What was the last product you purchased because someone else wore it or recommended it?

Here are some products I’ve purchased on a reader’s recommendation that I can recall semi-recently: Laura Geller Lip Scrub, Drunk Elephant serum/oil (one of those), Avene Cold Cream, Josie Maran Hand Cream.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara – Nancy T. recommended this in a post, and I got it during a 20% off Ulta sale. I haven’t opened it yet, because I’m trying to finish up a few other mascaras first. It sounded like it’s bulletproof, and bulletproof sounds good to me.

Let’s see, between your blog, as well as fellow readers here and my daughter; way too many to try to count! Some NOTABLES: WnW Reserve Your Cabana and Fergie Take On The Day Eyeshadow Primer, Sephora Contour Pencil Eyeliners and their lipgloss formula too, Belif Moisture Bomb, the Simple brand of face wipes, MAC Silver Sun EDES, Colourpop eyeshadows and cheek products, MUFE Artist Shadow, etc. See what I mean?
Now all I really need is to decide on my next eye cream! Dr.Dennis Gross Ferulic Acid & Retinol Eye Cream or Clarins Extra Firming Eye Cream (BOTH have caffeine, which I love for firming and depuffing). Don’t know about eye serums, they honestly scare me because they’re “runny”, so I wouldn’t want them seeping into my eyes. Fresh Black Tea was good, but actually didn’t really have caffeine! LoL! But I thought it did!

I started using Ole Henriksen Fresh Start Eye Creme about a month ago and I looove it. I think it’s the only creme that I have found that I actually feel has improved the condition of my undereyes. It is super moisturizing; it is so thick it’s almost a balm texture. Plus the tub is a full ounce(!) so the price is quite reasonable.

Lindsey Avatar

I tried the WnW Fergie eyeshadow primer based on your recommendation and I really like it. I purchased the repackaged version because I couldn’t find anymore of the Fergie version and it works the same for me. Thanks Nancy!

Katherine T. Avatar

You’re welcome! And I learned about the WNW Fergie Eye primer from another Temptalia reader here who swore by it, otherwise, I would never in a million years have tried it. So just paying it forward 🙂

I’ve never bought anything just because someone else wore it or recommended it. We are all too different for me to depend on that. People give recommendations I will look into and research. I come on Temptalia and research here. I go many random places and gain an idea of being certain I want something. I find out about many products on my own accord. I know what works for me. My instinct works but not because of just one person. Others are most helpful answering any questions I have which help me decide. This blog does is an example of Christine and readers that do it daily. 🙂

Thanks to coming here, Tom Ford eye shadow quads, Tom Ford Cream Colors for Eyes, Laura Mercier Highlight 101 and Guerlain Meteorites. I’m the only makeup enthusiast I know so I come here for my beauty fix.

I watched a youtuber rave about Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk UV Foundation for a few months and I finally caved and bought it – one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. Oh and Kevyn Aucoin Medium (the contour shade) and Candlelight. Love them all!

The last product that arrived (though I ordered it in late December or early January) was the Zoeva Cocoa Blend palette (along with another palette and a brush set). I had wanted to get some brushes from Zoeva for ages but saw a lot of talk about the Cocoa Blend palette so decided to give it a go. The most recent purchase itself was the Urban Spectrum Palette because I have access to the internet and like makeup so duh.

Ettusais Mineral BB Cream! A friend who looked like she had amazing skin was wearing it and I needed a new bb cream in my life so I was curious to try it out. Worked out ok, it’s a bit silicon-y but that’s probably what gives the skin a smoother appearance.

So what did you think about that tonic? I read about it on here as well and for $15 thought it was worth a try but the bottle is SO TINY. How do you use it? Did you LOVE and is it worth the money?

LindaLibraLoca Avatar

I haven’t tried it enough to already have a fixed opinion. First impression was good. I was using the Clarins Doux Exfoliant in the mornings for more than two years and wanted to see if it could replace it, as it is cheaper, but similar judging by the ingredients.
Usually I cleanse in the mornings, the apply the tonic on a cotton pad all over my face, neck AND back of my hands and leave it like this for some time (get dressed, apply deodorant, brush teeth… all that stuff) and then follow with a face spritz, serum and moisturizer.

Wet and wild Reserve your Cabana Highlighter. Because of your review 🙂 I read your review and I HAD to have it. And yes, it’s gorgeous.

Someone else as someone I know personally or as, say, beauty gurus and reviewers like Christine?

If the former, then I got quite a few items on recommendations of a MAC SA (does that count?). Like blush in “Baby don’t go” (to use as a contour powder) or Mineralize Foundation loose or eye pencils in Prunnella and Phone Number 🙂

If beauty gurus and reviewers count, it’s even worse 🙂 Mary-Lou Manizer, NARS Sheer Glow foundation, all the UD products I have, NARS Radiant Creamy concealer, MAC Pro Longwear concealer, MUFE artist eye shadow to name a few.

Have not bought anything on a recommendation of my friends or family simply because NO ONE around me as passionate about makeup and knows as much as I do about it. Feels lonely sometimes, I have to admit 🙂 So usually I am the one recommending stuff.

Jessica Avatar

Oh you’re the only other person I know who has “Baby don’t go”! I bought it a few months ago and I love it. I have fair NW20 skin and I use it as a contour product some days, but more often as a blush. I wanted a gold look with no shimmer whatsoever, which sounds weird but I really like it. It looks a little different but in a good way. Anyway, rave.

Natalia Avatar

Blush twins! 🙂 Yes, I love it too. In fact, it’s the only blush that I hit pan with (my 3-4 y.o. Warm Soul, for example, barely lost its dome). And that’s considering it’s only half a year old and I have three other contour shades to choose from 🙂

Julia Avatar

Looxi Highlighters! I saw them mentioned in the comments on one of your posts and decided to give them a try just a week or two ago. It was also my first indie beauty purchase! They are really fun, I’m glad I tried them 🙂

Julia Avatar

Oh, and a snagged a ton of Illamasqua nail polish from the Hautelook sale last week. I was on the fence until I saw all the A+ Ratings you gave them- sold! I just wish the shipping from from that site wasn’t so long!

Sarah Avatar

I hopped on the Nivea Men’s Aftershave Balm primer trend after KathleenLights tested it out. I’m glad I did though! My skin alternates between “I can see my reflection in the oils on my face” and “the actual Sahara desert” so it’s really hard for any primer (or just makeup in general) to work well on both types. The Nivea balm doesn’t cling to dry patches, soothes my angry redness, and keeps my oil from disturbing my foundation. Plus I grew up like my sister, always wearing men’s cologne instead of perfume because I liked the smells, so I love putting it on and just smelling it. Is that weird? It’s probably weird. No regrets though.

Cat Avatar

Aside from purchases I’ve made after seeing them reviewed here? After watching Tara of Tarababyz review her favorite brushes, I purchased the Sephora Pro Airbrush concealer brush #57. I loved it so much, I bought a second one! Same story with the Marc Jacobs foundation brush, and I plan to pick up another one of those, too.

Marissa Avatar

almost everything i buy (after seeing reviews or people talking about them) … the last thing i bought was the ‘nivea men aftershave balm’ to use it as a primer because nikkietutorials gave it praise. it’s a lot of product and only costs 7$ (where i live) … also i bought a morphe palette to enter the bandwagon, i’m weak haha

I have purchased a lot of skin care on Paula Begoun recommendations. On makeup I have purchased a lot of it on your recommendations. The last one was Bobbi Brown Pink Buff lipstick.

I usually consult temptalia and often a couple of other blogs before making color cosmetics purchases, so I try buy things based on your recommendations quite often, Christine! Your methodology for evaluating products is consistent and reliable. It’s tricky with cosmetics, because colors can look different on different skin tones and products react differently on different skins, but knowing how a product has worked for other people can be really helpful when deciding what to buy.

My friends aren’t into makeup the way I am. I’m more likely to read a new book or try a new food or restaurant based on a friend’s recommendation.

Melissa Avatar

Hmmmmm… the last item I purchased recommended by literally all make-up artists I’ve met (and of course you) is the Ambient Lighting Edit (Palette) and Mineral Veil Primer by Hourglass…. Such beautiful products and people have been complimenting my face more…NO REGRETS!! *swats flies coming out of her wallet*

ElKay Avatar

I purchase almost all of Christine’s recommendations. If I know it’s a color I’ll never wear, I don’t purchase it. OCC Technopagan comes to mind.

Bibi Avatar

Hmmm…
L’Oreal Infallible 24 hr eyeshadow in Iced Latte- Great dupe for Stila Kitten, like it better than Stila Kitten because there’s less fallout
IT Cosmetics Tightliner mascara- Boo! I found Nyx’s Skinny mascara to be less than half the price & just as good.
Bobbi Brown’s Tinted Eye Brightener in Porcelain Peach – it really works!
IT Cosmetics Vitality Disc- Disappointed, contour/bronzer shade looks like dirt on my face, blush looks clown orange, highlighter shade is GREAT, overall compact is TOO HUGE to travel or keep in my purse
Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation in Vanilla – AMAZING inexpensive foundation, can’t wait to try more Bourjois products

Nothing particular, but I listen to you, WG, Lisa E and the readerships. Check new arrivals on S, U, Beautylish, etc. Then I check your review, Paula’s Choice team review, check the ingredient list, and customer reviews. So busy checking, you wouldn’t think I’d have time to buy. But, one it’s vetted, it is like the old adage about shoes: if it fits, buy it in every color!

Nars Damage lipstick was recommended to me as it would be a good MLBB color. It totally is as my natural lips do have pigment and it is a sheer formula and not as purple as it looks in the tube. I am glad I took the advice and bought it.

Anita Avatar

Too Faced melted lipstick and The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer (that one is in the mail on its way to me) – saw them on many blogs and had to try them.
Blog posts make me WANT everything, but I’m much more likely to actually purchase after getting a sample. I buy WAY more beauty products since Sephora opened in my city – I think 90% of the things I sample I end up loving and buying.

Effaclar BB Blur reviewed and blogged by amodelrecommends. It is, frankly, insane. Price, texture, coverage, simplicity – spot on & wonderful product.

I bought Inglot get eye liner in color 78 which is a medium/dark grey. I am seriously challenged with liquid or cream eye liners for a precise line. I have found this to be easy to apply and dries so fast that it doesn´t migrate into the crepey eye lids. The color is perfect as black is a bit stark and brown can often be to warm. I am going to try a couple more adventurous colors!
THANK YOU to the person who mentioned it…I wish I could remember your name, give you a hug and send you a batch! (My daughter is doing an internship in Poland, makes for easy shopping)

kellly Avatar

I bought that new Garnier moisturizing gel because it got a good review on Musings of a Muse, and I love it. I’m also planning to get at least a couple of those ColourPop matte lip things that you reviewed the other day.

Debbie Avatar

I bought the entire line of L’Oreal’s line of Colour Riche Monos Eye Shadows except for one after watching Tati swatch and review them. I did not get the Grand Bleu because it didn’t swatch as well as the rest of them.

JESSIKA Avatar

99.9% OF MY MAKEUP STASH LOL. I know what will work for me and I know what won’t. I don’t run out and buy everything that’s suggested because 1. I’m not made of money and 2. I don’t need everything I see. I don’t like spending my hard earned money without doing a little research first. Out of all the things I purchased because of someone else’s recommendation, the only product I regret purchasing is the the Sacha Buttercup powder. For me personally, it sucks for setting my concealer. But everything else was a win for me.

I just went to Ulta and splurged $15 on a small tube of Bye Bye Foundation CC Cream because I have seen so many infomercials on TV about how great it is for your skin ect. It’s not in my norm to buy many things from TV. I am guilty of buying in my early 20’s Proactive and it was an awesome buy at the time I used it, and I used it for 10 years! It worked for me. In my 30’s and until about 3 years ago I was an advad user of Meaningful Beauty, it is an awesome product and it worked for me! It still does! Very pricey but being newly 45 years old and out of work for medical reasons.. We, my husband and I just couldn’t find the cash to continue with it, sadly! Boots No7 skin care line, is good but I miss my Meaningful Beauty! When people guess my age, they say 30. However, I feel like I need to add..results vary obviously and product lines get bad raps and bad reviews. Like I always say, stick to whatever works best for you and makes you happy. But the people that I went to Elementary School and High School, CAN’T believe that it’s ME. It’s nice to hear compliments for once! I’m NOT tormented anymore, but I Don’t let it get to my head either. Lol. 🙂

Most, if not nearly all, of my current eye shadow palettes were recommended here: The Playlist, Wonderful jewel palette, emerald pretty, bonne etoile, the Nakeds 1 & 2, Vice 2 etc.
I have also championed the Maybelline Colour Sensational Range, as a lot of the lipsticks I have tried have been great.

Sugarpill Trinket liquid lipstick (I also ordered the Sparkle Baby palette, but that was on my list for a long time). I saw the photos of Amy and other people wearing it and I knew I had to have it.

For products actually recommended, I finally caved and bought that dang Nivea Men aftershave balm. I had just glossed over all the dry skin people saying it’s great because my skin is almost never dry, but when I heard/saw Nicole from youngwildandpolished say that it was doing well for her oily skin, it convinced me to try it. So far, I like it, but am not noticing a huge difference. I like the feel of it, though. It’s a lot more comfy than those suffocating silicone primers.

The John Freda Frizz Ease range. Had tried so many different shampoo ranges but still my wavy hair frizzed up. Not with these products though. I wish I could think of something more fun or interesting!

Cathy Avatar

Too Faced Chocolate Milkshake Liquid Lipstick, and I like it a lot. I’m wearing it today, in fact 🙂 Sadly, it hasn’t brought any boys to my yard yet…lol 😉

I can go after my own head in the drugstores and other places, and I only actively listen to advice rarely… the only thing I’d do is to check reviews for a product that seems interesting to me.

But ones that come to my mind for the question:
– Naturland’s Solutio Antisudorica (this is a clinical strength pharmacy deodorant liquid)
– Picture Polish nail polishes

Thanks to your blog, Karen from Makeup and Beauty Blog & YouTube, most of what I buy is based on someone’s recommendation or review. My latest purchases include the UD Spectrum palette, NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint & NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Tarvos.

Amy Macedo recommended Stila’s liquid lipstick in Caramello, and it’s amazing. She’s very tan, and I’m very pale (like nc3) and it’s a gorgeous light beige on me, and it’s a pinky-nude on her. No regrets there!

I had been researching foundations for a few months. On the recommendation of Wayne Goss I tried the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick. It wasn’t even on my radar but I respect his opinion and approach to makeup. Seriously the most perfect foundation for me.
