Do you write reviews for beauty products you've purchased?

Do you write reviews for beauty products you’ve purchased? Whether it’s on the retailer’s website, a beauty review depository, or you have your own blog…

I sure do 😉 Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Comments that do not adhere to our comment policy may be removed. Discussion and debate are highly encouraged but we expect community members to participate respectfully. Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Experience is helpful, but I’m sure you’ve tried enough products to know a good one from a bad one – and sometimes all you can do is go, “You know, I don’t have a lot of these, but I like this because of XYZ.” 🙂 Knowing why someone likes something is still useful, even if they haven’t tried every single formula on the market.

Of course I do! Since I’m a blogger 🙂 and each time there’s something interesting I’ve recently purchased, I like to share my opinions on my blog ^.^
Have a nice weekend!

Yep, on makeupalley mostly. But only after I given them a decent run to test out the product (or I really dislike it and won’t use it more than a couple of times).

Beauty products can be a very subjective topic and what works for someone may not work for everyone. Likewise, if you hate something, someone else may like it, so it pays to be honest about why you don’t like it.
Nothing drives me bonkers more than a review that says “This is terrible, it sucks and I’ll never buy it again!” or “I didn’t use this but I didn’t like it and I think it broke me out! Awful!” because they provide NO information other than a negative reaction which barely rates as qualified opinion…

That’s why finding beauty blogs that give frank, honest and detailed reviews are so AWESOME. I don’t necessarily take everything as gospel and sometimes my experience with a product is very different but at least you can trust what they write!

One of the reasons I really started writing reviews was after seeing reviews like, “1 star, ugly color on me!” because while it’s helpful to know that such and such shade may not be flattering on such and such skin tone, I’m more interested in the formula!

You do? *gasp* How did I not notice? 😉

I generally don’t, but I’d make an exception in extraordinary circumstances, such as if the product is excellent or if the customer service is a nightmare.

I sure do. I’ve written hundreds (well over 1,000) at Makeup Alley, which I think it is a wonderful site because it is entirely consumer driven – companies cannot place their loftily worded “advertising” there. Before I purchase anything, I first check it out there. It’s no absolute guarantee that the product will work for me (Nars Radiant Concealer is a case in point, though now that I have a better shade, I like it more) since what works for someone else won’t necessarily work for me and “one man’s meat is another man’s poison” but the reviews are a huge help. And since I find others’ reviews so helpful, it only seems fair that I contribute as well.

I love MUA too. I use it all the time both to research before I make a major beauty purchase and when I’m browsing the beauty aisles of a store. I don’t have quite as many reviews as you do (I’ve written 400 over the past 10 years), but it’s definitely something I’ve enjoyed contributing to.

Mariella Avatar

I just looked – I haven’t written over a thousand – only 700-and something (it’s the “helpful votes” that are over 1,000. That’s what confused me. Good thing I don’t teach math!

I often buy products as they are first released and no previous reviews are available. I feel that I owe it to my beauty compatriots to give my first impression of the product . I also feel compelled to give my 2 cents if a product is truly amazing, HG status or totally a waste of money!

I’ve written a few reviews on Sephora, but only for products that have totally blown me away–two that come to mind are Clarin’s Multi Active Night cream (?) , the one in the blue jar and Urban Decay’s Revolution lipsticks. So far, I’ve never had a total dud product, but if I ever purchase one I would probably write a negative review.

I do for my own blog, especially if it’s a product I’m excited about. Sometimes I may use it for a while and feature it in a post with a couple of other things. I don’t usually write reviews on a retailers site, but I certainly read them before I buy something!

Wwendalynne Avatar

Very rarely. I do so in the case where a product knocks one out of the park or my experience was so negative, I actually want to try and give a cautionary heads up to others. The irony here being I typically do not pay attention to non-professional reviews on retail websites. Sephora has far too many reviews and many are not well written and do not answer the question ‘why’. So, I typically come here. I also like reading the constructive comments made by fellow readers.

I do try to do this if I feel I have something meaningful to contribute. I especially like to give a shout out about a product that I think has a wow factor or is HG for me (almost never have those!).

I don’t have the discipline (or the photography skills!) to be a regular beauty blogger, but I do enjoy writing detailed beauty reviews for Makeup Alley. I don’t write them for every product I try as sometimes I don’t feel strongly enough one way or another to say much about a product’s formula, but I do write there pretty regularly and have racked up over 400 reviews in the past 10 years.

I don’t always – I’m usually most moved to write reviews if a product wows me or I think it’s horrible.
If I’m wowed – I want other women to know it’s at least worth a try, especially if the product is expensive. The same goes if I think it’s awful – except I want other women to know so they’re cautious. If they are anything like me – they don’t have the money or the time to waste on products that don’t deliver.

Of course i do Chris I write my review on the retailer site. By The Way My dears I fell in love with a Topshop Lip Color callled Pink Crystal it is super sparkly and fun it corresponds to your PH Level it is just fanatstic. Try It and you will love it. I did.Your Blog is amazing. 🙂 If I need to buy something you’re my go to reference.

rosewinnie Avatar

Yeah… no, I don’t. However, I use Microsoft Word to write short reviews of everything I purchase, lol, so I will be aware of whether I should buy something again or not, stock up things not sold in my country, etc… ^^

Lisa Avatar

I do! I read reviews. My friends don’t share my passion for beauty products so reviews are a great help. I try to pay it forward by returning the favor.

Vanessa Avatar

I do for clothing and other consumer items — but not really for makeup… odd. I guess I attribute a lot of why I like or dislike a project to personal preference. I also blame product shortfalls in myself, like if eyeliner travels, it’s probably because I ride my bike and splash my face with water 😉

I do write reviews here and there on places like Influenster. The most recent reviews I have done is on my empties video. My videos are not as detail as yours though. I always wondered how you come up with such an extensive dupe list. Do you just remember similar items? Or do you swatch products next to each other when you think it might be the same?

Christine Avatar

Hey Monica,

The Swatch Gallery was actually built first for my needs, which was to have an easier way to remember and be able to pull up past shades I’ve reviewed, so I start there. When things are really close, then I go and look at them in person (or if the lighting is different, as it has changed a couple of times over the course of eight years!).

Sarah Avatar

I like to write a brief, concise review on the retailer’s website. I’m new to beauty and I don’t know all of the terminology that more seasoned bloggers/vloggers/reviewers use, so I like to hope that my input might help other girls in the same situation.

Melissa Avatar

I don’t write reviews often, but I love completing surveys. I watched a YouTube video review the other day of skin care products. The reviewer gave a negative review of the moisturizer she used. What REALLY IRRITATED me was at the end of the video, she said she has oily skin and used a product for dry skin. I thought, why bother, if it isn’t for your skin type, why would you review it. Why not purchase a product made to address your skin care needs, sheesh!
