What was the last product that let you down?

ColourPop’s Super Star Loose Pigments; I don’t mind the concept, but I don’t think they should be marketed to be used dry at all… I think they must be used wet to really work well, and in a way, their Super Shock Shadows and Pressed Powder Shadows are just so much easier to use that the loose take on eyeshadow seemed unnecessary.

Probably the Marc Jacobs Edgitorial palette. It was so ugly on me and I actually returned it (a rarity for me). I’m on the fence with MAC’s Waterweight Concealer too….some days, it is fine but on others, it’s dreadful and I have to remove it and start again…

Erica Avatar

Hmmm interesting about the MAC Waterweight concealer. I surprisingly really like the foundation which I thought wouldn’t work on my oily skin. It’s a bummer that the concealer may not be as good. What skintype do you have and why doesn’t it work?

That’s the weird thing…sometimes, it works well and others, it looks so bad – it goes sort of “clotted” looking, if that makes any sense. Colour selection wasn’t great for me either…I chose NW20 because when the SA tried NW15 on me, it looked waaay too ghostly and white but when I got home, I realized it was probably because she used way too much product (you seriously need only the tiniest touch of the stuff, rather than even pumping out a drop of it from the dropper). I went back to get a sample of NW15 and actually think I like it better but, again, it’s so iffy as to whether it will work or not from one day to the next and my under-eye circles are stressful enough without this added “risk factor”.

Benefit Bad Gal Bang mascara. It was bad. It clumped like crazy and the formula was so wet it smudged on my eyelids. I wanted to return it but sadly it was over 30 days. This is the first time I considered returning a beauty product

I almost bought this a couple times, based on the reviews I’ve read, but I successfully talked myself out of it. I think I’m over it now.

I really have no reason to try a new foundation because I already have a holy grail. I just get caught up in the excitement of trying new products sometimes.

I can think of a whole bunch of lipsticks I’ve bought over the past several months that fit this question, the most recent being MAC Kinda Sexy. I loved it when I was buying it, but after catching a glimpse of myself several times over the course of the day the first time I wore it, I just couldn’t understand how I thought it would be a good shade for me. It’s definitely a “What was I thinking?” purchase.

Kat Von D Mini Matte Pallet… I heard very good things and the colors looked pretty. Let’s just say the metals were hard to work with. Even Thunderstruck, which people rave over! The matte colors are barely pigmented at all. And the colors don’t create a cohesive look on me. I was really disappointed, since I love the Saint/Sinner pallet and most of the liquid lipsticks. I made the mistake of trying it on my wedding day after watching a few Youtube tutorials from patrons who were probably sent the pallet for free. I still love the brand, just not a fan of this eyeshadow pallet.

The most recent to come to mind is the Benefit Bad Girl Bang mascara. I was so hoping this would be a great mascara and all it did was clump and flake. I didn’t return it but gave it to my daughter to try and she hated it also. I also picked up the Viseart Eye Shadow primer and was hopeful that it would have a smoothing effect on the eyelids but it wasn’t and it creased and shadows did not perform well with that primer. I am back to the Milani and like it so much better.

Okay, so this question being posted today of all days is….just ironic. Last night, after trying on 2 WL highlighters for comparison, I went with the Hourglass Gold Flash VANISHING Highlighter. Looked gorgeous in-store! Got home and it had practically lived up to part of its name: it had all but VANISHED. My cheeks had eaten it up inside of around 2-3 hours. I’m so sad because I had been waiting for this sale to justify buying it, and apparently, something went terribly wrong. ( Was it my Lancôme Teint Idole foundation mixed with MJ Dew You Coconut Highlighter??? Or my actual skin underneath???) ?

I couldn’t wait for Urban Decay’s Backtalk palette to be released because I loved the color scheme! OMG I was so disappointed with the pigmentation and longevity of the product I had to return it , big let down!! Also sorry I brought the Dose of Colors Sienna palette. It’s powdery and monotoned, not to mention I have several dupes of those colors. Got suckered in due to the Ulta sale and hype.

Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Stick in Orchid. I don’t know if they changed the formula or something but my problem is with the glitter in it that falls all over the face. I haven’t seen/read about this issue. The colour is gorgeous. Swatched on my arm, it looks creamy. Once applied on my lids though, the glitter particles become so obvious, they almost separate from the cream base and fall around the eye, on the face. They are also difficult to remove from the face as they tend to stick to the skin. I apply this creamy eyeshadow and then I gently pat with my finger. The only way I found to make it work is by applying a matte shadow on top of it (I’m using Chanel 45 Quartz, a light pink), that will somehow seal it.

Karen Avatar

I just used my Orchid shade the other day for the first time in months and had no glitter issue at all. You may be right about a formula change or even a batch difference though, my stick is about a year and a half, maybe almost two years old-at least that’s when I purchased it. I’m glad you said something though because I am about due to replace mine and I certainly don’t want any glitter issues…so Thank you!

Nicole D Avatar

Thank you Karen! Reading your comment I’m 100% is a bad batch issue. I bought mine at the end of February this year (online order at Sephora CA), tried it on my eyes when I received it and I said to myself that maybe that’s happening with the first application (although my other four LM caviar sticks apply like a dream). I didn’t pay attention and 30 days passed and I couldn’t return it anymore. I tried it four-five times but the glitter falls right away. Forget about using a brush, as the glitter will spread everywhere on the face. So applying a thin layer and patting gently with my ring finger seems to be the solution. Still have glitter under the eye though, but at least is contained to that area. I watched tutorials on YT and no one had this issue. Double-check if you buy one.

Thanks to Temptalia and other good blogs, I don’t buy misses very often. I think the last one was Kat von D Woolf from the gray mini trio. I tried it again yesterday, and I still hate it. It’s really thin and patchy, and it doesn’t layer over itself worth sh*t. I’ve never had an Everlasting Liquid Lipstick even remotely that bad before.

It Cosmetics CC Cream. It smells horrible and it broke up everything on my face. HATED it and it’s the only item in a very long time I have returned. Highly overrated and the shade range is strange. I’m typically a light in most brands but I had to get fair bc light was too dark.

Kendra Avatar

That was mine too. I like the scent but it just doesn’t look natural on me. It sits on my skin weirdly. I should have stuck with Supergoop’s CC Cream. That was my favorite.

Erica Avatar

Supergoop huh? I’ve actually been loving a Bobbi Brown BB Cream. It works 1000 times better than the It Cosmetics CC Cream. Looks beautiful on the skin, doesn’t make me super oily, doesn’t disturb anything else I’ve worn and has pretty decent SPF coverage. The shade range is much better too!

Cheryl Avatar

Kay von d shade and light palette. And one of her sparkly eyeshadow singles, it was horrible and the glitter separated from the shadow and ithe shadow wouldn’t show up at all. The palette was ok only, only one color looked ok on me. I’ve not had good luck with her products.

Alterna’s hair growth products. They have red clover which is a hormone disruptor, and I ended up growing dark facial hairs within 2 months of starting using it. It did spur some baby hairs on my hairline, but not worth the side effects!

Genevieve Avatar

It’s been a long time since I had a bad miss – thanks to Temptalia, so my eyeshadows are all good.
The last miss I had was with foundation awhile ago when I bought the Rimmel Long lasting foundation and it was so thick that I discarded it after a couple of tries.

I’ve only had a problem with one item recently, IGK 30,000 Feet Volume Powder Spray, it was like glue in my hair. I was hosting a dinner at my house the guests were arriving and I could hardly get a comb through my hair. Somehow I did something close to a hairstyle and returned the crap to the store.

Bonnie Avatar

The Tarte Toasted palette. Barely lasted an hour on the eyelids WITH primer and setting spray. I’ve gotten bargain no-name shadow palettes at Christmas at Walgreens that perform better than this $46 for 12 shades palette.

So disappointing, since it was so pretty.

WetnWild Photo Focus foundation and I live WetnWild most everything but this was awful! It stuck in every little visible thing on my face I had no idea I had. Lol! I returned. So bad! Another one I tried was a Pacifica foundation omg! It was a hot oily mess on the contrary so yucky and gooey no! No! No! That thing was a bucket of oil. Lol! So much for experimenting.
