What was the last product you bought because of packaging?
What was the last product you bought because of packaging? Was it worth it? Share!
I think the last one was one of the MAC x collaboration makeup bags… I collect them for no rational reason, but I’ve just been doing it for so long…
Thanks to Katie for today’s question! Do you have a question idea? Submit yours here.
MAC Philip Treacy highlight powder. I couldn’t resist the art deco pattern!
I bought a Lancome blush quad several years ago, which came in a silver mesh compact. However, the selling point was the actual product, although the classy palette was simply a nice touch, and I would have bought it even if it was housed in the “standard” Lancome plastic.
On the whole, I really don’t care for “special” packaging, as I prefer my stash to be housed in an orderly manner, and it’s easier to sort when brands stay more uniform. I can also tell at a glance what a product os if they look the same all the time. As much as I love NARS, and the palettes are a far better value, one reason I pass & buy individual products is because storage then becomes an issue!
Probably the Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary Pop Up Party Palette! The packaging was SO insanely cute, I just couldn’t resist. I was expecting the shadows to be horrible, but almost all of them turned out decent to great, and there are some unique shades in there. It’s such a fun palette, it always brings a smile to my face when I look at it 🙂
I thought that was adorable too, but resisted. Glad the shadows worked out!
Me too! But I haven’t used the shadows! I just love looking at the box and the colors…..weird?
LOL….. I debated about not touching the shadows for a while, but
I couldn’t resist!
It hasn’t happened… YET. But come midnight of the 13th going into the 14th, it WILL. I fully intend to order MAC’S Morange lipstick, but in the Wash and Dry packaging, because I really love both the packaging and the lipstick! Also, going for a lipglass from that collection too.
Haha I’m planning on getting Morange then too!! 😀
Did not have to think hard to answer that one. MAC Lorelei eye shadow from Alluring Aquatics collection last year. Our local MAC store set such crazy prices for this collection (shelled out $30 for this shadow, everything else was also proportionately more expensive, compared to the US) that I almost walked out without buying anything in protest, despite waiting like crazy for a couple of months for it to come here!!
I have to say that usually I will not buy a product solely because I like its packaging, especially, if it means it will cost more (point in case – MAC LE stuff), but then again, I will not buy a product if I find its packaging looks cheap or flimsy or smth of that sort.
Benefit Rockateur! Before that…anything Kat Von D.
Confession? Now that MAC has changed its packaging I’m steering away from it.
I’ve only ever bought a product for the packaging once: Guerlain Terra Inca Sublime Radiant Powder. I don’t use bronzers, but I loved the wooden packaging so much I had to have it. And wouldn’t you know, it became one of my favourite products.
Probably something by Anna Sui forever ago…
A Burberry eyeshadow – I’m so glad it didn’t turn out to be a dud (and is one of my favorites!).
I buy the majority of the items because of packaging and style.
The most pretty one was from Harrods when I bought the Guerlain Wulong and Christian Dior holiday- not sold in U.S. one year later after Guerlain discontinued it. The price was less for the Guerlain item too. I have other pretty pieces, bug this one stands out.
I don’t think I’ve ever bought a product because of the packaging because to me, makeup is more about the product than about packaging. I guess I’m from a different age but it always surprises me to see people putting things like shopping bags – paper shopping bags – “on display” as if to boast “Look at me – I was able to buy something at the Dior boutique….” The only time “packaging” is an issue for me is for things like Naked on the Run or the new MUFE Artist Palettes – where it’s a case of having stuff in a really practical package. But I don’t care much what it looks like; I care more about it being functional.
Givenchy Le Rouge Couture Edition
MAC Alluring Aquatic lipstick, which I lost 🙁
I typically only care about packaging when it comes to skincare. I buy a Reb moisturizer because it comes in a pump. I could probably find something comparable with a lower price, but I am a sucker for skincare in pumps. I do like my Sunday Riley bottle; it’s not a pump, but I like not having to worry about it tipping over or breaking. It has a low center of gravity.
I think the packaging of Bésame lipstick is also very vintage and elegant!! 🙂
Too Faced Sweetheart Blush
Same here 😀 I got the Wash & Dry make-up pouch.
Weirdly I thought I would have at least a few high end items that I’d bought mainly for packaging or status but I could find anything when I went through my stash – I think I buy things more to “collect”.
Like I loved the RBR Colourburst lipsticks and when they were reformulated I bought every colour in the old formula even though I wouldn’t wear all the shades, I just liked the product that much.
MAC Toledo Collection Lipstick in Oxblood. NOT SORRY! I love it!!
MAC Oxblood lipstick from the Toledo collection. I only wanted Ripe Peach but I really loved the packaging so I decided to get a lipstick too. Thankfully, I ended up loving the color. It’s such a pretty nude on me
I don’t buy anything just because of the packaging. But, good packaging does boost my want to buy. But, I would rather buy a good performing product that lowers their cost to the consumer by not using flashy packaging. ColourPop is an example of that. But, awesome packaging or not,am still going to go by product performance. My favorite packaging so far that I can think of Mac alluring aquatic. I wish I could have snagged more of it! 🙂
MAC’s Toledo Collection with the matte white w/ black packaging. Super cute but hard to keep clean if you carry them with you in your purse.
A few items from the MAC Simpsons collection.
Haven’t bought it yet, but I’m veeerry tempted to buy MAC Freshen Up solely because I like the packaging so much. I don’t need it, I don’t think it would be the best colour on me, and if it was in ordinary MAC packaging, I would definitely pass, but that packaging’s really getting to me! It remains to be seen if I cave and suffer any subsequent buyer’s remorse. 🙂
The Chanel Lumiere D’Ete bronzing powder. I barely even swatched it before purchasing it. I’m really glad it’s a good product! 😀
Probably MAC’s Bao Bao Wan collection. I couldn’t resist the rubberized glittery bronze packaging! I also can’t wait for MAC’s Wash & Dry dang it! 😉
I’ve never bought anything because of the packaging BUT I have passed on buying things because of the packaging.
Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial L’eau Si Sensuelle – oh God long name! I love the fluffy feather necklace on the bottle.
I fell hard for the Too-Faced SweetHeart Blush. I think that is the only time I really bought just because the packaging was so dang cute. Turns out, it is one of my favorite, go-to blushes for the spring and summer.
Essence Princess mascara – it’s in the queue to try, hope it’s a winner!
The Sailor Moon “Miracle Romance” eyeliner. My favorite show from my teen years, plus a really good eyeliner? How was I supposed to say no to that?
MAC Toledo lipstick in Barbecue…I bought Ripe Peach and loved the packaging so much I had to have a lipstick from the collection, I’m glad I got Barbecue though as it is such a beautiful orange red color and so fun for spring and summer!
The NARS Christopher Kane gloss in Mezmer. I bought it because of the name- I play a mesmer in an online video game. 😮
Before that it was probably the 1oz Stella perfume. I love the scent but probably wouldn’t have purchased it but the 1oz packaging is so beautiful, like a little gemstone.
I almost never buy just for packaging alone, and certainly nothing expensive. I think the most recent was the e.l.f. Frozen stuff from Walgreen’s. I got the makeup book, eye palette and cheek trio, but I liked the colors and use them, so it wasn’t just for packaging. I would have passed if the colors were blah or terrible quality.
I haven’t bought anything for packaging ever 🙁
I’ve never bought anything because of packaging…. It would have to be something I really really loved for me to do that. Product is always first for me, unless the package is faulty or terribly inconvenient.
Too faced la creme lipsticks!
HOLY CRAP THE GIVENCHY CONFETTI FACE POWDER
It legit makes me look disgustingly oily and the main ingredient is freakin talc but the little rainbow balls in the lid are so adorable that it’s just like “lol take my money” *cries*
Guerlain’s Meteorites, the one in the gold case with the bow and red pouf.
Honestly, I’m gonna buy the Steam Heat lipstick from Mac wash and dry. It’s a red lipstick from Mac, so it can’t be terrible. And that packaging!
Hmm. The packaging can be a factor in *not* buying a product, but is usually just a bonus if I’m getting something – it’s nice to have, but not why I buy it. The only things I can think of that were exceptions to the rule are the Sephora x Disney Little Mermaid eyeshadow palette, and recently, a poppy powder brush at the Body Shop. Both of these were actually good products, but I would have bought them anyway precisely because of the packaging, as both are connected to stuff that’s important to me.
Those are all I can think of!
Only did it once – bought one of the lipsticks from the MAC Rocky Horror collection 🙂
MAC Cinderella lipstick in Free as a butterfly. It’s so cute, I had to!
I’ve never bought any product based on the packaging. My nemesis is YouTube, which has led me into cosmetic temptation many, many times.
YSL eyeshadow palette. The compact is covered in pink crystals. Sparkly and pink…I had to have it. (The shadow is nice, but the compact is the bomb)
MAC Sin lipstick from the RHPS collection (also got Frank-N-Furter lipstick and Crazed Imagination blush, but those were limited shades I wanted). I could have just gotten the regular tube for $1.50 cheaper, but went for the limited packaging anyway.
The Too Faced Carousel for Christmas 2014. I thought it was so cute and original.
I don’t buy a makeup item because of its packaging – it’s the product that counts. After all, you throw the packaging away.
Only a few times. I bought the Tokidoki Royal Pride Hercolino palette a while back mostly for the art work. Same for the Urban Decay Vegan palette. Lately though, it’s mostly about the product. If I’m sort of on the fence about something, like the Kat Von D Studded Lipstick in Wonderchild, the packaging can tip me over.
I would have to say thebalm’s Nude Tude palette. Think it’s super cute!
The Two Faced Cat Eyes palette. It was worth it because… cats. =) The actual product? Meh. I think I’ve only used the palette three times and I wasn’t impressed when I did use it. It’s more of a novelty item for me.
I think mine was the Too Faced Soulmates Blushing Bronzer in Ross & Rachel. Not only I bought for the packaging but also the name was cute considering that I love Friends. It’s an amazing product, I love it!
The MAC Toledo 129SE brush. I was looking for a compact brush for my handbag and loved that this came in its own little bag. I am a very organized person and separate everything in my handbag into little makeup bags so I always know where everything is.
The Tarte Rainforest After Dark palette. Love the product, but the gorgeous packaging completely had me.
2 blushes and 2 lipsticks from the Mac Toledo collection
Becca Shimmering Copper Blush – a back up LOL
ANY Urban Decay palettes…..I’m obsessed! I have some of the most unique and rarest UD palettes that I will never use just because the packaging is so beautiful!
some TokiDoki lipglosses from sephora 500 years ago. They were decent glosses, I was just so into the packaging. And even though I am almost 30, I still buy those lip balms shaped/flavored like soda. Not the best balms I have, they’re just fun and put me in a good mood!
I’ve honestly never bought any product based on packaging. I’m more interested on the product inside! I’ve been surprised by nifty packaging on some well loved products, though it wasn’t a factor when I bought it. 🙂
A YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick (#11 Rose Culte)
It turned out o be a lovely color and formula but i recommend to use a liner to prevent bleeding.
Wow, been quite some time already: MAC Alluring Aquatic bronzer – I know!
I’m thinking back to Tokidoki x Sephora products. I got a lot of cute things since then, but that’s not why I bought them. Maybe the Dior quint can count? It wasn’t the packaging per se, it was the whole “Dior thing.”
Oooh, was just reading the comments and was reminded of the elf Ariel stuff! That’s a winner for this question.
