We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Just one???? It would probably be Marc Jacobs also for me! I loved their single eyeshadows and also their skinny liners (not so much the regular ones – they all dried out on me way too quickly). A close contender would be Becca – so many of the products (especially cheek ones and their glowy primer) are staples for me and I miss them (but know I won’t use them up any time soon – the beauty of most cheek products!)

1. Everyone : becca
2. Everyone: mjb
3. Me: zoeva m/u. Pared to ridiculous. Still lots of brushes
4. Fresh m/u. Great l/s, blush, some shadows. Unusual shades for the time, esp lips. Skincare is virtually useless to me 2nd chemical sunscreen. Also, not KB, lol

Completely agree! I loved MJB and had all the eyeshadow palettes, blushes, many of the eyeliners, etc. I’ve decluttered everything I had due to the products getting too old and alas, there is no replacement. MJB is probably the only brand I can honestly say I miss. I wonder why Marc Jacobs shut it down?

His contract with Kendo was up. He’s supposed to reformulate the products and bring the brand back under new partnership or as an indie brand, but there haven’t been any updates on that process over the last 2 years.

I couldn’t agree more! I bought a bunch of back-ups of my favorite colorful pencil liners from Marc Jacobs for my waterline. i’m going to be so disappointed when I run out of them all 😭

The original Bite, before they went all crazy.
That, and L’Oreal had a lipstick line called Shine Delice in the late 90s/early 00s that was THE best.

Me too MJB!! My favorite single eyeshadow of all time is by them. Its O-Mega Perfect O…..the best nude base for eyeshadow I’ve ever found….I keep trying to find it on E-Bay and other site….All their single O’Mega shadows were so good, very creamy blendable powders…I also have some Burberry single shadows that I love….would’nt mind some backups for them also…..

Prescriptives Makeup – loved how you could customize their foundations! They were way ahead of their time, and I’m not sure if it was financially feasible to maintain, or if it was poorly managed. But I loved it and miss it.

1.) Bite Beauty! Some of THEE Best, most comfortable lipsticks to have ever existed!
3.) Urban Decay from before them going vegan and becoming mostly utter rubbish! I say this because other vegan brands get it right, have every conceivable color, and are generally accessible to most if not all.
3.) Also, yes, I totally agree with you on Marc Jacobs Beauty, too!

I’m sure that there’s others, but these are the first ones to come up in my brain.

Honestly, these discussion questions are so interesting and enjoyable. I’m sure I’m not the only one who really enjoys having a “prompt” to cause me to think about some of the older but still much loved items in my hoard (calling it a “collection” sounds nicer but, really, it is a hoard!)

Marc Jacobs I think it was called remedy concealer, had a cooling tip. Still have a bit but use it sparingly.
Also, their balmy lipsticks.
Honorable mention to Becca which I first discovered in the early 2000’s at Bergdorf Goodman. Loved their cream blush and their loose powder.

Makeup geek! I think shops like Sydney Grace ended up out performing MUG singles, but at the time, MUG was the best eyeshadow I had ever tried

Bonne Bell, specifically Lip Lix from the 90s. I never got to experience them, just read about them in magazines when I came to America on holidays, and I would love to get to experience them.

Ditto Marc Jacobs! I’d add Becca in its heyday, and Bite Beauty before they eliminated lanolin, revamped their perfect lipstick into a holy mess, and destroyed their products.

I miss Marc Jacobs also. While The Balm is technically around, I guess, it’s impossible to find any products that seem from a fresh website. I miss the real Barescentuls when Leslie Blodgett owned it, the foundation was fantastic and her shadows were incredible. She really invented foiling.

Lipstick Queen. The new California “clean” brand HIGHR is doing a good job duping its beloved sheers, though. Their Blue Jeans is a good dupe of the cult Jean Queen, for example.

Dani Avatar

Lipstick Queen is the first brand I thought of, too! They made so many of my favorite lipsticks, and I loved picking one up from the fun little collections they’d do that each had different packaging! RIP Saint Mauve and Bete Noire Sheer

Prescrptives had a great scientific approach and I am sure it would work again.
OCC had a great vision , and both had great products.

1) Marc Jacobs: Loved the palettes, lipsticks, blushes and brushes. Really miss this line

2) Burberry Beauty: The eyeshadow singles were superb – I adore the shade Barley. Also, big fan of their lipsticks.

3) Prescriptives: Great mascara and foundation. I know MAC has their False Lashes mascara, but I don’t feel it’s the same.

Marc Jacobs and Bite for me as well. The Skinny liners wore so well, even in the waterline, and super easy to use! Bite had a great long-wearing lipstick, and the original Agave lip mask was wonderful – still have some left!

Elizabeth and James. I loved their fragrances. Cosmetics: OCC, Tarina Tarantino, Sleek (at least, I don’t see them in the US any more or hear influencers talk about them), Midas Cosmetics (rebranded as Mydas Cosmetics after shutting down, but it’s not what it once was), Becca, Coastal Scents, Geek Chic Cosmetics, the original Bite Beauty. And I’ll always be down for Revlon to bring back the Street Wear line. You’d think with ’90s grunge and goth nostalgia going hard right now, this would be the perfect time.

Hmm, maybe Prescriptives? I never actually tried it myself, so maybe it wasn’t executed well…but the idea of relatively accessible custom foundation (we all know someone who wears the wrong shade! almost as ubiquitous an issue as improperly fitting bras!!) is a good one. I know some other online-only, direct-to-consumer options have popped up since, but it would probably be best if it could be done in person at counters as well—and right now I only know of Le Teint Particulier by Lancôme doing something similar, which is only available at a handful of Nordstrom locations and looks more expensive (based on no price being listed at all, lol).
