What was the last product you bought that was poorly reviewed (or received by others)? How did it go for you?

I bought Lancome’s Le Monochromatique Eye & CheekMini palette, but the reviews were dismal across multiple retailers, so I ended up giving it a lower priority… to the point where I ended up donating it altogether (never swatched at all).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

There are two products I bought a few years ago without reading reviews, but found out they were poorly reviewed afterwards: (1) Maybelline Blushed Nudes Eyeshadow Palette and (2) Too Faced White Chocolate Chip Eyeshadow Palette. I bought the latter for $8 at Nordstrom Rack. These palettes had barely any pigmentation at all. I wound up giving away the Maybelline, but I still have the Too Faced buried in a drawer somewhere.

Normally, I wouldn’t buy a high-end palette that received less than an A- rating on Temptalia, but I went for Dior Backstage Cool Neutrals anyway, and I’m glad I did. It’s one of my favorites in my collection and I use it often.

Nothing comes on top of my mind from recent purchases. Usually I’m disappointed (or not that impressed) on over-hyped products.
But I do love the Becca 24 Hour Ultimate Coverage Foundation, it gave me great coverage while having a natural matte finish, had amazing staying power on my combination skin without over-drying it. At first I wondered why people aren’t praising it more, to find throughout the years it consistently gets poor reviews; I know each skin is different, but even people who have similar foundation faves as me hated it.

The last ones I can recall were the cream Orgasm palette by NARS and the UD GoT eye palette. LOVE the Nars cream palette and think the GoT palette is stunning with a great formula to boot. I think people hate creams as far as the Nars goes, but the GoT got hate from people who either didn’t watch the show and couldn’t appreciate the extravagant packaging, or who are married to having an “all in one palette” instead of a special addition.

I bought a Nabla single in Glasswork, I believe it had received a C rating. I really didn’t enjoy this eyeshadow, I agree with all the negative sides listed in the review. However, another C rated single eyeshadow – Aura by Hourglass did pretty well for me, granted it’s not a perfect product, but I like the shade and effect so much, that I’m ready to put up with the drawbacks

E.L.F. eyelid primer. It was the first eyelid primer I ever tried and it did the job. My eye shadow no longer creases even though I have oily lids. I have since learned of mediocre ratings for this product and that many other eyelid primers supposedly are better. However, I have stuck with the E.L.F. primer for the past 5 years or so because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Kat von D 10th Anniversary Everlasting Glimmer Veil in Gold Skool. I bought it before reviews came out, because at the time I had nothing but good experiences with the Glimmer Veils.

It was a disaster. Very little product, it was dry as hell, and the sponge came off the applicator tip the first time I used it. It was sparse and patchy, looking nothing like the promo pictures. All the reviews that came out saying how awful it was were right. I returned it.

I was intrigued by Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer, but about half the reviews seemed to say the product ruined their skin… Decided I wouldn’t get it because I couldn’t try it first. I was lucky and got a sample with a Glossier order I placed and I fell in love! Ordered it for their Black Friday sale and now my search for primer is over.

I bought the subculture six months ago after a long time. I was worried about the bad reviews, I actually love it! The powders are difficult to work with but the colour scheme is so unique, cold, warm, dark, that I totally felt in love with it!

The original Huda Rose Gold palette. I don’t usually even care about reviews until after I try something, but back when this came out, I didn’t buy as much as I do now so it was almost inevitable that I would see one. I actually really loved this palette even though people didn’t seem to.

I DID buy the Rose Gold Remastered as well, though, to compare, and it’s even better.
