When was the last time you decluttered?

It’s probably been a month or more at this point, so I am due. I’ll likely start doing a more aggressive weed through of what I have in late October (when I’m less busy).

I think it was in june, when I bought a bigger empty palette to put every eyeshadow I have. If it didn’t fit it had to go. That helped me get rid of colours I didn’t really enjoy, but kept “just in case”. Oh lately I got rid of old lipstick that smelled very much expired.

Too long ago! A couple of years ago, my sister asked me if I had any makeup I could give her, so I gave her most of my DS makeup. She doesn’t appreciate makeup at all, but needed some to wear at her new job. The one higher end product I gave her was a brand new MAC lipstick that I had as a backup. It was a perfect neutral shade for her…then she lost it about a week later.

Also, I’ve done a couple of Back-to-MACs with shades I never use, if that counts.

It’s been about a year and I’m due for another round of decluttering. I’ll be letting go of some products I just never reach for as well as products I just don’t like. Any lipsticks that I declutter will go in the trash and the few eye shadows will be sterilized and given to friends who take anything I declutter.

I rarely declutter because I don’t have a large amount of makeup. I do give products away when they don’t work for me. For example, if I purchase a palette and it does not show up well on me, instead of returning it I will give it to a friend. I am trying to be more conscious of my purchases and I am thinking of wearing makeup more to finish what I have instead of purchasing and amassing more than what I can use in my lifetime.

It’s been awhile. I really want to clean house. I get tired of having ‘stuff’ around. Not that I’m a minimalist, but I have a really low tolerance for clutter. (I need to clean out a lot of drawers and shelves, not just those for makeup and beauty items.)

When I think of declutter I think in terms of actually sitting down, going through my collection and consciously getting rid of stuff. When my daughter was in college, I decluttered more and gave the products to her friends. Now, I pretty much only declutter lipsticks and I usually do that twice per year and I will be doing it again pretty soon. When I did my last declutter, I vowed to only bring in a new lipstick when I got rid of a different one and that lasted about a month and then I went to Sephora and it went by the wayside. I am a self-confessed lipstick junkie.

I hate clutter! That doesn’t mean that things don’t get a bit messy or a little disorganized now and then, but it’s never for very long. In general I clean up, put away, sort, etc. as I go. You know the old saying: A place for everything and everything in its place.

Declutter Fear is real. The reason I hold on to older makeup is due to the fear that I’ll see some random tutorial where they’ll use, say, Mac Angel lipstick, and I’ll have already purged that color, since it doesn’t quite suit me. But maybe the way they pair it with a certain lip pencil, it works with the overall look. This is why I have drawers full of eyeshadow palettes and lipstick bullets. Can’t just be me.
