What brands have you liked in the past that you no longer use now?
What brands have you liked in the past that you no longer use now? Any particular reason you no longer use that brand?
Before blogging, I really only used MAC, which I still use! Over time, it just seems like I use more and more brands so I might use each brand less than I originally did but not because I don’t like them any more!
Thanks to Andrea for today’s question! Got a question idea? Submit yours here.
Although I still use the MAC I have, I’m finding myself less and less inclined to buy it, probably due to so many disappointing LE launches and just the sheer variety of awesome products available out there 🙂
I used to absolutely adore e.l.f., but now that I have discovered other brands, my love has faded. It’s just not very good compared to a bunch of other brands!
Same here!!! MAC is great, but there are so many other brands out there waiting for me to discover them! 🙂
I sued to love Lancome and some other L’Oreal owned brands. Not so much anymore since there are plenty of good brands which don’t use animal testing.
I quote every single word of your comment! 🙂
Thanks. 🙂 Even the “sue” typo?
lollll
Same Here 🙂
Same brands and same reason 🙂
Oh my, Lime Crime fits perfectly into this category. Used to think they were fantastic. Now, not so much.
Ditto on the Lime Crime. I was sad to see them featured in my BUST magazine as a “green” lipstick to buy, particularly since their are more ecologically responsible brands then LC.
I used to use Clinique faithfully, with some Benefit thrown in. Then when I was a high school senior, I switched to Chanel. Now I still wear Chanel, but I also wear MAC, Chantecaille, Urban Decay, Laura Mercier, Korres, Bare Escentuals ELF, etc etc etc!
Kiehls
Kiehls used to be amazing! I couldn’t believe it when they reformulated all the products and still kept the same names:( I don’t even look at their stuff anymore.
Hi! I love your blog. I’m brazilian (learning english!), so before i ready international blogs talking about makeup i only use national products, your and others amazing blogs open my mind, now i try a lot of brands and build a dupe list to know what i repeat and what i’ll never use again! Kisses. Layna
Thank you, Layna!
Pretty much MAC. I used to convince myself that I have to buy something from EVERY collection. A lot of their stuff doesn’t amuse me anymore and I still use it but very little. I find myself using more stuff from Sephora.
Clinique and The Face Shop (Korean Brand)
The general switch from using mainly drugstore brands to now using mainly higher end brands…guess it’s part of the experimentation process and ‘cos I can actually afford them now.
Clinique. I’ve found that I don’t actually like their products very much.
Nars….had the lipsticks, tried the loose powder, and a bunch of eyeshadows. Then realized IF you dont use the lipsticks for awhile, it turns rancid, it becomes sticky and dont perform well. I even bought them in duplicates. As a teen I bought Clinique faithfully, but now I want more color. Also, as a teen I bought Chanel when Chanel came to the US in the 70’s but then it got too expensive when it raise the price yearly and no longer was made in France.
Before discovering MAC, I used strictly drugstore brands. I still enjoy them but for eye shadow and many lip colors, it is 99% MAC.
As it seems to be trending, I am far less likely to purchase from MAC after getting too many sub par products. I used to use L’oreal mascara and eyeliner a lot more but now I’m branching out. I used to use POP beauty and Lola quite a bit as well and now not at all. Oh and I was huge on NARS blushes but the heat has definitely gone out of the relationship.
I use to love Clinique skin care products, but not so much now I stop using their products about 4yrs. now
I used to wear Oriflame and Avon almost exclusively, because they fit my student budget at the time. However, while I’m still willing to buy from them, I don’t really like the party-selling system they do, so I just end up never buy their stuff anymore.
I loved Red Earth but can no longer find them anywhere, so I guess that counts?
Oh, I think I haven’t bought anything from Maybelline or L’Oreal in nearly ten years as well… They keep raising their prices while their quality stays in the “eh” area for me. I thought I might as well get higher end products instead. ^^;
RIP red earth. They had some fantastic stuff… I loved their liquid highlighters!!!
Hard Candy. I still have some of their eyeshadows but since their relaunch at Wal-Mart I just can’t be convinced they have the same quality. But I’ve also become spoiled by Chanel, Guerlain, Urban Decay, etc. My style of makeup has changed a lot too, so I can’t strongly say I’d still be purchasing them anyway.
Smashbox – it’s not that I don’t like the brand any more, it’s that nothing really intrigues me enough to buy it.
Aveda – they used to make eyeshadow in fun, bright-yet-wearable tones, not so much anymore 🙁
I have to say I’m losing the love I once had for MAC, especially I discovered Inglot, Sugarpill, and rediscovered my Ben Nye palette – they just reminded me of what makeup could be – and are all in relatively the same price range (actually slightly less expensive 🙂 ) I have been doing a lot of “shopping my collection” this year and have found that a lot of the colors MAC launched – I had something close enough to it, that it would be a waste to buy another and a good 80% or so, if there was something I wanted from a collection, I went to Temptalia to check it out first, and would see that the pigmentation was off, or the texture, or something else. On one hand it makes me sad that the quality has really gone down, but on the other hand, I’ve been itching to branch out to other brands, and there’s no time like the present.
I stay away from all brands owned by L’Oreal (including Lancome) as well as MAC because I’m not a huge fan of how they run their business. I don’t flat out boycott them but will only buy a product that I *really* love. I only purchased two MAC items in the last two years and one Lancome and one Armani item – nothing from L’Oreal or other companies that belong to L’Oreal. I’m really rather bummed that Armani belongs to L’Oreal, they make some pretty nice stuff.
I prefer brands that don’t release 20 new collections each month, don’t make completely retarded and illogical claims and don’t retouch their advertisement material too much. As a result I mainly use Becca, Illamasqua and a couple of other smaller brands.
I really believe that the only way to stop that kind of stuff is to let our money speak – I certainly won’t go around preaching and annoy people telling them what to buy or what not to buy, in my opinion that decision is up to everyone themselves.
The body shop. When it was first launched, I loved it.The products are natural and works. Now, esp after Loreal bought over TBS, the products are no longer the same. They became commerical and harsh. Cleansing milk sting my face, body scrub cause rashes, lipdelicious not moisturizing, at least not enough for my dry lips.
I used to LOVE the Body Shop but their skinc are was subpar and I learned that Roddick basically ripped off the concept from Body Time, a California based store.
L’Oreal and Maybelline because I know for sure that they test on animals. Not sure about any other brands though.
When I was in highschool I used to buy almost exclusively Bourjois and the funny thing is that since I hadn’t used high end brands yet, I thought the pigmentation of their baked eyeshadows (or the lack of it) was normal!! Then of course I discovered UD and finally woke up in the real world – and wonerland at the same time. 🙂
There’s no brand that I specifically don’t use anymore, especially since I’m fairly new to cosmetics culture, though I will say I’ve shifted away from Revlon’s matte lipsticks. I used to love them, but their newer formula dries me out.
Estee Lauder, Dior and Lancome were my mainstays for makeup and skin care but I don’t use any of them now, though I think I might treat myself to Dior’s Rose Diamond or Amber Diamond in the next while (not sure which of the 2 I’ll actually prefer).
Nars. The fallout from their eyeshadows!
I don’t know if the brand is a international brand, but when I was younger I always used products of MissSporty. It is in The Netherlands a very cheap brand, but the products aren’t good quality.
Ahaha oh my god I remember Miss Sporty. That was the first make up brand I ever used.
I bought lots of MAC items over the last 10 years. Over the last year I try other brands and I like the YSL lipsticks, the Chanel Bronzing Cream and the MUFE HD Foundation.
I still use my MAC eye shadows, but I am fed up with several limited editions over the years. So other brands become more interesting.
I used to buy and use CoverGirl powder constantly, but these days, I don’t wear powder much. My skin is a lot dryer than it was in high school/college.
I used to use Clinique and cornsilk in high school but Ive grown out of it or something; now I use UD, Stila, BE, Tarte, Benefit, etc etc!
I used to use everything except MAC, but now I use MAC almost exclusively with some Benefit and a little drugstore here and there. Clinique, Lancome, Estee Lauder and Chanel have all fallen off my radar.
I was a big Clinique user up until a few years ago. I’ve slowly replaced all of my Clinique with other brands, more because I wanted to try something new than out of any real dissatisfaction with the products.
I started out with Clinique and was faithful to the line for many years until I got sucked into the Mary Kay vortex. I was on that downward spiral for several years unfortunately. Now the only thing I use from either of those is the Clinique DD moisturizing gel in the morning under my makeup and the neutral lip liner from MK that I still have 2 of.
Lancome, Estee Lauder
I used to buy Maybelline and L’Oreal religiously, but I’m now trying to phase out products by companies that test on animals. So no more Maybelline or L’Oreal for me.
I must say Lush, I used to be so obsessed with it I even worked there, but today – not so much. I have a few products I adore, but I don’t buy anymore. Not worth the money.
I, also, use to be very big on Clinique. I still use the 3 step facial cleansers everyday, twice a day. But I’ve pretty much moved on from their other products since venturing into the world of MAC, Urban Decay and the likes.
Bare minerals! Or at least the foundation. I developed a bismuth allergy while using it is my guess. I used to like it, but one day my face just absolutely burned after putting it on. I thought maybe the brush had somehow warped and was scratching me, so I bought a new one… nope. Still hurt. Tried the matte formula, same problem. I would end up super duper oily after a few hours too.
I do have some of their loose shadows and blushes and veils, and I do use those on occasion!
MAC was the brand I first ventured into makeup with. I had used some bonnebelle shades in the past just because I didn’t really know what I was doing. One day at the mall though, I stopped at the MAC store and asked how to create a smokey eye. The employee walked me through, sold me a quad and the brushes I would need. Since then I have expanded to mainly Urban Decay, but some other brands as well. Whenever I try my MAC quad, I’m just not impressed. It just doesn’t have the pigment that I find from other brands. So I never use it.
I don’t think anyone mentioned Stila! I LOVED their products when they first launched. I thought the packaging was so cool, loved the variety of single pan eyeshadow colors and all of their brushes. They haven’t released any new, innovative products in years, especially eye shadow colors. Plus they jacked up their prices to a ridiculous amount. I think once Jeanine Lobell sold the company it changed for the worse.
One company I used and don’t at all any more is Origins.I think they are too expensive for what they offer. Back when I used it I liked their message, and thought they were a unique brand. However now that I’m more familiar with other brands I find there other brands who are better quality and eco-friendly for the same price point or cheaper, like Korres. I’m also still bitter at them for discontinuing their Fret Not line.
In high school, my favorite brand was Benefit…then in college, I became a MAC-aficionado. Now, I’m expanding my brand interest everyday! I like Illamasqua a lot though.
I think for me in MUFE. I love the products, but I was always drawn to their foundations because they suited my oily skin. As I have gotten older, my skin has changed and the formula is too drying on my skin. As far as everything else from them I am still the biggest fan.
When I was just starting out with makeup, I liked CoverGirl. Now I really don’t like any of their products, especially their eyeshadows. I used to also really like Benefit but they’ve disappointed me the past couple years as I discovered other makeup brands.
During my high school I’ve mostly used Inglot, Maybelline and L’oreal, now I’m in my early twenties and I’m totally MAC addict, although in my beauty box;) Benefit, Smashbox and Dior have their place. .
I liked Clinique, but now I prefer MAC and any type of brand with high color payoff. I figured Clinique is “too safe”– the colors are not as adventurous. Liked Urban Decay eyeshadows, but the fallout is ridiculous!
A few years ago, I was on an all natural kick so I bought a ton of everyday minerals and clinique. I heard that EDM dc’ed their intensive formula which was the one I used, so I don’t really shop there anymore.
I used to really enjoy many brands but I am underwhelmed lately. Here’s the thing. Most cosmetic companies seem to be into gimmicky or trendy packaging to sell their products and less into actually putting forth a quality product. I don’t feel like it used to be this way even a few years ago. Quite honestly, there really aren’t any just unbelievably awesome new products that have been launched in the last couple of years. It’s repackaging of the same stuff in something meant to catch your eye and often it seems as though the actual product has suffered in quality. For instance, palettes. These used to be my absolute favorite because some of them were just great. I used to love palette launches because they typically held the promise of something different. Now, across almost all of the brands, the palettes are full of played-out colors that I have multiples of. The UD Naked palette was decent, but that’s really the only one. Most of UD’s packaging is far too gimmicky, gigantic and not user friendly if you want to take it anywhere other than your bathroom. I used to love NARS palettes too, but they are unimpressive anymore. Too Faced…where do I start? How many bronzers does one actually need? MAC–their obsession with product launches has caused their quality to suffer and I don’t want to put forth any more money just to be disappointed in their latest circus show. Clinique is a yawn fest with their orange foundations and what seems like eighty versions of pink and purple eyeshadows, Sephora’s own line really isn’t as high-quality as you would expect. I have stopped purchasing anything unless I am really intrigued or it gets such rave reviews that I feel like I can’t like without it. As a makeup artist, I love products and I love experimenting but I am tired to death of throwing good money after bad at products that are sub-par or a repackage of the same old thing. Anymore, I would rather spend a little extra for something from a smaller indie company because at least they are still creating products out of love for creating products and wanting to be different.
Just curious, what brands do you like?
I agree with you about eyeshadow palettes. I would much rather buy individual colors. The product is what matters, not the packaging.
Smashbox, Origins and Clinique were my favorites starting out… now I don’t even really glance at them. It’s not that their products are bad, I just got bored with them. My first and always will be Lancome… I was never really enamoured with MAC so my opinion hasn’t really changed much.
I first really got into makeup when I discovered NYX. I loved that their products were so cheap and I thought they had a great range of colors. Since then, I’ve discovered some new favorites and NYX just cannot compare so I don’t use it anymore.
After reading some of the comments here about Lancome and Loreal testing on animals, I have decided to stop buying anything from those 2 brands. I will use up what I have but will not buy from them again.
I use to love maybelline, not anymore. Now i am more into Chanel and Bobbi Brown. The thing is…there is always someone to help me out on BB counter, while maybelline is just a drugstore product and quality can’t measure to BB.
My first love was Clinique. The products are boring and my cetaphil works better then Clinique’s 3 step. The past 3 years i noticed better brands from drug store to high end.
I used to be a huge fan of MAC when I was just getting into makeup. But now, they have started coming out with so many collections like every other month and I can’t keep up with it anymore since I’m only a student. I still adore most of their products though. However, I’ve slowly started to replace most of my MAC with other brands now.
I have really liked catrice in the past but since they remodeled their entire range last year I can’t wear their eye shadows any more. I get heavy allergic reactions to them and I can’t even seem to figure out what it is. I still use their face products, mascara and nail polishes.
Clinique was my first foray into the beauty world but that was years ago now I don’t have a single thing from them in my stash. Also Nars, I used to wear their lipsticks and glosses faithfully, now, not so much.
I used to use Lancome Juicy Tubes until I found out they test on animals. 🙁
Clinique! It was ALL I WORE for ten years. Now, I can’t stand it!
Stila. Even if you didn’t know its recent history, any regular user could tell when it changed from being run by a makeup artist to when it became just another brand owned by some investment company. Probably around the time it required you buy a separate pan for its eyeshadows. And the colors, products and quality dipped. Also Nars, mainly because the collections became less interesting. I often bought lots of each new collection but I’ll maybe buy just one new item each year. Although I do restock a number of the Nars classic products.
I used to use mainly Japanese drugstore brands but ever since I moved to the states I couldn’t have easy access to them anymore 🙁 now I use a lot of different brands and I don’t think I use one certain brand more over another.
Generally I don’t buy or use much drugstore make up now, whereas 4 years ago I wore nothing but drugstore make up. Then I started reading blogs… lol.
I used to be a Bare Escentuals fanatic mainly for its emphasis on using mineral and natural ingredients, but I got frustrated and tired of the mess that the products created every time I used it! I gave it up completely and never use anything that’s in loose powder form now.
After experimenting with so many brands, I realize that brand isn’t the most important factor…it’s really about finding which characteristics I like about a product, in order to find one I deem “good quality”.
Buuuut a couple of brands I no longer like: Silk Elements (hair), any topcoat I’ve tried because Seche Vite is MY FAVORITE, and I don’t really use Covergirl anymore ^_^
I use to be a hugh fan of rescue beauty lounge but since I have liked them on facebook… no so much… I have since been a fan of Zoya and love them soo much more! 🙂
Another brands is loreal, opi, essie, and rimmel… due to animal testing… but I am not sure if the uk own brands are going to change in the U.S. when the new regulation passes in the UK for animal testing… if that will effect us as well.. I hope so! 🙂
I used to love MAC but now I may use a lipstick from time to time, and I really haven’t been impressed with the brand overall to be perfectly honest.
I used to use a lot of the big drugstore brands like Rimmel and Maybelline, but nowadays I just walk past them unless something really catches my eye… and I don’t think they ever do. I just find that for drugstore there’s far better brands – like Sleek or Models Own – who are so much better quality.
MAC as well. I look about but nothing ever pulls me into spending the money that MAC wants for their products. And, to be honest, a lot of the counter girls at the MAC where I live wear far too much make up and it just makes me want to stay away.
I used to LOVE Benefit and Lancome, but then I found out that they do animal testing. Its sad cause they have so many amazing products.
I used to not care so much about cosmetic brands – I mostly used to use drug store brands and others like Mac and Estee Lauder here and there. But since developing my affinity (more like addiction hehe) for higher end brands, I don’t find myself shopping or looking around the drug store brands too much anymore unless I’m bored waiting for something else in the store, or if there’s something real snazzy I just have to check out!
I used to really love L’Oreal when I first got into make up, because it seemed, to me, to be the most “high end” of the drugstore brands in Australia. I’m not enamoured with MAC, and I always think that there are a lot more of their products that I want than I actually do, I usually just stick to unique/LE items. I also used to buy a bit of clinique, after hearing rave reviews, but I was never really a fan. Their 3 step system made my skin SO BAD, and their foundations always came up super orange on me.
Honestly, I have never really been into makeup. But ever since i bumped into Temptalia several months ago, i started ditching The Body Shop which was/is budget friendly for me. But now i’m intrigued with the reviews on the higher end brands which unfortunately are not available where i live. i have to wait for someone to travel abroad to pick up some of the stuff i’m interested in.
Collistar and Pupa (Italian brands), Beyu and Art Deco (German/European Brands).
MAC – was great when it came out, but now there’s so many better brands out there; Laura Mercier – just a little too boring for me, and some inconsistency in eyeshadow smoothness/pigmentation and terrible reation to skin care products.
I used to use MAC faithfully (hey…if it could do wonders for Rue Paul…then hell, I’ll try it)! LOVED it!….and like their recycle where you turn in 5 or 6 empty containers..and you’d get a new lipstick! But then I got the sigh…QVC bug…and I went totally Smashbox..I really thought Holly Mordini sold the product well..I got a lot of compliments..I LOVED the auto delivery…until maybe 2 years ago…all the colors seemed the same nothing “popped” like it used to..I love the fact that they were first with that grinder container (bare minerals grrrrrrrr….) but when everything of theirs went “neutral”…I went back to MAC!!! Yeah..they DO have way too many LAUNCHES…but thank God for you Christine….wading through all that would drive me nuts….I still like Smashbox jetset eyeliner…but when you hit 50 lipglosses from Smashbox AD….ummmmm…there’s a problem….no…gave a TON OF NOT USED MAKEUP AWAY TO COWORKERS…who were thrilled…
Maybe Anna Sui, Paul & Joe and The Skinfood (Korean Brand). They do have beautiful packaging, but the quality of their product are disappointing. I thought the cute packaging is just a gimmick from the actual product.
This might be a little bit out of topic, but I used to like MAC blushes, but now I no longer use it. It just seems impossible to make the blushes to stay on my cheek, I have to reapply like every 2-3 hours, no fun!
Maybelline. My kit used to carry all their products: from foundation to lipgloss. But when I discovered the magic of MAC and UD, I eventually broke up with Maybelline — also because they test on animals. 🙁
I used to just use drugstore brands, often L’Oreal, but I ditched them when I found out about their animal testing policies. I’ll occasionally buy from companies they own, since I know they run their divisions pretty separately, but I still try to avoid the whole conglomerate.
Then I got into Mac, but in the last year or so, I find their quality has dipped.
Now, there are a lot of companies I buy from, but I haven’t developed a new favourite.
I used to really like L’Oreal, until I learned about their animal testing status. Knowing they test in animals is so unsettling, considering how many people support that brand. However, I’m not entirely sure if they still are testers, so please let me know if they aren’t anymore!
Clinique and Cover Girl. I don’t know why I quit buying there….probably bc I got bored and branched out.
I used to think Benefit was the bees knees.. now i think its crap. 😀
Interesting how many people have ditched Clinique, Nars and Smashbox. I agree with them that the quality of all 3 brands has gone downhill. I’m also pretty much done with MAC, unless it’s something truly new (not a repromote) that’s also a great performer. MAC has really oversaturated the marketplace with the huge number of new collections; I know I have a bad case of “buyer fatigue” and unless something in the ad campaign really grabs me, I just tune them out now. While I am willing to drop big bucks on something that’s a real standout (Cle de Peau lippies, I’m lookin’ at you!), I’ve been enjoying the discovery of good brands that are less high-end. Two recent standouts have been the Sephora brand cream lipsticks (honestly on a level with Hourglass & Guerlain), their jumbo eye crayons (total dupes of UD for half the price with more wearable colors) and their shimmery eyeliner pencils. Sephora’s brand used to be really crappy; I’m happy to say they’ve stepped up to the plate in a big way over the last year.
Loreal! Used to buy everything from them… Now I only have one eye shadow…
L’oreal…
I hardly ever use it
I used to like Chanel, but found that every time I there was a foundation that worked well, it got discontinued! Also the nail polish dried out my nails terribly. And I got tired of endless brown eyeshadows!
I no longer use Aveda. They have changed or discontinued their good items. I also no longer use Clinique. I used them when I first got into makeup but I think that we all eventually grow out of them. I don’t use MAC as much as I use to. I love their Pro only products. They have had quite a few not so good collections and I am still not happy about their increase in prices and their decrease in product. I no longer use Revlon as well. I used a lipgloss and I guess that the formula changes because it broke my lips out so bad that everyone thought that I had used a lip plumper. It look a week for my lips to go back to normal and I haven’t touched them since.
I used to love REVLON… I don’t know what happened, but I just simply stopped using it!!! Too 90’s for me, you know? LOL
I stopped using Clinique, especially for eyeshadows, since they seem so underpigmented.
I used to love Shu Uemura (Make-up, Tools and Skincare) when it was available in Nordstrom branches. Don’t get me wrong, I still love it til now, although I find it inconvenient that I have to order $50 worth of products in their website to get Free Shipping and I can never swatch the colors in person before ordering.
I no longer use Clinique and smashbox
When I was in middle school, I was an avid fan of Cornsilk. No longer use it, heck I don’t even think they make it anymore. For skincare, I used to always use Clean and Clear items but they kept discontinuing things I liked, I’m glad I am now able to afford higher end brands because the good drugstore stuff always gets discontinued.
as a teenager I used lots of bourjois, later I switched to Estee Lauder, Chanel, YSL, Dior, Givenchy, Guerlain, Clinique, Lancome some Serge Lutens, now when im not in Europe anymore i discover american brands, and may by my switch is opposite from most of people on this website, as I started to wear more MAC, Bobbi Brown, Urban Decay, Tarte and so on:)
make up is so much fun, and finding new things are always interesting, Im also so happy Ive found this website, thank you Christine, it is very informative and useful:)))
