be one of my fave lipstick lines! Their pricey but soo worth it! I own Forbidden Burgundy and it’s one of my faves! It’s such a beautiful fall color! I think Caress Pink is next on my list. I NEED it!

I really like 12 and 13. I wonder if the peach might be cool enough for me to pull off? I’ll have to swatch it next time I get a chance to get to a Saint Laurent counter.

The peach color is quite warm (cool-toned lipsticks make me look ill, and this one looks very nice on me.) But the color is so beautiful, so it’s worth it to try it on!

ohhh man I really dig these and I wish I didn’t cause the price tag is a liiiiittle too steep for me. ah I suppose I can skim off $8 from each paycheck this month to justify one as a gift to myself… the only problem is I don;t live near a YSL counter! πŸ™ My Sephora is a Sephora in JCP so they’re kinda teeny. I’d have to order online without swatching myself and that makes me nerrrrrvous.

but I looooove forbidden burgundy. agh!

Forbidden Burgandy I picked up at Sephora in the fall, and I LOVED it! But, when raving about it, other’s couldn’t find it. So happy to see it’s back! It’s great used in full strength…or also, as it’s very creamy and pigmented, I like to use my finger and smooth it out like a balm stain. Definitely one of my all time favs!

I have Forbidden Burgundy….love! And, apparently I love the shade so much, I have two of the dupes as well πŸ˜‰ Today I’m wearing #3 but I can’t remember the name of it…it’s a pinky brown nude. I need to add more of these to my collection…they’re a good formula for me and I love the cases. They’re a work of art in themselves.

Had a look through these before I saw the swatches and thought they looked quite drying. But seeing the swatches oh my they look so glossy, and shiny. Yet another expensive piece of make-up I am adding to my wish list. I’d say Rouge Volupte as it looks the most wearable for me.

It’s interesting, because some readers find the Rouge Volupte formula to be horribly drying – to the point of bleeding/cracked lips – and others swear by it.

forbidden burgundy is the only rouge volupte i have. it looks WAY darker and more purple/plum on me than it does on you though! even though i bought it, in great part, because of your swatches, i love the color on me even though it looks totally different. this formula surprised me. i never looked twice at them in the store because i thought they would be sheer. i think the shape of the bullet made me think this. i usually don’t use a lip brush so i was a bit worried about application because of the shape. i have to take my time with this color, but i still don’t have to use a brush. my only problem is that it feels so slippery on my lips, i constantly think i have lipstick everywhere! but i don’t.

It applies extremely well for a shade like this – I have dozens of swatches of berries and burgundies with this much glossiness/slip that look so uneven!

I have all three of these and they are so pretty- but I must say- all three look way better on you- I do adore YSL and their beautiful packaging!

All 3 colours look Gorgeous on you Christine!

Personally, I can’t carry Peach Passion> Forbidden burgundy just went on my “To Buy” list. And I love Caress Pink – on my it looks more neutral and natural rather than a pop of pink. It looks very easy on the eyes….love it!

The packaging makes me so happy and I’m not even that much of a packaging person! Are you planning on reviewing the new three shades Christine?

These are all sooo beautiful oh my goodness <3 I especially love the first one! Maybe I'll finally splurge on my first YSL purchase and get one of these!

I love how smooth and creamy and juicy these look! I seriously cannot believe I’ve never even swatched one (especially since of all makeup items, lipsticks are my particular weakness!).

These look so lovely on you, Christine, thanks for going back over this collection! I might have continued to overlook them, otherwise! πŸ˜€

Can I just say how absolutely obsessed I am with these lipsticks? I bought my first one last month and if it weren’t for the steep price tag, I would probably own the entire collection by now. They all look great on you, btw. Thanks for the review!

Ok, that’s it, I don’t think I can live without Forbidden Burgundy anymore. I know it’s similar to Rebel, but Rebel doesn’t have that amazing red in it! You look great in all 3, but Forbidden Burgundy looks particularly glamorous on you!

I really love Forbidden Burgundy on you! Does the lipstick have a scent? I’d love to get it, but scented cosmetics usually give me migraines.

Recently you’ve been looking even lovelier than usual in your photos– so bright eyed and fresh looking! Are you using a new mascara technique perhaps?

WOW, these are so pigmented and creamy-looking!
I’m liking all three shades way more than the previous ones you’ve reviewed.

Caress Pink is one of my all time favorite pink lipsticks. Somehow I almost never find it locally & always end up ordering online. Its one of the few lipsticks I buy over and over again.
Forbidden Burgundy is so beautiful on you & its 10x more stunning IRL! Its such an amazing lipstick.

The real question is if I have venom do I need forbidden burgundy? Please say yes πŸ™‚ Also, I got peach passion after seeing you wear it and it is gorgeous.
