By Terry Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm
By Terry Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to hydrate, “fill in wrinkles and fine lines,” while also smoothing and “boost[ing] volume.” It is a tinted lip balm, in simpler terms, with semi-sheer color coverage, glossy finish, and designed to keep your lips looking and feeling better. Overall, the formula is moderately hydrating and comfortable to wear with a creamy consistency that has enough slip that it doesn’t cling, but it doesn’t glide right off the lips either. I didn’t notice an increase in volume, and it didn’t seem like it helped to fill in lines, but the hydration did linger beyond the initial application. The formula is rose-scented and a slight, almost perfume-y taste. They’re also shorter-wearing, which isn’t a real surprise, but you’ll likely need to reapply throughout the day to maintain the color.
By Terry Bare Balm (1) Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a very light, pale pinkish-white with light shine and cool undertones. It had semi-sheer color coverage that applied somewhat evenly. Though the formula is supposed to help fill in fine lines, it seemed weakest in that aspect, and the very light color of this shade settled into lip lines as it wore. On me, this shade lasted for two and a half hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
By Terry Innocent Kiss (2) Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a soft, peach with a hint of pink and lighter beige shimmer. It had semi-sheer color payoff with noticeable translucency, so if your natural lip colors are darker, you may find this looks a bit different. It applied evenly and smoothly, and it wore well for three hours with very minor settling into lip lines. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
By Terry Nude Pulp (3) Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a muted, light-medium pink with warm undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. This shade yielded semi-sheer color coverage that was very even and smooth–it looked like a stain but still had the balm-like shine. It lasted for two hours on me, which was the major downside, but the slightly thinner consistency (compared to other shades) kept it from having color that settled into lip lines. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
By Terry Sheer Glow (4) Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a peachy-orange with warm, yellow undertones and a very fine dusting of gold pearl. It had sheer color coverage–the least pigmented of the five–with a glossy finish and comfortable, hydrating wear. On me, it lasted for two hours and tended to sit in lines. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
By Terry Flush Contour (5) Hyaluronic Sheer Nude Hydra-Balm ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a medium-dark brown with warm, copper-red undertones and a light shine. It had semi-sheer pigmentation that went on fairly evenly and smoothly. The formula was comfortable to wear, moderately hydrating, while the color wore for three hours. See comparison swatches/ compare dupes side-by-side.

I think I might like these.
Yay!
I quite like the idea because it’s not everyday that we want full on color and would rather stick with something a little on the sheer side. They do remind me of Revlon’s lip butters though, which I’m a huge fan of.
These are more hydrating with me, and probably the biggest noticeable difference initially is these don’t have as much slip, but the Revlon Lip Butters are certainly a good alternative!
These look nice but if I’m going to spend $40 on a lip balm I need it to be amazing. The formula just seems okay. I’ll stick to my Nivea balms. I’ve been obsessed with them lately
I really wish this DID smooth out the lips/fill in lines!
I like #4. But seems kinda pricey for basically a tinted balm. Maybe Revlon lip butters are pretty close without the scent and taste? I’ve not really been too impressed with many By Terru products that I’ve been able to try and find them over priced. I feel like she tends to promise a bit more than she can actually deliver unfortunately.
If the formula had more smoothing/filling power, I think it could have been interesting.
How disappointing that they got such a low grade. I always expect the higer end brands to get A or A+.
I’ve never tried anything by By Terry, will not start with these.
They’re really hydrating, but they just don’t hit the mark on the other claims as well!
oh not you too Christine! I’ve been trying to avoid looking at too many reviews of By Terry as it’s so very expensive where I live. One of these days I’ll splurge.
Is there any place By Terry isn’t expensive? lol! ๐
ah very true, but these balms retail for $54 here and I draw the line at spending that much on a tinted balm. Are you going to review any other items from the brand? I’ve been looking at their Densiliss foundation for yonks but I haven’t been able to travel to a counter and swatch it (and given that it’s $154 a bottle, no way I’m going to wing it with shade selection) but it’s quite well reviewed.
$54? Ouch ๐ I haven’t tried any of her base products!
I really wish her lip products weren’t so *intensely* rose-scented…
Me too, Alix!
I love Nude Pulp! Such a pretty color. I just can’t get into the high end sheer barely-there balms for $36. I would probably buy YSL Sheer Candy first because I would get more product. Too much for a balm for me unless the balm is some kind of amazing. For a B, nah… I am happy to just wear my Jack Black or Blistex and dab a tiny bit of lipstick I already have on top and there’s my sheer color with hydration ๐
Good idea, Olivia! ๐ I liked these more than Sheer Candy, but I had zero luck with Sheer Candy and I know a lot of people love them, so it’s probably just me!
Yes, LOL, that’s what I do! My lips dry out easily and are very sensitive to sun, so I always have to wear SPF lipbalm. And since a lot of lipsticks and glosses don’t have any SPF, I just dot a little bit of lipstick, put some SPF balm on top, and it instantly becomes a gloss or tinted lip balm.
The only one I like is Flush, but I’m not paying $36 for a tinted lip balm. The others are way too sheer for me
They’re definitely a sheerer product intentionally, but I can totally see why you’d prefer more color!
Don’t quite see the point of these, especially if you need to keep re-applying and they’re short wearing. Plenty of other good tinted balms out there in the market.
True of every price point ๐
I have this love/hate thing with By Terry. Some of the formulas are outstanding but OH that smell!!! I’ve said this many times before but it’s worth repeating: her version of touche รฉclat is light-years ahead of YSL’s (which she helped develop) in terms of texture. But the rose perfume that’s added is SO strong that it actually burned my skin when I used it. Of course not everyone has that reaction (if they did I’m sure the product would be re-formulated) but why?! Why does it need to smell THAT strongly?!
Regarding these though, I think they all look very flattering on you! Every one looks fantastic! It could just be that you have the kind lips that would look make Carmex look good though LOL
I bought her potted lip balm, but the scent of roses is so strong (much like Dior), and though I can appreciate some love it… it is usually more than I can handle since it never goes away!
The only nice thing about her rose scent is that it smells very “natural” in terms of the quality of the fragrance. It’s not too synthetic. But she needs to calm down with it! It’s just too much and you’re right… it NEVER goes away!
Good point! But boy, you really have to love your rose! The rose scent in these didn’t seem quite as strong as the lip balm, but it’s definitely noticeable.
I find that a lot of french brands (Chanel, Dior and skincare such as Daphin and Caudalie) will use rose scents in their makeup and skincare, but I believe that it’s due to the rose fields outside of Paris (my memory is spotty on this) and rosewater is a VERY popular skincare item for french women and has been for many years.
It probably doesn’t help that rose is one of my lesser favorite smells… LOL
Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be shelling out almost $40 for a lip balm… They look pretty, though!
I like the coverage level for a tinted lip balm, but I wish they did more of what they said!
These are a bit too sheer for my tastes and therefore run too expensive for what they are.
I really wish they smoothed more, then I think you could start justifying the price.
These are nice, but I think the strong rose scent would annoy me after a while. I have a foundation of hers, and the fragrance bugs me every time because it lingers for hours!
On a side note, your eyes are fun and fabulous!
Thanks, Christina! ๐
If they did smooth out lines and wrinkles, I’d be all over them. But at 36$ with a perfume-y taste, it’s a big no-no.
I totally agree – those are two big misses.
These are obviously suppose to be sheer but for $36 I think I’d want something that had a little more WOW to it!
Totally understand!
Thank you so much for mentioning scent and taste! Anything strongly scented is a huge turn-off for me since it gives me terrible headaches, so I really appreciate it! <3
I just can’t see spending $36 on a tinted lip balm, much less one that doesn’t seem to do what it advertises. The rose scent and perfumey taste would be deal-breakers for me, even if they did work better.
I like the color of Nude Pulp!
The Revlon lip butters are amazing and 9$. I will stick to those. I can’t justify spending nearly $40 on a sheer anything… ๐ I feel like the marketing claims for so many high end brands promise so much and rarely deliver. That’s why I LOVE your HONEST reviews. I feel like so many other bloggers gush on and on about everything.
Way too sheer for me… I like a strong, bold lipstick colour.
So funny that you just reviewed these: my friend and I were discussing how much we hate By Terry in general. I purchased one of their lipsticks off SpaceNK — I couldn’t find any swatches of it online. I not only disliked the color (which I’m not blaming the brand for) but I had the formula, the smell, and the packaging. For $50 a lipstick, I expect to be wowed. The lipstick I purchased was such a disappointment…. I wish you had reviewed the lipsticks so I could have steered clear of them. (I’m 100% confident you would’ve given them a terrible review. They are awful.)
I may end up trying one of these! I am a balm addict and need to switch off! ๐
Keep me posted if you try it!
Well, Innocent Kiss should be here sometime this coming week! I’m looking forward to it and will update you again after I use it! ๐
Awesome ๐
Ok. Pros: Super soothing and hydrating. Base product is AMAZING! (That went well! Perfect color) BUT this damn Innocent Kiss is SO FROSTY like on dehydrated senior citizens in Miami type of look! Is there one that’s more SHEER/Clear? Without the pot, in this format? And does barneys accept returns on items tried? I’d love to keep but seems I need a jelly see through in this formula, no frost! A recommendation, please? Thank you! Omg! Can I do ANYTHING with my lips?!!! So frustrated! Lipstick Queen Queen Bee was worse. Garish, unsightly, grainy, frosty, and not cohesive to my lip color at all! I just want a damn tube of ultra hydration! Is that SO hard? Rant done. ๐ maybe Willfull by Tf would work though I do like this by Terry one, just not this color. UIUUUUGGGHGHH!!!!!!
(By Terry Cover Expert in shade 1 fair suits well, which was the base product.) seriously.., I felt like Magda from There’s Something About Mary! I put a thick oil over it to make it a bit less noticble.. ๐
Well, the base is perfect though it could be a tad lighter and pinker. I think I’ll add the By Terry Terrybly Densiless foundation in fairly light, as it’s a pale pink and more of a serum, which create a lovely match together! And yes, the primers, serums, all, are worth the price. Le Mรฉtier de Beauty Peau Verge in the lightest shade is s great primer/tint to mix in as well. Worth the price. Unless your skin lets you wear anything. Mine doesn’t.
Thanks so much for sharing! ๐
Innocent Kiss is the most shimmery of the shades – the rest are more of a sheen than full shimmer. Bare Balm seems to have the second most shimmer. Nude Pulp is kind of similar in color to Innocent Kiss but with less frost!
